I totally agree with you. I think this might be the best floor routine in the history of female artistic gymnastics. The commentator says it all at the beginning... *Spring has arrived...* That's the feeling I get, with the birds singing - mixed with her beautiful choreography and difficult acrobatics.

@@vc23 Yes... he seemed to be very fond of her also. He predicted a great future for her. Sadly she couldn't pull through. Elena Shoushounova and Daniela Silivas were the two gymnasts who battled each other on their road to the 1988 Olympics and fascinated the spectators back then. Still this routine is one of the best floor routines in my opinion. Oksana will always be one of my favorite gymnasts. 😄

    • @MrMartinportnoy
      @MrMartinportnoy 3 года назад +10

She wasn't really in top form, even already at the '87 Worlds, her beam work had grown consistently tentative and wobbly, and she was also unlucky to fall off bars at the '88 USSR Cup after her handgrip broke off - unfortunately this competition served as Olympic trials, and she finished 8th AA, so she was given the alternate spot.
She had also been the Soviet alternate at the 1984 "Alternate" Games, so technically she would have been a 2-time Olympic alternate...

    0:08
"Last gymnast on floor is Oksana Omelianchik from the Soviet Union.
And to be totally honest to you, dear viewers, the decision has been already made in favor of Elena Shoushounova.
Oksana has a score of 9.900 - even a 10 wouldn't get her to the first place.
But she needs 9.875 points to become second.
And do you hear what's happening in the gymnasium? Spring has arrived...
    1:09
    Yes... Twisting somersault, punch front
She has some temperament, the little one
And if you ask me: I think she has the brightest future of all the gymnasts we have seen today
    1:42
    Beautiful double piked somersault
Oksana Omelianchik, from Kiev in the Ukraine
Even the audience, in the not sold out Skating Hall in Helsinki, are thrilled by this 15 year old gymnast
from the Soviet Union - and you will definitely hear from her in future.
    2:18
Yes - she even has to come back on to the podium
Maybe a 10? It is only about the second place, but this spot she will achieve with her performance definitely.
    2:40
The total triumph of the gymnasts from the Soviet Union, with a short intervention of Maxi Gnauck at the Uneven Bars,
winning the title together with Shoushounova - has been completed.
Yesterday they won the All Around - and today... this Europeans finishes with the third 10 overall, the 10 on
Floor Exercise and the second place for Oksana Omelianchik."

This rule changed for the first time in 1989....
