      We had an earthquake here in Tulsa Oklahoma a couple years ago.
      At first it didn't occur to me it was an earthquake. I thought a plane was going to hit us. Then it kept going & I realized I should get in a doorway.
      I had one cat at my feet but the girl freaked out & screamed for me.
      I had to go rescue her from the living room.
      Poor baby she was frozen & screaming we're supposed to get tornadoes not earthquakes in Oklahoma.
      So now I've thankfully avoided twisters even living in various parts of tornado Alley my whole life. But I've been in an earthquake. A 5.6 quite a bit away from me but I've experienced it.
      I don't want to experience your guy's earthquakes though. I'll keep our baby ones thank you & continue to dodge tornadoes too please.

      I feel like i wandered into church. All these people praying and blessing and such. Honest question: how does prayer work? what is it supposed to achieve? Does it actually make "God" change his mind and not send earthquakes, or is it just supposed to give people the warm & fuzzies after their sh!t has been destroyed?

      @Sleeplessin2012 Yeah I think I agree with you. During the 87 quake I was in a 5 story building and that damn rolling went on for what seemed like an hour. It was really only 3 minutes or so.. but man it seemed like forever. I much prefer the giant jolt and it's over.

    People living on the West Coast should be wary of Tsunamis. The highest recorded was in 1958 at 1720 feet on the Alaska coast. One half that size would be catastrophic if it occurred anywhere from Anchorage to San Diego. The Tsunami that took out Fukushima was only around 46 feet, traveling at a speed of 500 MPH..

    I live close to the epicenter, which was off Ferndale. It was a decent quake, not violent but tantalizingly and quiveringly close to real destruction. An empty beer can fell off my refrigerator, that was it. Alas, it was about a mere 6.6, as reported in this release. For this, I laud NBC's objective journalism, as other news outlets called it a 7.0 which it absolutely was not.

  • @craigjgomez
    @craigjgomez 11 months ago +28

    The problem with these early news reports is that they are not confirmed so the 6.0 in Humboldt county was upgraded 30 minutes later to a 7.0. That's a significant increase in magnitude. As far as the aftershocks are concerned, the one thing to remember is that after the Japan earthquake 20 plus years ago, the aftershocks were as strong if not stronger than the initial earthquake. It's best to be prepared and not let your guard down. And for heavens sake, don't run down to the beach to watch a tsunami coming.

    • @TheJanet4321

      Sad thing about any given location anywhere USA is people don't prepare, then expect government to help them within an hour and expect the power company to get electricity back on in the same time. Heaven forbid their binge watching Netflix is interrupted. In Cali when there is a planned outage due to expected high winds, people are notified. Yet they complain and create conspiracy theories.

      Albeit inaccurate. Only the USGS reports should be considered reliable. Reports coming in immediately after any emergency event are spotty at best. Cellphones are equipped with an emergency alert warning system that is the best reliable info whether you own a TV or not. Conditions are changing by the minute and watching a RUclips video of a news broadcast from 2 hours ago is hardly helpful for getting up to the minute reports.

      Hmmm. Marshes would be down near sea level, which is just where the main tsunami flow would be channeled. So that doesn’t sound like a very safe place to shelter!

    The first epicenter is Rio Dell near Eureka which sits on the Eel River. I don’t understand why the tsunami warning doesn’t go farther up the Eel River whereas the tsunami warning goes well inland into Napa & Sonoma Counties.
    The only explanation is that there is a big dam on the Eel that a tsunami couldn’t breach. Is that right? Anyone?

    “ 1906. San Francisco and the surrounding area had experienced large earthquakes in the years 1838, 1865, and 1868, but those events were nothing like the destructive power of the MAGNITUDE 7.9 earthquake that ruptured nearly 270 miles of the then little understood San Andreas fault.”

    Someone should be accountable for the false alarm or warning of an eminent tsunami. In the Bay Area people were in panic mode.
    Next time people hear of another tsunami warning, they might ignore it because if this false alarm. It's scary just to think about it because the next tsunami warning could be a real on and people won't pay attention.

    • @nomenclature9373
      @nomenclature9373 11 months ago

      Was getting ready to head out to a park near the Bay. Delayed it until the warning was lifted. I figure better safe than sorry after seeing videos of the effects from the Japan tsunami on areas no where near Fukushima.

    I am sad to learn this:The san Francisco news said the Santa Rosa tsunami alert was really based on inland king tiding.
    Horror.
    Maybe that's why I had a dream i woke with water hitting my bed.
    Even now, i sleep with a lifejacket 4' from my bed. Paranoid, I know.
    But after today's news, maybe not.

    Hey, graphics department, those red circles are much bigger than necessary. Some people like to see the map to orient themselves. Oh, for goodness sakes, what's the biggest tsunami incursion California has ever seen? The amount of red that is not on the actual coast is ridiculous. This isn't Japan.

    • @cgage_01
      @cgage_01 11 months ago

      Really, now it's just scare mongering. USGS already upgraded it to a 7.0 i wish they would get their informationo fresh instead of just "Pete and Re_Peating " everything. Someone coming in 2 hours later who doesn't knpow what happened is going to panic.

    • @doverbeachcomber
      @doverbeachcomber 11 months ago

      Yes, some of that red area is tens of miles from the coast and has an elevation of hundreds of feet. That terrain is very unlikely ever to see a drop of tsunami water.
