I get really PISSED off when I think about how Don Rich is not in the country music hof. 😤
He sure deserves to be. Anyone can play the strings off a fiddle and then pick up a guitar and start singing like its nothing . Wish we had this kind of talent today ❤👌👌
Also Wynn Stewart

It's all political, my friend. Nothing more. Politics = BS.
No one else has that grin.
A really great show. This was when a musician could sing and play an instrument. I don't think I missed a Buck Owens show or a Hee-Haa. This entire group is very talented. There will never be anything like this again. R.I.P. Buck and Don.
Yup! My daddy+I. Especially. Loved those two. Country music yhows,( hee haw & the BUCK OWENS SHOW!)
Tommy Collins ( Leonard Ray Sipes ) was one of the main influences for Merle
Haggard. Merle's song "Leonard " is a tribute to his life long friend. Don Rich
( Donald Eugene Ulrich ) was originally the fiddle player for The Buckaroos with
Buck on lead guitar. Buck taught Don how to play and "Act Naturally" was the first
song Don took over lead guitar duties and as musical director of the band.
Johnny Russell wrote that big song for Buck Owens and it was later covered by Ringo Starr.🤔🎤🎼🎸🥁B.W.
Don was a good student. He played so well. Loved them together.
Thanx for that Jerry!
Don was such a badass.
One of the greatest guitar players ever
Don smiles big even when he sings. He is so cute 😊
I came into this by chance, and I must say I appreciated it a lot. Very moving at the end, with Wait A Little Longer Jesus...
Very professional, on all counts.
Mr. Don Rich, underrated to the bone. If there's a country band in heaven, Don's up their playing lead.
Best tenor singer that ever lived. Don Rich was as much a star as Buck.
He made it seem so easy. I love listening to him and (attempting) to sing along.
Buck depended on Don to decide when to add his harmonies. Not many "backup" singers are that good. When he died Buck was a completely different man.
Smilin' Don,Telecaster deity .
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!!! LOVED ME SOME DON RICH. WHAT A LOST. BUCK NEVER GOT OVER IT.
Yes. I hated most country when I was mine. Then dad brought home two buck albums. I told him : " ok !! Love Buck. Country can b good dad " Too bad don liked motorcycles. Duane Allman died on his Harley too. I do not think Buck ever made a full recovery after Don died. Just sayin' no dissing intended.
A many a Telecaster were sold because of Don Rich.
Hothero1980
You got that right!👍
I bought one and still pickin and grinnin at 56!
Give me a stacaster
@@mikefournier2601 ´
On Ken Burns history of country music , they mentions part of the Bakersfield sound was the switch to the Telecaster guitar as it had a cleaner sound . Always found that interesting.
Buck and Don Rich are "Together Again " God Bless Both. RIP
Don Rich was a superstar in his own right.
Don Rich was a genius and a great performer!
He definitely was. Very charismatic, too. It's a shame he died so young at 32.
@@downhome7500 That is truly a real shame. 🙁
Oh yes he was,,a great guitar player, singer and partner of Buck,,we know they picked up where they left off and are tearing it up!!
So talented!
Yeah man ! Don had that thing most people never have and he had fun with it. I think the kids now days call it "SWAGG" 🤣😁if i ever get halfway to making a Tele sound that cool and harmonizing without a care in the world, I will have accomplished my dreams x's 1,000 !😎🎙🔈🔉🔊🎸
Gone almost half a century, and still loved and missed..The great Don Rich RIP
how immensely talented was Don Rich.....just love the guy.....
who's don rich?

Got to shake Don Rich's hand in 1971 when they performed at a Fresno's club.
Buck did too!

Can’t help but smile every time I see Don with that huge smile of his. It’s contagious. He always looks like he is really enjoying himself.
There was only one Buck Owens your sadly missed Buck
They were great performers together that’s for certain. Don was wonderful, it really was devastating when he passed. It took Hee Haw to bring Buck out of his depression.
@@dalepxp8963 yes agree with you, Don was part of the early Hee Haa TOO
He is such an inspiration, much needed by today's young musicians.
I'd say you're spot on
Don was ALWAYS up, ALWAYS smiling. I hope he was happy driving down that highway for the last time. RIP Don
RIP Buck
I read where it was pretty much proven that his wreck was caused by the front tire separating on his motorcycle. Supposedly a recall was issued for the tires on dons bike....Damn shame. A lot of folks got hurt back then due to those tires and unfortunately Don paid the ultimate price for one of his favorite past times.
@@Gratefulman1965 I was aware he was killed in a motor bike accident.....but never heard this about his front tire separating.........how tragic.....
💕💕💕🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏great!
Does my heart good to see all the comments for Don Rich!! Dude was a hellava guitar player!! And could sing just as well!!!
After seeing this, Buck was right when he commented that his musical career ended the day Don Rich died. One complemented the other in their sound.
@ 24klc67: You know, that's just about right. You don't overcome a loss like that, not as tight as those two guys were, personally and professionally. Don was just so integral to the Buck Owens sound! It hurt the Buckaroos, too, because when Don was alive, they were one of the tightest bands in country music.
About the only comparable loss I can think of off hand would be when the Allman Brothers lost Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, within a year or so. Like Buck Owens, they carried on but were never the same. Oh, and Doc Watson losing his son and duet partner, Merle, to a farming accident in the mid-1980s. Doc soldiered on for years after that, but - even as great as he was -never found a real replacement for Merle.
That is so sad.
This is when country music had a meaning and I grew up listening to this music with my parents. So I would like to thank my mom and dad for teaching me about good music
Me too, back in the mid-60s I thought that C&W music was mostly Buck Owens with that very twangy guitar sound! Us kids used to play my dad's records when my parents were out! My dad was a member of the Columbia Record Club back then! We had one of those big 'entertainment centers', a 24" TV with a record player/AM/FM radio combo. It may have been a Fleetwood?
@@mr.blackhawk142 some had a short wave where Cuban communism was broadcast.
@James. You are totally Correct. Their Music was soooo great. ,played their own instruments, sang, wrote the music, the lyrics…. Makes musicians today look really BAD, I mean like HORRIBLE.
Ditto buddy, we had 1 tv growing up and it stayed on country shows on Saturday evening, much to my dismay. I'm so thankful for it now, because now I know classic country like this backwards and forwards and love it.
Ameny and friends Amen 🙏💞
The buckaroos were the best!! Rock on people!! They utterly kicked ass
July 17, 1974 Don died in a terrible bike accident in CA. Buck was so devastated he could not even mention his name for years. I cried when I heard this since we had been to see them a few months before. Tragic loss for his family of course and the Buckeroos.
Gone at 34...50 years ago in 2024
Buck and Don...2 legends. they turn a dark day into a brilliant one
Sure did...😃
They help me feel happy. I love them. I'll see them again someday.
One of the tightest bands ever. In the middle of about 250 shows a year they'd come in and record a season of TV shows in a couple of days. Most songs were done in one take. Hard to find a better group than Don, Doyle, Tom and Willie.
I love Buck Owens, Don Rich and the rest of the Buckaroos, even though I was just a kid when they were at their peak. A contemporary band that reminds me of them is Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives. I've seen them a few times live. I really like their lead guitar player, Kenny Vaughan. He does not have Don Rich's voice, but he is a superlative guitar player. These guys are keeping alive the kind of music Buck and Don and the Buckaroos did. Real country with some western swing to it.
True professionals.
These guys are why I play steel.
Better world then, no?
Yes
Everybody comes here for Don. We like you too, Buck.
An absolute iconic and legendary Country Music band. Buck Owens, Don Rich and the Buckaroos to me are Country Music royalty.
You just can't beat that immortal Bakersfield Sound! The Buckaroos and The Strangers were 2 of the greatest backing bands to ever tread the boards.
Great show... Don and Buck were great performers. Great suits! Clean cut! No tattoos, t-shirt, holes in jeans. It's class with Ron and Buck!
You meant Don, I know.
What a great show. Buck and Don sing so good together! Just perfect harmony. Country entertainment at its finest!
HOT DAMN that don can play!!!!
It's good to see Don get his due on the comments section.
Don Rich had an amazing stage presence. He and Buck were so good together.
Yes sir ! Buck and Don's voices together makes any problems i might have, evaporate almost immediately, that to me is supernatural ! God almighty himself moved through them two men because he knew that all his children needed to hear that and to hear it recorded for all time ! I believe that brothers and sisters !

You ever notice how Don could phrase and sign Excatly like Buck. He just got perfectly as a partner

I was 15 in 1966. Other teens were listening to the Beatles but I listening to Buck Owens then and still do along with other great country artist of that era...Country music is not country music anymore. I miss the "good ole days."
I was born in 62 . I was raised on Buck . Love him :)
I'm a '58 baby. I was one of those guys listening to the pop & rock (Guess Who, Gary Puckett, Hollies, Turtles, Carpenters, etc.) but Buck was in the house due to mom & dad. When I'd spend the night at aunts & uncles on weekends, they'd listen to Buck & watch the Porter Wagoner, Wilburn Bros. Show & listen to the Grand Ol' Opry. There was no escaping! Couldn't stand it then, but when I got out of the Army grew to love it. I remember hearing how Buck influenced the Beatles with his music & then Ringo recorded Act Naturally. Wow!
I was also born in 1951 and loved to listen to country music on the radio. There's nothing like that traditional classic country.
The crap they call C&W today is utter garbage. This is the REAL stuff.
Had to see Buck again and I love the stage clothes...
Don Rich, lead guitar, fiddle and vocal harmony. He was big part of Buck's overall sound. I like the way he played that guitar
. He went way too young in 1974 in a motorcycle accident. Buck said, "He was like a brother, a son, and a best friend. Something I never said before, maybe I couldn't, but I think my music life ended when he died.
Don Rich DEFINED the Buck Owens sound. He was a phenomenal singer in his own right. Yet another unheralded master.

Don Rich: get a close-up of my frettin' hand, not my pickin' hand
I came across this and while watching the man in the black tux appeared and Buck introduced him as Bud Mathis...I realized that is father of my best friend in grade school and Jr. High. My friends name was Anita. She was beautiful. Her father owned Mathis Brothers Furniture in Oklahoma. This blows my mind. Bud bought an Appaloosa stallion named moon from my father. Wow.
Very cool memory!! Thank you for sharing this with us.
So cute. My Mother had to yell at Buck when he would come over to the house to see my Uncle Jerry. Buck would scream down the street in his car and pull in to the yard. Mom was so scared he would hit us kids, so she spanked him. He was a big boy then. Buck, Bill Woods and Red Simpson would sit on the porch singing and picking there guitar. Mom walked to school with them back then. Daddy and my Uncles would go listen to them at the Blackboard every weekend. How funny that back then they were just a few annoying guys. ha ha. Then my Uncle Jerry brought his friends over to meet my Mother, Dan Blocker. :) Loved to see him on stage at the Crystal Palace but he had some bad language. We talked to Buck before his death and asked him if he made things right with the Lord. he didn't answer but he said he knows. The last time I saw him was at Hodel's Restaurant here in town. He passed away a few weeks later. Beautiful Funeral...
I'm sure your mother wasn't Dan Blocker. Your sentence needs a clarifying word or two. Thanks for the funny stories. Love it.
This was an era in Country music that will have no equal as for as talent and entertainment goes Buck was among the best.
R.I.P. Don! Your legacy lives on.

Makes me kind of sad how America has lost it's culture. Funny how back in the 60's, other countries would say Americans had no culture because they didn't have classic forms of art, opera or theater. Yet, looking back from todays point of view, we see how progressive the 60's really were with the diverse musical tastes, stage shows like Cats and Hair, and even things like the automobile culture and baseball and football.
Somehow, we've lost sight of all of what made that time and the country great. Today, it's all about money, sex and booze. There's nothing on TV, sports are so ridiculously commercialized that nobody cares anymore and culture? Music? A pale comparison to just a few years ago.
Makes me sad.
Harold Lloyd Look man, I feel the same way. Although, what you are describing is only the surface of popular media. There is a ton of great music out there, you just have to go and find it( like digging for gold in a pile of shit). The reason why this music resonates with us is because there classics and back then a lot of them we're just as under appreciated. Just imagine which songs will last longer, those which have historic values, emotional aspects, and narratives that are still relatable today or the songs that focus on money, sex, and booze? As the shit is washed out, the gold will become ever more clear.
Harold Lloyd Well back in in the 1960's everyone complained how it was all about money, sex, drugs and booze. I do agree that things have changed for the worse these days. But we still have Classic Country music. Buck Owens was awesome.
+Harold Lloyd Who care what people thought about the US.
MIKECNW. We do Mikie boy where are you from are you ashamed of your last name you fucking foreigner go home asshole we don't need or damn sure want you here do you care about the shithole that you came from ??? If not I guess we're stuck with your sorry ass from now on go home jerk !!!!!!
any a****** from another country who would dare suggest that Americans don't have culture has their head up their ass. Bear in mind we have only been around approximately 250 years not quite the centuries that other countries have had. The rest of the world mimics American culture, from the way they dress to the music they listen to. And don't forget America produced Paul Revere and the Raiders, piss on anybody that talks against our culture
I grew up on Buck Owens and stories of my Dad in Bakersfield, California. I appreciated Dwight Yokum showing his gratitude for Buck Owens.
I love me some Don Rich, but Buck had that voice. Truthfully, nobody could keep up with Buck in this era. He was country's greatest singer.
Thank you so much for posting these episodes,my friend.I started taking more of an interest in Buck Owens in the mid-90's.Don Rich was such a natural on the Telecaster as well as an all-around great musician.God forever bless both him,Buck & the other deceased Buckaroos who are all performing together again in Heaven,no pun intended.
It's fun watching them working out the bugs on the first show. They were comfortable about the rough edges because they were having fun. Don Rich was a joy to watch.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD - DON RICH... WHAT A LEGEND
Love that fender telecaster sound.
The Lennon and McCartney of Bakersfield--only with prettier harmonies!
As much as I liked RINGO’S version of, “Act Naturally,” I STILL prefer Buck’s! P.S. Both Buck and Guitarist Don Rich (The Master of The Telecaster) were BIG fans of The Beatles!
It must have been absolutely mind-blowing to have seen this band live back in the day. This TV show is live off the floor, one take, nothing hidden. These boys were unimaginably tight. Best clothes too.
Such phenomenal talent in every body here!
Don sang " Such a Pretty World Today" once, really surprised me he didn't go solo. But they were quite a team, quite a band.
Thankful for the videos we have now, sure can't get real country on radio anymore.

Buck Owens was a great artist! Great Tely tone by Don Rich! Old and good times...
Wow! How I miss real country music and these guys.
Great live performance...notice how strong and loud Buck's rhythm is. Now this is talent !!!!
Apparently Buck was a guitarist first then a singer. It’s unusual to hear the singer’s acoustic guitar on a lot of these old country shows, but since Buck was strong enough, you heard his loud and clear. Good observation!
ExACTly!!! Buck walks right up to the mic and sings and plays with the most confidence of anyone I've ever seen. This band was the bomb before the bomb was invented.
Just what I needed, Buck Owens Bakersfield country sound I first heard early 1970's...awesom musicians all of them. Thanks a lot!

The only way to make money was to play live and build a fan base. My dad was a picker and singer. He taught me early that Don Rich was the best. He and Buck were the best there ever was. Check out one of the Mathis Bros Furniture shows. They’re cutting up between each song and having fun. Nothing scripted. Amazing. I never get tired seeing of them. The first two I learned were Tiger by the Tail and The Bottle Let Me Down. I was six. Yep, six. Still play them.
What a good time for country music!..I'll always remember when Buck would do a skit with Roy Clark on Hee-Haw called Pickin and Grinin.
A little back story on Buck's records, specifically the 45's that went out for radio broadcast. Radio was all AM back in the day, pretty much Lo-Fi compared to FM and what we're used to now. Buck and his engineers equalized his broadcast records so that the sound would have a lot more clarity by adding treble and upper midrange beyond what one normally would for a hi-fi recording. Think about it... first time you heard "Tiger By The Tail" or "Act Naturally" on the AM car radio, remember how the sound jumped out?
I play Bass, but still think it's great how Buck said i like bass but i'm not giving it a whole track to itself.
Clarence Wooten. You're right good to know these things friend !!!! RS
I had no idea Buck had his own show before Hee Haw. COOL!!!
The Ranch Show was filmed in Nashville and the Hew Haw show in Bakersfield. All about the same time period.

There has never been a star like Don Rich. He was multi-talented, down-to-earth and a cool guy, but modest. I loved him as a kid and listened to the live at Carnegie Hall album easily a hundred times. To see the very first Buck Owens show and 'Buckaroo' played at the end to fade out is like a country music blessing. I was 11 years old when this show debuted.
My father loved this stuff and of course as a 1960's 11 year old that was looking toward Space (this of course was the middle of the Moon Shot Program) I whined when my dad made me watch this.
I was more into Rock in Roll growing up.
This and Porter Wagner was on. Saturday evenings if I remember correctly.
HOWEVER, now that I am a LOT older and I did live in Nashville back in the late 1970's Country Music has grown on me.
(I do have a fond memory of going to the Grand Ole' Opry BEFORE it was moved...1979 I believe was when we as a group went there)
Watching this show now reminds me of a simpler time. It was clean good entertainment and honest fun.
In fact I regularly listen to the Sat-Radio Country Music channels.
Outlaw Country, Willie's Road House, Prime Country, and Bluegrass Country quite often.
I still personally do not care for the 'New Country Music' channels. (Same goes for just about any of the 'New Rock' either)
And I agree with Harold Lloyd's post. This IS American Culture.
The one thing that still makes me laugh though is the outfits they wore.
Yes, this was the beginning of Color TV and all of that but the Country Outfits still make me chuckle... LOL
(As with just about everything in the 1960's...Loud Colors...)
Still, I am thankful and grateful that this was a part of my life even though I did not appreciate it at the time...
I really miss Buck, Don and the Buckaroos. I am grateful for the internet to relive the moments when country music was bonafide country and western with the performers dressing up in their great-looking cowboy suits. Most of the stuff the music industry tries to feed us these days is a fusion of
crap.
I love rock music..but. I can't get enough of don riches guitar..awesome !!!
Love hearing Buck strum that Fender acoustic guitar. It's said that Buck played rhythm guitar on Gene Vincent's Lotta Lovin' in '57
The world is indebted to the Mathis Brothers for bankrolling Bucks show. Today in Southern California 2020, ads for Mathis Brothers local furniture stores are all over the tv. They feature Rit Mathis , who I assume is a son of one of the brothers. Remember this was Bucks first show and it's live, and could not be any better. Those Nathan Turk cowboy suits are magnificant. And Tommy Collins, one of the pillars of the Bakersfield Sound, as a guest, it's too much.
Oh wow!!! such good memories....great show..Buck Owens and his Buckaroos was so good!!
Still playing this in 2019 and it makes me happy.Great artists.Grew up with this music, when my dad drove a truck all day...great memories.
Kay Adams song---what a tear-jerker!
I so wish Don Rich would have listened to Buck Owens. Buck Owens pleaded repeatedly to Don Rich to sell his motorcycle. Special people with lots of talent need some protection and guidance in preserving their lives. Don Rich was tragic loss to country music and the entire nation. Just think what a powerhouse genius like Don Rich could have accomplished if he had another 20 years in his career? I almost get ill thinking about what could have been accomplished had Don Rich just lived another 20 years.
Absolute GOLD!!! How did "Country Music" get so far from this? Fender Tellies were so suited for country with those twin single coil pick-ups.
I'm with you on that Steb especially in the hands of Don Rich. That twang ringing like a bell with that lean and clean tone through a fender amp pure country!
Don Rich, you have one of the greatest smiles I've ever seen! And ... you use it very well! Just WOW!! And you tear that guitar up!!!!! :-)
Comfort food in the form of music!
Love Don Rich, great voice, musician, I can imagine how Buck Owens missed him, such a shame he passed away.
I was born in Bakersfield California kern county hospital. In 1959 and remember going to see Uncle Buck in practice with the bands. Happy memories 🤗
It is rare to hear to such perfectly matched voices. I always thought it was buck singing his own harmony.
Buck Owens music. Would& always. Could rejuvinate. Moods. Back to life from deep gloom and depression. He was. Truly fantastic. Like that.

I love Buck Owens! He was just amazing. I'm 14 and I know that old country is just the best like Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline, and Merle Haggard etc. My daddy taught me well.
I'm 13 and knows that the old country is better than the new
Kayla Kluth thanks for showing young people the way
Marty Stuart owns the very Telecaster played by Don Rich in this video.
DOES HE? Thats frickin awesome.
I first got to listen to Buck Owens and other country artists in the late '60s, thanks to my dad. It gave us something to bond over, and I still love his music to this day. I love Marty Stuart's music and his show, too; he's carrying on the tradition. Both the Buckaroos and the Fabulous Superlatives are some of the most talented bands in country music history, in this fan's humble opinion.😊
