I feel like i wandered into church. All these people praying and blessing and such. Honest question: how does prayer work? what is it supposed to achieve? Does it actually make "God" change his mind and not send earthquakes, or is it just supposed to give people the warm & fuzzies after their sh!t has been destroyed?

I'm in Eureka by the zoo. It wasn't that violent, but it was longer than usual. I was able to put my shoes on and go into the backyard while the ground was still shaking.
We had an earthquake here in Tulsa Oklahoma a couple years ago. At first it didn't occur to me it was an earthquake. I thought a plane was going to hit us. Then it kept going & I realized I should get in a doorway. I had one cat at my feet but the girl freaked out & screamed for me. I had to go rescue her from the living room. Poor baby she was frozen & screaming we're supposed to get tornadoes not earthquakes in Oklahoma. So now I've thankfully avoided twisters even living in various parts of tornado Alley my whole life. But I've been in an earthquake. A 5.6 quite a bit away from me but I've experienced it. I don't want to experience your guy's earthquakes though. I'll keep our baby ones thank you & continue to dodge tornadoes too please.
It was strong in ferndale. I felt the floor drop out from under my feet and if I had not grabbed the wall I would have toppled. moved furniture, moved my fridge and a very heavy cabinet

My kids and I were on the freeway in the East Bay when the alarms went off. We relocated from Arizona about 3.5 years ago for medical treatment, and this was my family's first serious quake. We did not have an evacuation plan before yesterday, but we do now!

My late hubby and I used to live in Eureka. Then we moved to Fortuna were our daughter was born in 2005 and then we moved back "home" in 2006 which is outside Sacramento. Glad I missed this earthquake

I pray for all the wonderful folks in Eureka, a beautiful and peaceful place. An empty beer can fell off my refrigerator, that was it. Alas, it was about a mere 6.6, as reported in this release. For this, I laud NBC's objective journalism, as other news outlets called it a 7.0 which it absolutely was not.
The problem with these early news reports is that they are not confirmed so the 6.0 in Humboldt county was upgraded 30 minutes later to a 7.0. That's a significant increase in magnitude. As far as the aftershocks are concerned, the one thing to remember is that after the Japan earthquake 20 plus years ago, the aftershocks were as strong if not stronger than the initial earthquake. It's best to be prepared and not let your guard down. And for heavens sake, don't run down to the beach to watch a tsunami coming.

People living on the West Coast should be wary of Tsunamis. The highest recorded was in 1958 at 1720 feet on the Alaska coast. One half that size would be catastrophic if it occurred anywhere from Anchorage to San Diego. The Tsunami that took out Fukushima was only around 46 feet, traveling at a speed of 500 MPH..
Sad thing about any given location anywhere USA is people don't prepare, then expect government to help them within an hour and expect the power company to get electricity back on in the same time. Heaven forbid their binge watching Netflix is interrupted. In Cali when there is a planned outage due to expected high winds, people are notified. Yet they complain and create conspiracy theories.

Albeit inaccurate. Only the USGS reports should be considered reliable. Reports coming in immediately after any emergency event are spotty at best. Cellphones are equipped with an emergency alert warning system that is the best reliable info whether you own a TV or not. Conditions are changing by the minute and watching a RUclips video of a news broadcast from 2 hours ago is hardly helpful for getting up to the minute reports.
I remember the magnitude 10.0 earthquake on November 5th. Forecasting massive devastation with a shift of the continental plates, and tsunami warnings for the entire planet.
Scary to get an extreme earthquake alert on your phone and then feel some of it. My adult granddaughter called me about 2 minutes after the big one near Eureka. And said she grabbed the animals and drove to the marshes where there's no trees or buildings.
Hmmm. Marshes would be down near sea level, which is just where the main tsunami flow would be channeled. So that doesn’t sound like a very safe place to shelter!
The USGS app put one of those earthquakes at magnitude 7.1 and only 1 mile deep. So people will definitely will feel them in that area. A lot of shaking probably.
I’m in SF, I didn’t feel anything. Eureka is actually really far so it’s no surprise. In case of severe aftershocks and power loss, I’d suggest you guys up there load up on blankets and bottled water if a “big” one hits. Good luck.

Yes, some of that red area is tens of miles from the coast and has an elevation of hundreds of feet. That terrain is very unlikely ever to see a drop of tsunami water.

10 miles from Eureka, that was a very exciting quake, solid 20 seconds of flowing waves. No jolting just rolling.
