      Sit & listen to a fascinating history lesson: The protagonist is based on a real historical figure, ship builder/navigator/astrologist William Adams. He, at age 36, became the first northern European to reach Japan in the 17th century and became one of the few elites to become a samurai who was a foreigner. He was very powerful becoming the shogun's, Tokugawa Ieyasu, personal favorite and held a very high position in the courts. leyasu loved Adams so much he prohibited him from returning to England to see his wife and two kids. Instead, Adams married a samurai's daughter and bore two kids, living in Japan until his death at the age of 55.

    I feel like "body awareness" is a concept that Dark Souls brought back into the minds of modern gamers but that it gets credit for inventing when it didn't.
    My personal belief is that PS1 and PS2 era developers couldn't figure out how to make action games, the bread and butter of the games industry up until that point, in 3D. The cameras were difficult to program and the processors weren't capable enough to make elaborate environments. So instead, they said, "we're having a problem making games that ask the gamer to know where their body is and to attack i the right direction, so we'll throw that out the window and have games where your character flails wildly in ALL directions and it doesn't MATTER where the character is or what they are doing. Just keep mashing that button and we'll take care of the rest and make sure cool stuff is in front of your face for a few hours."
    I feel like Dark Souls just went, "hey, remember when you had to know where your character was on the screen, what direction they were facing and you actually had to TRY to hit bad guys and navigate environments? That was cool, right? Let's do that again."

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 7 лет назад +7

      oh, no, I'm not necessarily responding to anything in the review. It was just a general comment about Dark Souls.

    • @mikkokoponen8464
      @mikkokoponen8464 7 лет назад

      JazGalaxy Just out of curiosity... what games did this back in the day?

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy 7 лет назад

      Nearly every video game that was made had body awareness as a major facet of it's game design. We could pick something like Donkey Kong, arbitrarily. Tracking trajectories of multiple enemy elements, knowing where Mario is on screen, knowing where Mario is GOING to be in 10 seconds, etc. were core concepts of the gameplay.
      In my opinion, we didn't really see that change until games went 3d and suddenly Contra, Mega-Man, Castlevania, etc., games that relied on knowing your characters location and being precise about your character's attack simply didn't work anymore. Developers could no longer count on players knowing where their character was, what direction they were facing, and knowing in which direction they would attack. It is, after all, frustrating to be hit from off-screen because the camera wasn't looking in the right direction and frustrating not to be able to hit an enemy because you can't properly target in 3d. None of these things were problems in 2d.
      So developers did two things: 1) They looked to MMOs which were games that were inherently developed around having no legitimate gameplay. (Players were playing on 14.4bps modems that frequently dropped packets or got disconnected. So they designed game systems around position and exact location not being important. This was really the beginning of "carrot-on-a-stick gameplay that kept you on an addiction treadmill for the reward of a "ding".) and 2) The invention of the God Of War style of combat where the player attacks in 360 degree "combos", eliminating the need for targeting, and the character snaps to targets eliminating the need for body awareness. If you just keep mashing the button until everything on screen is dead, the character will snap to targets and keep whaling on them no matter where the bad guy is. Moreover, recharging health, invisible walls on enges and other "bumper bowling"-eque safeguards meant that you never really had to know where your character was on screen. It was mostly irrelevant.
      Dark Souls brought back the concept that you had to know where your character was, what direction they were facing and where bad guys were. Suddenly all that stuff mattered again where, for years, games had been designed so that they didn't matter.

    • @Esmoxe
      @Esmoxe 7 лет назад +4

      I disagree... I think Devil May Cry 1, and to a lesser extent 3, has a lot of "body awareness", despite having the obvious camera problems - and in fast paced combat, which is way more impreesive than what Souls does, in my opinion (not shitting os Soulsborne of course)

    • @mikkokoponen8464
      @mikkokoponen8464 7 лет назад

      Interesting point. Still in most of the shooters you need to know your location and so on. I guess it is a bit different but still.

      I'm excited for Star Citizen, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Ni no Kuni 2, Persona 5, Yakuza 0 (Already have but it's this year still), Yakuza Kiwami, Mass Effect Andromeda (when complete version comes out since fuck ea for their bad practices with dlc where it's cheaper to buy full version over just the dlc after you already own the game), and plenty of other games. Stuff like A Hat in Time, Nex Machina, Matterfall, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 3, Nier Automata, Styx: Shards of Darkness, Digimon World: New Order, Horizon Zero Dawn, Kingdom Hearts 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8, Little Nightmares, Get Even (possibly), Tekken 7, The Bard's Tale IV, Absolver, Ace Combat 7, Agents of Mayhem (possibly), Call of Cthulhu, Dauntless, Death's Gambit, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Drawn to Death, Dreadnought, Dreams, Earth Defense Force 5, Frozen Synapse 2, Gran Turismo Sport, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev.2, Lords of the Fallen 2 (if not just to see if they can improve on the first game to make a solid game), Mages of Mystralia, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Megaton Rainfall. LIGHTFIELD, New Hot Shots Golf, Nine Parchments, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon, Nidhogg 2, Outlast 2, Overkill's The Walking Dead, Pillars of the Earth, SpellForce 3, Starblood Arena, Star Control: Origins, State of Mind, Strafe, Sundered, The Guild 3, The Sexy Brutale, The Church in the Darkness, The Escapists 2, Thimbleweed Park, Tokyo 42, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Vampyr, Windjammers, What Remains of Edith Finch, WipEout: Omega Collection, Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles, etc etc

      From what I could find they both have those modes, but the ps4 pro reaches 1080p and the normal one gets max 720p on action mode, either way it seems worth it to get the pro, here's hoping more games take advantage of that.

    I didn't look much into this game before, but I am growing interested after some people compared it to Onimusha. I don't like Dark Souls style and combat; too clunky and slow. From this video, this looks more like Onimusha than Dark Souls.

    • @MrInuhanyou123
      @MrInuhanyou123 7 лет назад +2

      this game has the potential to be harder than souls, but its more polished as an action game in the RPG space similar to Nier Automata, which makes sense coming from pure action game based devs like Team Ninja. Its has a lot of similarities mechanically to Ninja gaiden. So if you ever played those games and liked them, you'll definitely like this.
      Also i agree about the level based structure, that's why demons is still my favorite souls

    • @SuntoryKick
      @SuntoryKick 7 лет назад +3

      I disagree there. I've defeated the first 7 or 8 bosses in Nioh and difficulty wise it has been around the same as Bloodborne which I think was a relatively easy Souls game. I think that people are finding Nioh difficult because they are trying to play it like a Souls game.

    Great review, definitely sold me on the game, but I'd perhaps suggest revealing fewer bosses in the review. I think bosses in these types of games are really amazing, and the feeling of encountering them for the first time totally blind is one that should be protected whenever possible. I think in cases like that, revealing absolutely as little as possible is the way to go. Great job otherwise Ben, knocked it out of the park with this one.

    Great review, you really captured the strong points of the game.
    The story thing is really weird, the game expects you to know a little about Sengoku era japan. So when a guy like Kobayakawa Hideaki or Ii Naomasa shows up, they don't really need presentation. You might even get excited when a fellow like Kuroda Nagamasa or Honda Tadakatsu show up if you're into that stuff. I was super pumped to visit Shigisan castle and loved their depiction of Hisahide, because of all the musou I played. It's a huge flaw, though, to rely on people's knowledge of Japanese history when that the game is a worldwide release.

    In depth reviews like this are why I always went to GameTrailers first. I'm glad Easy Allies has not changed the way the do their reviews, even if they're not always out by day one (it's always smarter to wait before you buy anyway).

    The game is so much fun. I agree with Ben , the enemy are not that diverse . I use Co Op when I just want to get through the boss not the level. Kodama makes the level enjoyable , their cuteness make the game not as dark as it may seem.They story is okay.

      fran jaff the game have a big learning curves for any souls like games so far. You could do a simple attacks and safe approaches methods playthrough to complete the game but of course it certainly a risks on its own.

    All in all I think this is a good review. But I feel like he skipped too many of it flaws to talk about the good stuff. Like the game having an action mode(which is great!), but didn't mention the insane framedrops you'll get even in action mode. Especially at some of the bosses. And having levels instead of an interconnected world isn't bad, sure. But he failed to mention that if you do the side quests, the level progression is as follows: Level 1-> Level 2 -> Level 1 backwards -> Level 3 -> Level 1 backwards again(but with a kill target) -> etc… It got too repetitive for me. I'm quite torn on this game because it does so many things so well, but it also does some things pretty badly. But I guess if you're a positive guy and don't focus on the flaws the game is a solid 4.5/5

    You guys should make a guide of how to get into these Souls kinda games. I've tried to love Dark Souls many times but just can't seem to "get it". Like I can see a great game in front of me but I just can't understand it.

    • @Arsio12
      @Arsio12 7 лет назад +6

      It could just boil down to your personal taste of what kind of games you like. I think Dark Souls is a great game, but I don't like playing it. Too many elements (not the difficulty) of the game is just not my kind of thing. Bloodbourne though is more my type of game, I really enjoy that game despite not being able to get into Dark Souls.

      Took me four attempts before I finally made it all the way through. Here are some things that help:
      -The first level of a Souls game is always brutal. I've now played through all of them, and the first level is still the most excruciating part to get through. Make it past the Gargoyles in Dark Souls 1 and the game opens up a lot, and continues to do so from there.
      -Decide how you want to play from the start. While you can play a Souls game by experimenting with a multitude of things, you'll make it a lot easier on yourself if you choose a playstyle and spend the whole game improving it. Since you're going in fresh, looking up some stuff online and seeing what appeals to you (as well as where to find the equipment you want in the world) is probably your best bet.
      -Use a walkthrough. Some people call this cheating, but if you're going in for your first Souls experience I say use anything at your disposal. Walkthroughs can help you find secret areas or point out bonfires you missed, and you'll be singing their praises on certain boss fights (dogs). I've bashed my head against a boss for hours, watched a video of someone beating it, understood how they dodged that one move that always got me, and two runs later I'm celebrating a victory. I still had to do the winning myself. I just did some research beforehand.
      -Give yourself time to play. Souls is not a twenty minutes at a time kind of game. Especially your first time through, it's going to ask you to sit down and take your time. You can't rush through it.
      Lastly, Souls are rhythm-puzzle games disguised as action games. Approach every enemy encounter, every new room, every boss fight, like you would a puzzle. You're not beating it, you're figuring it out. Damage is important, but at their core Souls are games about patterns and timing. Learn your enemy's dance from a safe distance (ie bait their attacks and learn the pattern) then figure out where your own moves fit in to it. That's all it takes, and while the formula becomes complicated as you go along, this is literally the only trick to a Souls game. You can beat it with any weapon, armour, or magic as long as you can learn the proper timing for using it.
      Good luck \[T]/

      bigevilworldwide1 It's pretty obvious that Team Ninja took some inspiration from Souls for Nioh, just like I'm sure Demon's Souls was inspired in some ways by Ninja Gaiden.. no reason to be salty about it.

      Souls games are not hard but demanding - not just demanding on either exercising your reflex or your wit but your patience and prudence. Players are required to figure out the problems by themselves through trial and error or learn from others through searching and reading - the willingness to try or to learn.
      Souls games are designed in such a way that a player can choose to play easier or harder although there are no difficulty levels to choose from. The hard ways out are obvious but there are also easy ways out like using range weapons to hunt down enemies one at a time, applying hit and run tactics or summoning others to fight bosses etc.
      It is all about the effort of trying, finding and learning. Souls games are not effortless games giving out instant gratification - even for an easy way out, you still need to put in an effort to find it.

      bigevilworldwide1 fuck you and you fanboy morons. it's heavily I fluenced by souls games. are you just ignoring the fact the developers openly stated they took heavy influence from the souls games. I've played it. I've played the souls game. it's very much in the souls like genre. the trouble you have, is that you think that some how is a bad thing. but it's not. get your head out of the clouds. so dumb.

      HAHA this guy. The stamina represents the entire way the game plays and flows, not to mention the lvl layouts and secrets and just you could go on and on, theirs literally even bonfires and mimics. Sure you could say that lots of games have done some of these things in similar ways but all of them together like this? Very obvious Souls inspiration no matter how much you dislike the games. I'd be willing to bet that Team Ninja have gone on record and said it themselves but I'm too lazy to look.
      I don't know why the similarities bother you, unlike most games that take inspiration from Souls Nioh manages to do a lot to differentiate itself and stand on it's own 2 feet but denying the connection is silly. This is how games work the industry grows from learning from each other, if theirs anything to take inspiration from in the games industry it's souls. i wish more games would! I know it's kind of frustrating how everyone boils every game down into some other game or games mixed together and Ninja Gaiden did a lot of things Souls does before they did but the inspiration is pretty obvious in this instance. I also think even though it can be annoying it's also kind of healthy to compare games, it means that if you really want to stand out and make a name for yourself in this industry you either have to get creative and take some risks/try to innovate or really perfect/build upon an already solid foundation.

      "I'd be willing to bet that Team Ninja have gone on record and said it themselves but I'm too lazy to look."
      Yes, yes they have, multiple times. They said Soulsborne was this game primary influence. The vast majority of the Team Ninja team is a fan of those games.
      They also mentioned Diablo, Onimusha and Akira Kurosawa films (this game was originally based on an unfinished script by him) as influences. They said they wanted to combine their experience with Ninja Gaiden with all of those things.
      In the end though, even though you'd have to be delusional to not see the souls comparisons, Nioh still has a flavor of its own, with a very different feel from Souls - That's why I don't think every single souls fan will like it, it's much faster and action focused with much less atmosphere and focus on its lore with a completely bonkers plotline.
