I don't know if you'll see this, but I'm hoping you do. I saw you doubting yourself during this video and I want to tell you, your doing amazing👏. Think about it for a second, your writing a Book series which is stressful in and of itself. Your writing 8 different perspectives and inspiring writers like me to write their 1st or 20th books. You are an amazing person and writer💜.
I’m really enjoying following your process. I’m a lawyer, but I’m a writer at heart. I still freelance and I have a degree in English. I have a hard time being creative after being analytical all day at work so your tips are helpful.
Similar position here - I am a scientist, but also a writer at heart. I also have a hard time being creative after being analytical all day - which is why my current NaNo progress is really slow.
Sometimes I subconsciously delay finishing my story because I’m not ready to let it go. That being said; I can’t believe you can write that much in one day! That’s incredible! If I can put out 5000 words a week I consider that to be something to be really proud of and I don’t even have any small children to take care of any longer. You’re just phenomenal!
Oh, man. I deeply felt what you described you were going through at the frustrating 10 pm mark! I'm blown away that you were able to push through and get past 10,000 words (plus more plotting!) before crashing, Sarra. Amazing progress!! Wow, I'm exhausted now. Haha!
I know I am late coming into here but I wanted to let you know that we all struggle at times. Thank you for sharing your experience. You are so strong and a total ass kicker!
I am so glad you were able to get over 10,000 words!! And I want you to know we are all very proud of you. I personally had to take a few days off I have been feeling super exhausted but I will be back at it tomorrow!
My grandfather used to close himself up for months in a hotel in Atlantic City while he wrote Boardwalk Empire. He always said he couldn't write with any noises (my grandmother and his kids.lol) around.
I've been loving the vlogs! It's refreshing and humanizing to see that other creators/artists struggle as much as I do to create. It resonated me when you questioned how other writers can pump out books like it's no problem, as I have the same problem with drawing. Keep it up!
When I had pain in my back between the shoulder blades, I found it was from stress, anxiety, and tense muscles. (I was going to court reporting school at the time.) I think I took all sorts of stuff for it, and nothing really seemed to work. Finally went away when I got my license. Anyway, I think you did a great job as a wannabe writer who's happy to get 500 words in a day. Thanks for sharing your journey. Barbara
Don’t beat yourself up. You’re doing such an amazing job. I love watching your vlogs and I can’t wait to read this book. You’re one of my favorite authors😝
Can’t believe your taking on so much with kiddos and nano and the blogs! Remember to take care of yourself. ❤️ There are so many good yoga videos on RUclips for back pain. Lots of hip openers and gentle an exercises will make a world of difference for us writers who spend so much time sitting! You’ve got this!
Ah Sarra, I am so sorry you're in so much pain. Child's pose is really good if you look it up. I have also used those patches that heat up, if you know what I mean. they are about six inches wide or so and look like a giant bandage that you stick on your back and it heats up. I had two herniated discs from a car accident years ago. I had horrible chronic pain for about two years. I will send you some positive healing energy if you would like to use it. Great job on 10k in one night! WOW. I haven't really been serious about my word count, but I'm not on a deadline like you are. I am very happy with my 2,168 today. I am just trying to keep my word count above the recommended average, and pad it as much as I can. My biggest day was day one when I had 2,711 words. Still waiting for another day like that, but I'm at 15,712 in eight days, so I have nothing to whine about. I can't imagine 10k in one night! You can do this Sarra! You are just under a lot of stress. Don't forget to breathe. I hope your pain goes away very soon. :)
Believe it or not, back pain can indicate a urinary tract infection. I've had it happen as well as one of my old bosses. It's the weirdest thing! Congrats on getting 10k words. Rooting for ya!
I'm so sorry you struggled during your night away. I could feel your emotions through the screen. I'm THRILLED that you passed the 10k point though! Congrats!! A new day, a new chance for words!
Thanks for letting us follow your journey. Your video motivates me to match work ethic because some of us don’t have writing buddies or haven’t formed a community. Or maybe it’s just me haha.
Amazing result! I am a newb to your channel (have binged more videos than I would care to mention, downloaded and completed the 'plan your novel' resource and am looking into how I can introduce planners into my routine!) I did Nano once over a decade ago and have been looking for a way back in ever since. Loving coming along for the ride. Your channel is really helping me climb out of the rut that has been 2020 both in my writing and personally, so thank you!
You are doing so well Sarra! It's easy to hear your disappointment in this vlog, but it's also good to hear you being good to yourself too. I am not a parent, and I have no idea how y'all survive on such little sleep in the early years, but you're so inspiring in your dedication to writing!
Back pain could be from inflammation, try not having milk and sugar in your coffee. It's amazing how much you get done on these retreats. I am always inspired by someone who can organize like this and crank things out.
I absolutely love these vlogs, sharing your experiences and tips are so helpful and inspiring. Well done on your progress! I know it's not what you intended, but as we've learned this year - just take what you have as a win.
Thank you for taking us with you on this journey Sarra! And for being real! Pushing through and knowing when to take some rest. You are truly an inspiration.
Impressed! I tried to studying again, a few years back. I was convinced I could pull all nighters writing my essay at home. No such luck, the times they are a-changing. I just fell asleep!!! :)
Woah! You did gooooooodd!! Seriously though, I've been ahead of you on word count for the whole week and now you 've left me in the dust! My current count is 14,719 but I haven't written anything today yet.
Loved this video, I feel for you. I've been going through the same thing with my mum's health over the past years from 2017 (earliest), I haven't bounced back fully in the terms of strength with my degree. I was starting to feel the burnout in early 2020 before lockdown. But I've started to come around and actually been focused. Stop beating yourself up and just do what you can when you can! You'll be grateful that you've done something that day!
I have not written today yet not sure if it will happen but I know sometimes if I am sitting in a different way or sleep wrong it will tweak my back and it can take ages to get it to right itself. My world was turned upside down last month with a major health scare for my husband and I have been hanging with him while he's home and that means a lot of sitting in bed with my wedge and a pillow which is what caused my issue. I'm glad to see you got your count and you got this girl.
This video is everything, Sarra. :) When you went to the rooftop and I saw all those people up there, I thought, these people are in the presence of greatness and don't even know it. ;0)
Sarra that'ts amazing, I really felt what you were going through, I know how hard it can be when the story just doesn't want to stick. congratulations on getting up to date on your word count, love watching your vlogs and I hope to some day do a one nighter at a hotel and just go for it. Thanks so much for sharing Sarra!!!
It's so motivating to watch you work. I'm a newish writer in my early thirties. I did my first Nano last year and did really good. Did the 50k then did another 80k during 2020 and just finished the first draft of my story this September. Nano 2020 is going HORRIBLE for my second draft. I am so far behind...and I have a lot of free time during the day, no kids, etc, so I don't know what the problem is! I feel like I have a huge mental block, almost like adult ADD going on this year, and it's been so much worse during the pandemic stuck in my studio apartment with my husband for most of the year. Think I'm finally getting that "cabin fever". I was talking about a hotel for a night or two during the month with my husband before I saw you posted this. Think I might actually do it and try and get some good writing in (and possibly save my marriage, haha)
Thanks for posting this. I really admire your perseverance, dedication, and commitment. Yes, other authors publish 10-12 books a year but they don't start from scratch. Using 8 POVs and wrapping up a series is unique in the world of authorpreneurs even if they're more common in certain genres. I've read many series that follow the same basic beats/structure in genres like Romance or Mystery. If you're still longing to have that type of output/career, maybe move into a genre that's better suited to such a process. I've been following your channel long enough to know, you'll stick with your current genres though but maybe dial back the number of POVs. Whatever you decide to do, I'll continue to cheer you on and follow your progress.
One technique you missed all night... especially with back pain, take a shower or bath. Physiotherapists call it hydrotherapy. But two things happen for me... One the muscles in my back relax and two my mind relaxes and thoughts flow. What ever block you had at 10pm would have worked out in a shower. I hope you try it next time your back is giving you fits. Adding essential oils to the bath or shower would also be a huge boost. Also, a bath or shower would help you fall asleep faster (another sleep hygiene technique). ❤🌅🌵😷
I love how you have crystals by your working station. I do the same thing! Congrats on being successful! Who knows how much harder it would have been piecing it together elsewhere!
I think it's a GREAT result! I can't even imagine getting 10k in one day! Wow!!! Also maybe the hotel retreat is better in two nights in the row? One to get in the swing and one to actually flow? Still you did amazing!!!
Hotel. Coffee. Spray! ‘Awake and create’. Wow! Loving that spray idea.. How many times i failed wordcount coz feeling so sleepy and just cant keep my eyes open. Haha.. all the best for you and your new novel.
The universe supports you and all of us here on your channel. Your adventure has definitely kicked me into gear and I just booked myself a night away for myself as a CEO date and Writing Retreat. Sending you heaps of energy and I love your video. P.S - Eucalyptus is great for breathing. Just put a drop on a kleenex beside you and it will help a lot. Learned that from my son's daycare when he was a year old. We still do that to this day when needed :)
Wow on your word count. I do hope you're careful with your back, having had my share of hip issues. I'm at 12500 or so -- a little behind, but I can manage by breaking it down into smaller chunks. I don't have a preorder looming though. Love the music you keep choosing for these vlogs.
Hi Sarra.. you did AWESOME! Give yourself some space. This is your first retreat since before Evie was born. A lot of changes have occured since then. Yeah, having to replace those words sucks... but you need to let go of the negative energy surrounding you and know that you CAN do this! Also remember, you got a later start than you intended so you really needed a new word benchmark. As to hubby having both children... he's Dad, he's got this! After all, didn't he set you up to follow your 'heartbreathings'? He is behind you, encouraging you - just as Bob does for me. As I type this, I am sitting in a hotel for a single night. I've not even filled in my Preptober to have a road map and I have zero words for Nano. There are about 10k on the book that I'd wanted to release 18 months ago. I'm determined to dump words tonight. The story is FINALLY speaking to me and I'm anxious to reveal the rest of the story. I have a Frostyccino from Wendy's, a bag of sugar free peppermints and a Midsummer's Night black candle from Yankee Candle that I inhale on breaks. WE GOT THIS! Creative Blessings!
Be careful with your back, please! I had pain too, and ignored it for way too long. Now I have 3 herniated discs in my L4, L5, and L6. The first time they herniated, I was bed bound for almost two months. It took four months to recover. I've agitated my Sciatic nerve, and so far this time I've been down for two weeks and it's looking to be two more. If you're having really bad pain, have an MRI, so that you know what you're dealing with. I wish I would have had it before I had all the problems, I could have prevented a lot.
I’m loving these diaries. I”m looking at the 3 thumbs down and don’t understand how ppl can negate your video and your journey? Where are these naysayers from? The hide behind anonymity - it p!sses me off. I’m an Aussie I can be crude 😊
maybe your back hurt more because you're stressed? or also because you've been sitting a lot at a laptop? would foam rolling help? I hope you feel better soon. You did a lot.
Late to upload, but this one took a long time to edit! Hope you enjoy. Keep me updated in the comments on how your month is going so far!!

The writing process is sometimes messy.

I love that you gave yourself grace and went to bed, rather than pushing yourself to pull an all-nighter. 10k is fantastic!
Your final word count is a little more than my total word count this whole NANOWRIMO. that’s amazing!!
Oh, man. I deeply felt what you described you were going through at the frustrating 10 pm mark! I'm blown away that you were able to push through and get past 10,000 words (plus more plotting!) before crashing, Sarra. Amazing progress!! Wow, I'm exhausted now. Haha!

@@HeartBreathings I know! Thanks! I have never written like this. But I took your videos to heart and created a detailed outline. Thanks so much!

Congratulations. You're doing great. You've pretty much tripled my total so far. Writing has been a slow moving train for sure lately.
