The commentator says it all at the beginning... *Spring has arrived...* That's the feeling I get, with the birds singing - mixed with her beautiful choreography and difficult acrobatics.

Elena Shoushounova and Daniela Silivas were the two gymnasts who battled each other on their road to the 1988 Olympics and fascinated the spectators back then. Still this routine is one of the best floor routines in my opinion. Oksana will always be one of my favorite gymnasts. 😄

She was like the Olga korbut of the 1980s with her smile deposition and timing with the bird music and the tumbling in this just amazing how precise she is. Too bad she never made it on the 1988 Olympic team not sure what the reason was, the Russians prefered Shusanova the bring home the medals more. Who knows.
She wasn't really in top form, even already at the '87 Worlds, her beam work had grown consistently tentative and wobbly, and she was also unlucky to fall off bars at the '88 USSR Cup after her handgrip broke off - unfortunately this competition served as Olympic trials, and she finished 8th AA, so she was given the alternate spot. She had also been the Soviet alternate at the 1984 "Alternate" Games, so technically she would have been a 2-time Olympic alternate...
As a competitive swimmer back in those days and not knowing very much about gymnastics this has to be 1 of my absolute favourite floor routines. Had it on vhs video and would watch many times.. my overall favourite gymnast was and always will be Svetlana Boginskaya
Svetlana was exceptional in the sport.... there has never been another one with her physics and charisma. I loved her floor routines, but she was really good at all four events. But I have to say, that still to this day I catch myself, whistling Oksana's floor music, during the day.... it might be my all time favourite floor routine also.

Elena Shoushounova had a 9,975 in the All Around and scored a 9,975 in the Final Competition. This resulted in a score of 19,950 and the Gold Medal. Oksana Omelianchik had a 9,900 in the All Around and a 10,000 in the Final Competition which summed up to a 19,900 and the Silver Medal.
@@withtheangelss You are welcome. 😊 This rule changed for the first time in 1989.... The gymnasts qualified for the Finals back then and started again from a Zero.... I liked the old system though, but I got used to it and it seemed fair to me. When it changed in 1989 I was still okay with the new rule, but I had a hard time accepting the scoring the way it is now. That's why I probably lost interest in 'modern' Artistic Gymnastics' and enjoy watching the epic battles from the past. 💚
The whole atmosphere at the Europeans, with her performing this Floor routine in the Final was almost magical. She enjoyed herself so much and the judges went along with her. You are right.... really precious!

Oksana started a new trend back in 1985. This back and fourth series in her second tumbling pass was so unbelievable. Her connections at Uneven Bars and also her Balance Beam routine were outstanding.... Although I was always an Elena Shoushounova 'fanboy' 😅😉 I got to admit... Oksana was always close to my heart. Especially because of her cute Floor Exercise. It was so nice, with the birds chirping in the beginning... Maybe the best routine of all times!
My nephew is 20 years old now, but when he was little he looked over my shoulder as I watched this routine one day, and was enthralled. He often asked me to watch it. He called it the "tweet tweet" video! Don't tell him I told you this, he'd die from the embarrassment 😊

She's still electric. I wonder how she'd score by today's standard ...even through she performs two skills illegal by today's terms - the double run, and the full twisting Arabian dive roll.
@@Boban1611They can punchfront but not into another tumbling pass. Not so much illegal (they can!) but they don’t get credit for the 2nd tumbling pass after the punchfront.
She had so much fun obviously. I remember so many routines, especially the girls from the US - they almost had a face cramp (smiling) at the beginning and the end of a routine, greeting the judges. But you didn't see the enjoyment during their routine. Oksana was light hearted at this European Championship. I am not "American Idol Material" either.... but singing is not about being a great singer or not. It is about the joy you feel, while doing it... or the pain... depends on what song you chose and what feelings you connect with the words.

In the Women's Gymnastics the acrobatic elements with a sideward takeoff and / or landing into a roll was banned shortly after the Olympic Games 1992 in Barcelona. Elena Shoushounova from the USSR was famous for this skill. She performed it throughout her career.
Up to this day, I enjoy watching this routine and remember how I felt back then.... I still hum or whistle the melody from time to time.... almost 40 years later. It is such a joy to watch her perform!
