  • As I awaited a replacement battery for my Aventon Aventure, I decided to diagnose the issue with my dead battery by dismantling it. I was highly impressed with the quality of the components. These things are made to last and water-resistant to the extreme. There are rubber seals on the end caps and rubberized caulking holding the components in place. A classy piece of technology. .

    My Aventure’s battery failed the exact same way. I found your video and decided to take mine apart (what a pain) since I have a new one on order. The exact same component on the controller board failed the same way; even the mark on the plastic cover is nearly identical. My battery was 3 months out of warranty but I think Aventon owes us something if this is common. I do NOT expect to have to replace my battery every year.

    • @webopus

      Interesting. This confirms my belief that Aventon received a bad lot of controller boards and because of the pandemic had no efficient way to replace them. When I got my replacement battery, it included five pages of FEDEX Hazardous Materials Certification shipping information with 26 other names from around the country also receiving new Lithium Ion Batteries. To be fair, I had a bad battery in the Sondors Rockstar I purchased several months later. The signifcant difference was that Sondors replaced it within days and it took Aventon over a month. Customer Service matters when purchasing an E bike.

      Sorry, Just saw this post. That's very interesting and supports my theory that the chip manufacturer sent Aventon a batch of chips with the same flaw. You are correct. One should not have to replace a battery for many years.

    The battery is arranged as 13x3, So 39 cells is correct, but you have 13 groups. each group containing 3 cells in parallel. Those are not 1.6V cells. They are 3.6 cells. Full charge is 4.2V, mid charge is 3.6v. So 13 times. 3.6 is about 48V.
    I cannot see the range dial on your voltmeter, but you should be measuring 4 volts from B13 to B12, B12 to B11, etc. Not 8 volts, Yu're reading your meter wrong, or it's badly uncalibrated.
    You are right about the BMS being bad,

      Hi, Sorry. I have no information about the Giant line of eBikes. Have you contacted the manufacturer? We own 3 Ebike's - an Aventon Aventure, a Sondors Rockstar and a Specialized Turbo Levo. The lesson I've learned is to only purchase from well-established companies with impeccable service records. At this point I would only buy an Ebike from TREK or Specialized, and maybe a few other manufacturers. Companies that have a large network of outlets. Your blue wire is a signal wire it tells the controller the state of charge of the battery. The black and red will just power up the controller. To discharge the batteries just get a 12v bulb and attach it one at a time to each battery pack until it dies. Then move it to the next pack.

    I believe they are using the heavy aluminum casing as a heat sink for the battery. It must be effective since I've never felt the battery get even warm while charging.

    • @webopus
      @webopus  2 года назад

      Hi Mike, Replacing and soldering these components is outside my skill set. Although, I would give it a shot with some guidance. It would be a shame to recycle these batteries.
      I think you are right about the aluminum enclosure acting as a heat sink. Makes sense and it's certainly effective. Now that I have a normally functioning battery with which to make a comparison, I realize there were problems with the original battery from the start. One press the of the button is all it should take to turn the battery on. The original one usually took several attempts. The feedback I got from Aventon seems to confirm my suspicions that a bad lot of BMS chips were installed in a number of batteries. They are now in the process of replacing them. Thanks for the comment.

    • @mikebryant538
      @mikebryant538 2 года назад +1

      @@webopus I can't give any help regarding replacing the surface mount components. It's hard to say if these were faulty or if they were the victim of a bad controller chip. Perhaps you can find an enthusiast who can make use of the cells.

    • @webopus
      @webopus  2 года назад

      Stephen, yes, I had exactly the same situation. I have searched and searched for a place that might repair/replace the battery management chip but have been unsuccessful. These batteries that fit into the frame of the bikes are much more complicated to repair than batteries is that rest outside the frame. As you can see, disassembling one is a major job and extremely time consuming. So even if somebody had the appropriate BMS chip the cost of the time involved in assembly and reassembly would be prohibitively expensive. In the comments below somebody may have recommended a place in Las Vegas, but if I remember correctly, I contacted them and they were unable to do the job. If you find a place that can do repairs on these batteries please post it in the comments. It looks like I may also have a Sondors battery that I may need to repair. Have a good one and enjoy your E bike.

    Hello Charles - How long before Aventon responded with the new battery and how did they diagnosis the problem ?

    • @webopus
      @webopus  2 года назад +2

      Hi Juan, I diagnosed the problem by virtue of the fact that the battery would not turn on. A normal Aventon battery will light with a quick touch of the On Button, but mine was buggy from the start. After a month, it would not turn on at all.
      It took me 33 days from the submission of my warranty form until I received a new battery. I had to jump through quite a few hoops until I was finally able to contact the DIRECTOR OF CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE who resolved the delay within a few hours. If you are having trouble getting a response from Customer Service I strongly suggest that you file a complaint with the California Better Business Bureau website. That's how I ultimately resolved things. If you have any further questions, let me know.

I just got my Aventure and noticed the battery specs on the back show Nominal Voltage:47.32Vdc and Rated Energy: 657.748Wh. I thought this should say 720Wh according to all the posted battery specs. If you divide 657 by 47.32, I get 13.9. Shouldn't this be 15? Can you check to see what yours say? I called Aventon and they said, "make sure to balance your battery and you will get 720Wh from it" and some line about "lithium ion batteries are volatile and you will get a range" of output. I know there are supply chain issues and they are working to get bikes out with substitute part with "equal or better" parts if they have to change something. I'll be selling my Aventon Aventure ebike unfortunately due to a couple of issues that have NOT been addressed by CS or I'm being totally ignored by them which doesn't suprise me these days. First issue I'm having is the peak power or so called power on demand these ebikes have which is up to 1130w Peak isn't working properly on my bike. When going up seemingly small inclines the motor will start bogging out or lagging. Like its trying to peak but refuse to do so which in turn leaves me peddling even harder to keep the bike at a safe stable speed while climbing the small or medium inclines. Seems to only do this while peddling and if I just use throttle to go up incline the motor seems stable. Its definitely strange and I'm not the only one having this problem with this issue from my understanding.
    My second issue is that they seem to not want or even advertise battery for the Aventure! I'd like to have an extra battery but seems I can't even buy one from them. I'd also like to buy a controller as well since I'm pretty sure that's what is causing my power lagging while going up small inclines. CS is horrendous at this company! I was considering calling the BBB myself but didn't want to go that route but after reading this I may just go ahead and do this before my warranty runs out in May 2022.

      It looks like a 'thick film' 0805 resistor to me. The white ceramic substrate is all that is left. The resistance part used to be the screened-on film that was on top of it. You have to seriously go beyond its rating to burn it up like that. The yellow tantalum capacitor is actually more likely to fail (shorted) than the resistor. The resistor may have been in series with it. If you can prove to yourself that the resistor is in series with the capacitor, and the capacitor measures a short circuit, you can likely replace both and bring the battery back to life (assuming you can get it put back together). If that was a series resistor, its value would have been around 5-10 ohms.
