Like that Indian boy, I too did my schooling and spent my childhood in Qatar because of my father's work. It was a safe and convenient lifestyle but that was just about it. Expat Children who grow in the Middle East become coddled and unsure about the realities of life. It was when I went to college in India and later in Europe when I developed full into an adult and was more aware of life's issues. I felt kind of free and never really missed Qatar at all. In fact now that I think of it the memories in Qatar were just with my friends many of whom have either went back to India or left for greener pastures. In the 15 years I have lived there I have never had any contact with a local Qatari boy or girl and I don't know anyone who did. All expats lived within their comfort zone and in a state of denial that they will continue to do so forever. I'm not sure from which state of India these people are from but the the country isn't that bad as media would portray in fact the South of India is really good to retire and my parents have been living well. Most white collared Indians now prefer working in India or else anywhere but the Middle East.
Yes indeed, most expats who grew up/born in the Gulf state, tend to grow up confused as they assume they are Qataris or Saudis, only to be told they need to go back to their original country which becomes a shock to them. They arrive to their Parents country and immediately receive a cultural shock plus they cannot speak in their own Mother Tongue. They mainly speak Arabic. So they end up having to learn their own language. They also get labeled Arabs from their own people. That's the situation for Pakistanis youths who grew up in Saudi Arabia and is a true situation to this day.

In the Middle east there workers are assigned in tiers based on their nationality and race. Top tier (owner, CEO, president) is for locals, 2nd highest (top managers, consultants, vp, etc) is for Caucasians or the so-called "Western educated" (which just means White), 3rd highest (mid managers) is for arabs from other countries like lebanon, Syria, etc, Then we approach the low tiers. Low level managers and supervisors go to other Arabs, Indians, and sometimes filipinos. The lowest levels are subdivided according to profession and nationality. Hospitality is dominated by Filipinos, sales and commerce by Indians, and the lowest of them all, construction workers and those who clean toilets, etc are Africans, Bangladeshi, etc

Thank you for this video. It's shocking to learn about these inhumane labor practices happening in a progressive and developed middle eastern country like Qatar. This is like modern slavery wherein millions of foreign migrants--those in construction companies. Their passports being confiscated. If you complain or go on strike, you might be deported. So these migrant workers coming from Africa and Asia were truly exploited and are treated like slaves, working and living in poor conditions. They are not paid well and not even given paid leaves. Imagine, some Filipino women working in beauty or spa salons for 3 years were not given a full day off whereas it was stated in their job contracts that they're entitled to day-offs monthly. It's so funny that out of thousand cases filed in the labor courts by ill-treated migrant workers, only 69 cases have been processed. There's obviously unfair labor practices in Qatar. It's sad and such a shame that it continues to happen that millions of foreign migrant workers, behind those facades of the modern infrastructures like the construction of big sports dome/arenas for the 2022 World Cup were built by the modern slaves of the 21st century.
All of the invited football teams will go, enjoy themselves, and look the other way from all of the suffering that went in to making it possible. Just like fans will still watch, even those who know about these abuses. It's sad.

In fact now that I think of it the memories in Qatar were just with my friends many of whom have either went back to India or left for greener pastures. In the 15 years I have lived there I have never had any contact with a local Qatari boy or girl and I don't know anyone who did. I'm not sure from which state of India these people are from but the the country isn't that bad as media would portray in fact the South of India is really good to retire and my parents have been living well.

And the french football team will protest by going to the World Cup and enjoying all their hospitality

Yep and The West turn a blind eye.
I wonder why? could it be the OIL revenues and the vested interest of Gulf Oil, hmmmm
It happens in western countries too. Asian workers were paid less then they’re white counterparts!!! So look at your own country before pointing fingers!!!
Watching this video breaks my heart to see one of the richest country in the World making people suffer like this.
Really there is no justice in the World, this world cup should be even cancel.
My heart is broken by the plight of my kenyan brother...May GOD guide him
This is what i was going through in the past two years, my friend i felt it.
FIFA should penalise Qatar at least 5Bn for human rights violations. It should collect details of all those who died and who worked and compensate them.
FIFA is the biggest criminal syndicate in football
Yeah I agree FIFA is more corrupt
If crimes of colonial slavery by Britain and America are still not paid 200 years later this discussion has not started
. Africa needs 300 trillion compensation for slavery
@@cdechirume2979 I agree 👏👏👏
@@therock8288 And more to the point Who is going to be the Face representing Fifa

It’s been so clear that those built the stadiums were/ are being treated as slaves. FIFA’s closed it’s ear and eye to realise that. Unfortunately they are backed up by all the members of FIFA. It’s a wonder that players do the same. If they say it’s impossible not to participate then I can be possible to demand compensation for the families of those who died on these graveyards and those still working there from the day they arrived until they leave.
For Qatar it would mean a great humanitarian uplifting. From scum country to a admired one would cost them almost nothing related to the wealth they have.
The conditions are FAR WORSE in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, Nepal, and the Philippines, as well as all of Africa!
@@toolate6971
Are you justifying what happened to those poor people who were seeking better life for their families but got cheated and killed? I don’t understand what your point is?
This not fair ..
Historic slavery.
Those who exploit and enslave now
were cheated countries years ago
before oil was discovered.
Fk off!! Just because India and Iran are bad doesn't mean it's okay for workers from these countries to be abused!!
Really heart touching. I am leaving the country today, leaving my two months unpaid salary . Voice is not heard in court also.
That sounds unconvincing.
Bet then again you can't always be satisfied. In India most times court does not hear people who are poor or weak.
Unbelievable how some of us can choose to live our life in excess while people a few feet away struggle to make ends meet.
Demons among humans
Wow. Is qatar the only country like this? Suggest you look in your own backyard too. Hypocrites
Feel really sad for this guy....being slaved yet never lost hope,,,,,God bless him with new opportunities 🙏🙏
We Vietnamese are also there, thanks for the news
Don't talk about Qatar , we are know what Vietnamese doing in Qatar , Vietnamese eat human beings in Qatar !!!
Basically a prison camp for the voiceless in the desert, seems that their is lots of racism, no blonds working there@
I have lived in worst situation in Dubai. Made some money and left the country and now running my own business. I'm happy that the country provided me and family when the financial situations were hard, as every migrant works in the GCC. We never have any options like the EU or US but to work as this to provide our family.
If one takes the time to really think about it, this is how the pyrmaids, ziggurats and temples etc were built. 1000 years from now, people may look back in awe at this accomplishments but the stories of the 'workers' will go untold
You have converted to the religion of those who made you slave and traded you and you converted to that slavery making religion. What a great thinking.
Thank you France 24 for this documentary. My heart goes out for Kenyan works .

Doesn't donation and the humanitarian work that Switzerland does across the world have positive impact on some people's lives? If the only job you can offer is slavery like, then just don't do it. Switzerland isn't in need of building massive infrastructure plans, their's already is one of the best in the world...and hence it isn't in need of migrant workers. So why should it employ such workers in the first place? To prove a point?
As a Kenyan working in Qatar, I'm happy I'm making a living away from home. These reforms won't happen overnight and in as much as we criticise this awful exploitation by rogue companies, let's also commend the Qatar government for it's commitment in eradicating this vice. I came here in 2019 and definitely it's evident there is upward change regarding salary and welfare of various company workers by the employers. It's my hope that soon these allegations won't have any room to thrive in......not only in Qatar but everywhere in the world.
Are you a construction worker? Are you in the same situation as the people shown here?
@@devilslayerror 7 days, still no response..
@@devilslayerror yup I used to be. Don't believe everything you see on news. The same workers won't share their other side of the story. I've seen companies being closed for neglecting workers rights. So for sure there has been change. Sorry for responding late.

I heard a l ot of sad stories from my fellow Filipinos who worked there. Poor living and working conditions, unpaid salaries and low pay were the usual stories for low-level skill workers. In fairness, some Filipino engineers, tech-related professionals, etc do not complain much.
I am an Indian staying in Oman. Oman is very different than other gcc countries. There is no such exploitation.
Surely Oman is a better country with nice nationals. Thanks to Sultan Qaboos influence
Hindus going to Muslim Arab countries to earn money which they can’t go and then complaining. If they don’t get their money they should complain straightaway to their Indian agents who sent them there instead of then crying later.

Sad situation, but fantastic reporting! I've seen more and more great reporting coming out of France 24! Great job, you have a new sub and viewer!
I am Kenyan working in Qatar,bro..where i am alhamdullilah i thank God its not that tough but i have friends who go through hell. Passports are taken upon arrival, salary deductions that don’t even make clear sense.. you find someone just pushing on because the situation back at home is Hard. But 80% of workers here are not happy man, fake promises from the sponsors.its crazy and when you go report your sponsor 🤦🏽♂️they change the whole thing against you. They prove it to you that they have the power and this is their country.. you can resign and they won’t give you your passport neither plane ticket.. I’ve seen it from a friend who had no choice but go back to work.. the only way to work here is you need to be VERY STRONG..
Migrant workers were deceived and died for Qatar's World Cup.
Thousands want compensation!
I worked in Qatar and that’s true. They treat employees like expendable things for no laws are enforced by the government and everything can be negotiated through personal connections
Thank you for sharing stories as such. Wish people could watch them on their way going to gulf nations before their arrival.
Thank you for fighting for human rights .
Very good report, really opening our eyes !
If you don’t like it don’t come simple solution … ever wondered why you see many workers coming every year even with bad publicity ? How many millions work in Gulf region and how many complains we see? you complain and protest in France too …these workers have better wages than their country and they don’t wanna buy anything for their apartments because they know it’s just temporary and they send the money back
My heart really bleeds for these migrant workers who have been subjected to modern-day slavery. I plan to come to Qatar to work but watching this has given me second thoughts about the Middle East as a whole. I wish them success in their pursuit for happiness.
This is Heartbreaking💔😢
Though, struggle is everywhere, not just in Qatar.
More so in the Arab world, in the west there's employment laws etc
Please don’t make excuses, this is horrific and is he the norm in Middle Eastern countries. It’s horrendous, outdated and Medieval.
1970's/80's, I personally know Libya's worker's would go to the bank for their salary, the worker would receive their pay, 1/2 their pay and many times get no pay at all. It was the banks call. It's 2020's and countries still do this. Terrible. 🤮
That's hypocritical and morally cowardly

Low income migrant workers are literally modern day slaves .
Especially in construction.
This is the people who physically build all skyscrapers in luxury cities in GCC.
Their condition in camp is very poor.
They get extremely low payment and they work in extreme heat.
I know it personally since I was working as an engineer in a construction company in Dubai and I felt so bad and I quit in my 3rd year.
My heart goes out to all these migrant workers including my fellow countrymen who suffered the same experience. May they have a better life ahead of them
