  • A mobile security company has carried out a research investigation to address the popular conspiracy theory that tech giants are listening to conversations.
The internet is awash with posts and videos on social media where people claim to have proof that the likes of Facebook and Google are spying on users in order to serve hyper-targeted adverts.
Videos have gone viral in recent months showing people talking about products and then ads for those exact items appear online.
Now, cyber security-specialists at Wandera have emulated the online experiments and found no evidence that phones or apps were secretly listening.
    Joe Tidy reports.

yeap, i couldn't figure out why RUclips keeps serving baby formula ads. No infant or toddler or pregnancy in my household.
Then it occurred to me, I've been calling my cat "crybaby" because he's been doing mating calls at night and when he sees me he wont stop meowing until i cradle and rock him like a baby in my arms.
im assuming my phone also caught the physical motion of me rocking while saying sweet things to my cat.
      "come here cry baby."
      "who's my good boy?"
      "hey handsome boy whatcha doing?"
      "you ok my baby boy."
as i cradle and rock him in my arms andy phone in my pocket.

It is a fact that every telephone conversation in the world is listened to and has been since before mobile phones existed. Software then sifts through the conversations looking for key words and eventually some of the calls are listened to by people and many more are saved. I even remember that fact being on the tv once in the '90s.

I believe my phone was "listening" to the conversation. Seriously.

  • @XSpImmaLion
    @XSpImmaLion 5 лет назад +2

They are not "listening", as in native OSs like Android or iOS are not surreptiously turning on the microphones of your phones to record audio... because there are tons of independent security and privacy experts checking if this isn't being done all the time, and further, it's a very ineffective way of collecting data on people. It's not only a risk for the image of the company, though they always seen to escape unfazed when something does happen, it's just too costly and too ineffective when people are voluntarily giving away relevant and already filtered information all the time.
Audio recordings generates big files that would come at high costs for mass storage. For now at least, the math doesn't add up. Analysing random recording from people also doesn't pay off. It's too expensive and automated ways of doing it is not quite there just yet... but this is changing, and one day may become extremely profitable. Just be aware of that.
They are definitely listening in several other manners though, in ways you don't even realize. Every type of online purchase, credit cards registering every purchase you do and selling the data, ISPs tracking every website you visit and selling that info also, Google recording every search you do, going through every photo you backup, social networks monitoring every post you make, apps including ones made by those very companies leveraging any usage you do on them to collect and interpret information on you, this comment that I'm making, this is all being stored and either interpreted and recorded right now, or just set aside for later analysis.... that's entirely leaving out malware and spyware, we're talking only about legal stuff here.
If we open the illegal and exploitive can of worms, then all bets are off. Everything with a microphone could be listening on you. Specially Internet connected devices, but not limited to.
With all those different sources of information combined, plus research on averages and on characteristics of your demographic, you can make extremely accurate pictures about people. No one is as unpredictable as they think they are, and if you really is, who cares? Advertising networks only cares about the average, about selling more, about putting the right ads in front of the majority of people.
Oh, btw, if you are using a smart assistant, yes, they are listening in. Because then, there's a real logical economic motivation for it. It's to improve their voice recognition tech that gives them a leg up against the competition. And you are voluntarily letting your device microphone be open at all times, so there is nothing that can be done by security and privacy experts. You are letting it listen in to you because you want to. There is no way for a device to respond to your command prompt - Alexa, Hey Google, Siri, or whatever - without them listening in all the time. And none of the current major smart assistants work without being connected to some central server by the company that provides the service, so it's just out there, and you have to consider it out of your control - much like any other sort of thing you type or send through the Internet.

Google is definately listening, I've had way too many coincidences especially with RUclips recomendations. A couple of days ago for example I was talking to my GF about an old 80s cartoon I sometimes watched as a kid called Ulysess. Neither of us went online searching for it at the time, she had actually never heard of it and until then I hadn't even thought about it for years let alone searched for it myself. But the very next morning I open RUclips and there amoungst all the usual reccomended videos related to things I watch is a video on Ulysess. A pretty big coincidence and it happens far too often considering the odds.

Don't trust that these studies are thorough enough or deep enough. Many developers are naive about this possibility. Google aps like RUclips together with an Android OS may indeed make eavesdropping-driven ad selection possible. It is not a mere "conspiracy theory."

I have so many times complaint that nobody pays attention to what I say... Does someone is really interested in listening to me now? :) :) :)

Absolute bullshit test. I know my phone listens to my conversations and pushes both advertisements and videos based on collected data.

The mear possiblity is enough to scare me. If there was an alternative to google, apple, facebook etc. I'd choose it. I dont want their shit.

ABSOLUTELY FALSE! You would be totally dumb to believe that a real voice data would be sent over to their servers. Anyone would notice this in no time on their data plan or whatever they are on. We have come so far with AI and speech recognision, cmon, phone itself just simply listens (or some hidden apps or whatever), and does speech recognision, highlighting the main key words. Then they are sent as a text of some kind, consuming almost zero data thus being not noticable. This is the ''all the other things'' apps use the data in background for. And they were called experts...

They clearly do. I can say anything and It’ll be on instagram within the hour even if it’s not been mention before

Check this out. I quit shaving for a week on vacation and I started getting all these shave club razor ads. also ads for beard combs. I shaved and the ads went away. A bit creepy really

But of course. I personally not trying to hide tho. Use it. I HOPE Google is listening to me sometimes, I have some good ideas. I am not out to hurt Google and they need to know it.

Isn't this a bit misleading? Sure we know our phones are most likely not listening to us in the background of our conversations, but the clip of Facebook hearing the question is if they use any of that audio obtained from phones. What do they do with the audio that is uploaded to Facebook via voice clips or videos? All the digital assistant companies are in hot water lately with contractors listening to voice data, but no one is asking for the full transparency of how companies use that data.

02:25 We can now predict what you’re interested in based on your past searches and past behaviors……that scares me😂
I feel like my phone listens to me but I guess I give enough information about myself in what I search🙈

@ferkemall not sure what you mean. What I mean is that the phones are actually listening, for me it's not consipiracy theory. It happened to me a million times with facebook and youtube. As far as I know this study could have been paid by big tech companies.

One day me and my friend were talking about Mountain Dew and how it’s very unhealthy with the yellow 5 or whatever and literally the next day I started getting ads while watching RUclips videos about Mountain Dew for like a week straight and it even was on my instagram.
