I sure miss those days.

I know that Miss Parton had just started out on the show the year before. However, in hindsight, it's a bit much that she and the guest star George Jones not only sang no songs together but also didn't speak or interact and would only appear together oncamera during the closing credits. She obviously wasn't shy so I'm wondering if Mr. Wagoner didn't want to chance Mr. Jones . .asking Miss Parton for a date, etc.? Of course, it was totally Mr. Wagoner's show and call who got to sing/chat with whom during the show's shooting -and it would be several years before he became confident enough to have Miss Parton being the show's co-hostess instead of just 'the little lady' who sang duets with him and some of her solo songs.
While I was certainly a fan of his classic music, I've heard that being a member of George Jones' "Jones' Boys" backup road band was an absolute nightmare! Probably the worst job a Nashville musician could have back in those days! One of many stories I've heard was how he left his band stranded pennyless in England. They had to have their parents wire them money to fly back to America!

What a square head George Jones had. I’m glad it didn’t impact on his musicianship though. Speaking of which, kudos to the banjo player… his picking and bending on rocky top is excellent.
George liked his sauerkraut and sow belly, but was thin back then. Of course, Dolly was younger like all of us. But I preferred the more natural look. Stuff like this gave Ronnie Wood the idea to play pedal steel guitar on Stones' albums.
This has nothing to do with the clip, but it's a funny story nonetheless. At some point in Buck Trent's tenure with The Wagon Masters, they played a show with Grandpa Jones (probably The Opry), then both Porter and Pa had individual gigs to play in opposite directions. Unfortunately, either Buck or Pa picked up the wrong case when they left so Buck had Pa's instrument and vice versa but neither of them knew it until show time. Buck could make due thanks to his amplifier, but poor Pa! He said later "When I opened that case and saw all those knobs and wires I woulda' swore the dern thing was a short wave radio."
