Migrant workers 'exploited' in Japan - BBC News

  • A Japanese immigration scheme has come under fire for widespread reports of the exploitation of workers. The BBC spoke to migrant workers who claim they were overworked and underpaid and found some were making clothes for big, international brands.
And as the BBC's Population Reporter Stephanie Hegarty found, workers in other industries have reported abuses such as unsafe working environments and bullying.

If you don’t work for a big company like those listed in Tokyo Stock Exchage, the chances are that your life over here in Japan would be hard as shown here. If you cannot speak Japanese well, it would get even worse. In all honesty, it is not easy even for a native Japanese myself. Better come here as a traveler, not a worker.

So I went to animation School cuz my dream was to work for gibli studios, I told this to my animation teacher and he said" that dream dies today, first of all miyazaki has his own people, 2nd your not Japanese they won't hire you even if you speak the language" me: "but that's racist, you mean me literally mastering their exact style won't get me in? All because I'm American?" Teacher: "you, it's their country and they can treat you how ever they want, I know you have their style, but I'm telling you for your own good, pick something else, they have their people and preferences, and because your not Japanese, you ain't it, sorry it's better to except reality now, you can try, but don't say I didn't warn you"...me:" wow, that's so dream crushing and disappointing to hear, I always wanted to live in Japan cuz of their culture and mannerisms, I didn't knew they we're pregidous to foreigners"....let's just say my many years of mastering miyazakis style has been unused :(

I'm Japanese, so what I'm writing here may be a little too nice to those of you who've experienced this in Japan. And while I know none of you directly and can't do anything to help you, I hope that you get employed at a more fair and kind workplace.
The thing is, even Japanese people have to bear a lot of stress at their workplaces. There's still a big difference in the treatment of men and women, and Japan is struggling with high rates of suicide due to bullying. Along with that, Japan is really strict on how the bosses and people in power have to be respected, which is probably something that many other people can't understand. And when foreigners who don't understand that culture come in and start calling their boss names, it's more than enough to light a match on the Japanese ''I don't like him because he's different from us.'' way of thinking. And additionally, if you don't look like an Asian and don't have that earnestness toward work that Japanese people are so renouned for, it just gets worse and worse. The fact that the language is really difficult doesn't help either.
At this rate, Japan is going to self-destruct at some point. The economy has been continuously going downward probably for over three decades.(Not really sure about the exact number.) Another great earthquake is going to strike within the next twenty years. We need migrants and the world to help us, but the people running businesses like those taken up in this video are throwing them aside, and in turn, destroying Japan's future.
To all the people who've read to this point, I just want to say not all Japanese are like this. There are nice people, funny people, people who you can't guess what they're thinking, just like any other country. And like other countries, there are people who don't give a second thought about hurting other people for money. These people are recently being taken up a lot, but there are plenty of normal, nice, lady-next-door type of people. I'd like you to keep that in mind when you think about Japan, and that not all the people in Japan are so cold.
Thank you for reading this extremely long comment.

      どいゆりか - san
Thank you for sharing your insight. I also agree with what you said. Japanese or even those other nationalities can never be generalized as good or bad/kind or unkind.
My sister and I (non-Japanese) met a kind ojiisan in 7/11 in Japan. Though, was a complete stranger, we were able to have some small talk then before leaving asked if we would like to have some drinks though we courteously declined to not cause any trouble for him. So instead, he bought us a chocolate snack then finally left. On the other hand, I can’t say this goes to other ojiisans-especially those who are in workplaces.
I think this migrant issue not only boils down to cultural differences/work regulations but as well, simply, in human ethics of treating people fairly as one should want himself to be treated.
*One of the possible solutions that I think would fit for this issue is, employers should be obliged to disclosed all the working conditions/rights to migrant workers before leaving their home countries. This would set migrant workers’ expectations and prevent potential blame/resentment and dire situations.

This also happens in philippines, though we have no suicide problem and aging population problem, but because our population is so young, some companies here set an age requirement upom hiring (age limit sometimes is only up to 24 years old) so those who are in their 40s have lesser opportunity to find a new job. I was amazed to see older people in japan working in customer service, you wouldn't see that much in philippines, except if he or she owns the business. Also, i've heard of companies here, mostly owned by korean or chinese, that pays their emoloyees less than minimum wage and make them work 6 days a week, if you will ask why they are not complaining, they fear the loss of income even if what they earn is less than what they are supposed to receive.

winning or losing doesn't determine whether or not one does something. not only that but as a colonizer, japan did kill a lot of people, and just like the aforementioned colonizers, minimized the occurrence. i say this bc japan used thousands of tamils for labor in WWII and got many of them killed. nobody hears that nowadays, now do they?

The other day, BBC report finally moved the issue of the sexual assault of boys by the president of an entertainment agency. Japan is a dying economy mainly because its very expensive to make anything there so manufacturers prefer to go to other countries with cheaper labor and better taxes. Its youth, the literal future of their country is also dwindling and are being forced to shoulder the expenses of their retirees while their own retirement prospects is looking grim. They are less inclined to start their own company and prefers instead to work for others, preferably big ones. But the problem is there are less and less companies that are innovating to compete in the world market so what they have is companies that are mainly competing locally. So with vigor-less youth and burdened with a large retired population as it is now there is no saving Japan from itself from its economic depression. Yet they persist on their policy of racial homogeneity and strict migration. And then of course this exploitation of workers, its a very clear symptom of desperation of small-time manufactures there. In my opinion there is no hope left for Japan, its just that they'll go out with a whimper rather than a bang.

Here in philippines, some of the hires know they will work in japan in disguise of "intern", but they bite anyway because the pay is much higher (though in japanese standard of living it is not enough) than in local workplace, in some ways we have this struggle coming from how domestic workers are treated in middle east, they are usually treated with cruelty, their passport are confiscated, the work time is horrendous, almost close to slavery. The japanese and korean exploitation are less prevalent than what we keep hearing from middle east.

This makes me really sad. I’m a Filipino too. We have too much population in the Philippines and because of that, people are struggling to find jobs with good pay not just in other countries, but here in the Philippines too. However it is hard to hire a lot of people because there are just too many people and some of them don’t even do their work properly. I’m speaking from my own observation since my dad owns a small company in a big city here in PH. Yet my dad is being patient and considerate so his employees usually work for 10 years or so with a good relationship with my dad. We give them good and consistent pay and we treat them as family too. Employees who had to resign in his small company usually becomes sad because they would miss the good times they had here. We are really close with each other to the point they’re just like a family.
Unfortunately, this is not the case for other Filipinos in this country, more on the overseas. I just hope that other countries who badly need migrants (like Japan), to accept migrants and treat them as human beings because Japan would destruct itself in the future and third-world countries with too much population (like the Philippines) would be more and more overpopulated and people who are living in the poverty line would suffer due to overpopulation. Population in the Philippines need to be stretched out to overseas. We have too many people here. Japan has low birth rates and if the people there would not reproduce, then they would need people from overseas to keep their good economy afloat otherwise they would flop.

Sometimes I have a feeling that bullying is the Japanese way of saying "welcome to the club". Power games are part and parcel of their social behaviour. If they don't bully you, if they are polite, it only means that you are a stranger, a guest who only stays temporarily, literally a few days. A toxic workplace (black company) is just another random workplace, nothing special at all.
I'm proud of my late Japanese father-in-law, who was a labour union activist for thirty-odd years. I miss you, father, and so does your home country.

Instead of awarding grants to poor nations, Japan gives 2 year work visas to these poor nations' migrant workers with the condition that they would enroll in Japanese language schools for the entire duration of their visa. This is so unbelievable. They call this aid. The tuition fee is equivalent to 3 and a half months of wages. The income these workers would receive from their employment would just be paid to their respective schools. These poor laborers are forced to do triple jobs just to be able to pay their rent and other living expenses. It's a miracle if they would ever have extra money to send to their family back home.
