I just wanted to say thank you again. I ordered the universal bleed kit you suggested, and followed your step by step instructions. This video was easy to follow and allowed me to do this myself. We have the Aventure Aventure bikes and they are heavy to transport so being able to do this myself was wonderful. Appreciate the help so much!
Worked as advertised. Thank you for the recommendation. The only thing different for me was it took awhile to get all the air (bubbles) to work their way out of the system. Your video was clear and straight forward.
Thanks for this. I was paying $20 per brake on my Aventon Level to get this done at the local shop. I had no idea how simple it was. I'll be doing this myself for now on.
Saw this video last year…I finally got the kit…I saw your video just now…I’m doing exactly what you did…we have each the Aventure and we love them…I’ll keep you posted..
not knowing the first thing about bike brakes, I was afraid I would mess things up if I tried to bleed the brakes myself. But you made it look so easy. And it was. Thank you for this quick and simple video I can now enjoy riding my bike again knowing that I won't have to haul it 50 miles to the nearest bike shop.
I've been searching for this very kind of tutorial for my Aventure. I've lost most of the brake pressure in my rear brake and I took it to the bike shop while I was on a ride the other day. They tell me it most likely needs to be bled. I was curious what the procedure was to bleed the brake line and was very happy to learn how easy it is to do. I think I'm going to purchase a bleed kit on Amazon and do this myself rather than paying the bike shop every time it needs to be done. Thanks a lot for making a tutorial on this. It's much appreciated.
Just got my Aventure today and it needs a rear brake bleed right out of the box. Wish they had included a kit with the bike, seems a common problem. Glad to see it's not too bad to perform myself from this video though.
DUDE THANK YOU!!! I just got an e-bike and I been spending $20 for brake pads. Thinking that was the issue. Until I notice there was fluid. This was the first video I found and helped me so much. I have a Dakeya and worked well. Thanks again 🙏🏽
Excellent tutorial. I just did this to my wife and my Aventure’s. I noticed that pumping quite vigorously seemed to get more air from further down the line. Also, before capping the screw, I added a few more drops from the bottle just to top off and left it squeeze out on it’s own. They feel better than new I think.
Thank you very much for the video. I just put my Pace 500.2 together and the right lever was mushy out of the box. I ordered the kit you linked to. Cheaper and faster than a trip to the bike shop.
The universal kit in the link only works for the top "burp" bleed method you demonstrate in the video. The kit does not have an adapter small enough for the Zoom caliper plug so you can't do the full bleeding technique. The burp method was good enough to get my brakes to work though. Thank you!
I used a different “universal” kit bought on Amazon to bleed the spongy rear brake on my Aventure. (Zoom brakes also) The kit you used has a plunger/stopper included in it, that’s handy. The one I used has a clamp that goes on a clear plastic tube to seal it. It works but it’s a little bit more difficult to use. Snugged up the all the brake fittings a tiny bit while I was at it. Haven’t had any issues in the 1000+ miles since bleeding it. Appreciate the video!
I really appreciate this video. I’ve always been leery of bleeding hydraulic disc brakes. Generally speaking I have no problem doing anything with the bike from changing tires to putting on a mid drive E bike motor. But for some reason hydraulic brake system has always made me nervous. But I guess it goes back to when I was racing motorcycles many many years ago. We did not use hydraulic brakes in those days, it was drum brakes so just lack of experience with hydraulic systems. Again thanks much, this comes at a good time.
Like others have mentioned - Thank You and much appreciation. Finding self-help videos on YT is easy, finding the ones that get right to the point while being excellently demonstrated is a different story. Your video nailed it. BTW, when you post the video about a complete brake fluid replacement I'll bookmark that too. My new bike came with hydraulic brakes and they became soft after ~160 miles. The factory offered to pay to have a local shop do the work but thanks to you I'll do it myself (in a much shorter time than driving my bike to the bike shop would take). Safe riding!!
Thanks for watching! So glad my video helped you. Since I made this video I have been reviewing so many new bikes that it might take forever before I do a full brake bleed on my Aventure.
Thanks Scott! I purchased the recommended star keys and bleed kit from your links about 6 months ago for my A1. Thanks for this detailed video that shows me how to do this myself, and saving me some dough! 💰
Purchased the kit and now im back to follow along, appreciate you making this video. Another suggestion is a video explaining when you need new brakes versus just needing to bleed them like this? I almost just got new brakes until I found this video.
Thank you for such awesome video on pumping brake fluid, today I changed my brake pads on my Aventon Aventure bike and brake lever still sinks and that’s why I’m watching your video 😅 I have same exact bicycle same color as well with 1,600 miles on it already

Thank you so much for a great video tutorial. I had already bought a universal kit which, had I just tried to use that would have been a nightmare. All I needed from it was one nipple and the cup and little stick, boom done! It did come with the right star wrench though and I can add it to the 50 other ones I have.😀

So it sounds like we need to do this when we get to much play/travel in the brake lever before breaking starts? Just got a new aventure and I feel it moves to far before applying any brakes.
It should. They use Textro brakes. I have the Aventure 2 and have not had any issues with my levers so I haven't needed to use it, but the kit is pretty universal.
@@scotthardesty That gives me a good idea, thank you! I'm at almost 600 now, so I should probably do it. I took it in for a tune up at around 200 but I am not sure if they did a brake bleed or not then.
Hi Scott. I am in the process of upgrading my new Aventure and trying different things out. Have you ever or would you recommend a larger front sprocket for our pedal cadence to kinda match up better with the Aventures higher speeds? Have you done a video about that or tried it or know a video I can see about that? Thanks Scott.
I'm in a couple of different Aventon groups on Facebook. I have seen some people switching ours to a 52-tooth front sprocket but I haven't done it myself. I put on a shorter crank (the attached video shows the mods I have done and part of it shows the distance in length with the factory crank and the new one to include links to the shorter crank, if needed). I suggest you search within the groups to learn more about the front sprocket sizes and what they do. Good luck with your search! ruclips.net/video/guDxQVVOGVo/видео.html
Great question. The fluid that was put in the brake lines could have been a darker color that the bike shop used when they did it. I hadn’t thought about that. I’m not a bike pro by any means but that makes more sense than the fluid being bad after only 800 miles.
@@scotthardesty got the kit two days ago and it worked out. Minus and a big minus the fact that it is definitely a pain trying to push fluid through the brake caliper up to the handlebar, especially when they don't give you the appropriate size fitting. So your advice is on the money you definitely gotta get yourself a syringe or do something else to work that issue out. Luckily I don't mind having my hands drenched in mineral oil.
I’m getting close to 200 miles, and I’m in the Sierra, so every ride has hills and hard braking. So far so good, but keeping a close watch on how the brakes feel.
Excellent video! I just did the job in 20 minutes and didn’t spill a drop…in the driveway with the porch light on. The star key came with the kit you linked…an allen wrench style with two stars…the big one fit. You made this easy.
Scott, you need to put one of the very small o-rings on the small end of the adapter before you lock it into the cup. Also, the lever needs to be loosened and leveled with the ground. Check out "Syd fixes bikes", she has one of the best videos on this topic.
@@scotthardestyoh ok that makes things easier my front brakes are completely soft and make a air noise when you squeeze them so I plan on bleeding them to see if that works
You sure about that? As far as I can tell, it had everything needed for a full brake bleed. Since I have only had to do the lever bleed on these brakes, I have not had to do a full bleed.
@@scotthardesty , thanks but the fitting at the rear is smaller, I ordered a Zoom kit, I’ll see how it works. Your video is actually very well done and is appreciated. I wish you well.

Do you have the name or link of that specific bleeding kit?
Great video, btw!
Yes. it was in the descriptoin and the pinned comment. Universal Bleed Kit: amzn.to/3zpQhuH
Star Key set used for brake Lever: amzn.to/3QVBP3V
Did you do the full hydraulic replacement video?
No, because my brakes have been perfect since making this video.
Nice, helpful video Scott. Was the fluid really dirty or just a darker color? How does brake fluid get dirty in an almost new bike?
Great question. The fluid that was put in the brake lines could have been a darker color that the bike shop used when they did it. I hadn’t thought about that. I’m not a bike pro by any means but that makes more sense than the fluid being bad after only 800 miles.
Worked perfect and thank you
Glad it worked!
Cool info, thanks Scott!
I hope it helps!
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Scott, Had any flat tires? Video?
Over 1100 miles, zero flat tires. I put FlatOut (ATV version) in my tires and I ride worry free!
Where did you get the odd shaped hex tool to remove the bleed cap?
It’s a star head. Any local hardware store.
@@scotthardesty T15?
@@Letsgo77761 oh man. I’m not sure. I had a set and just kept trying until one fit. My apologies.
Thanks! I’m sure this will come in handy at some point. How many miles on your bike when you started to notice the brake issues?
Probably 300 miles. I’ve done this lever bleed a couple times since.
Mine started at about 100miles, but I've got big hills all around, so must apply more break on down hill.
I’m getting close to 200 miles, and I’m in the Sierra, so every ride has hills and hard braking. So far so good, but keeping a close watch on how the brakes feel.
@@michaelmay9958 Fingers crossed!
New subscriber. Is there a link or specific brand name for that particular bleed kit on Amazon? Thanks!
Sure do. I had it posted in the description and as a pinned comment. Here you go. Universal Bleed Kit: amzn.to/3zpQhuH
Excellent video! I just did the job in 20 minutes and didn’t spill a drop…in the driveway with the porch light on. The star key came with the kit you linked…an allen wrench style with two stars…the big one fit. You made this easy.
@@glfcvrfan oh crap! I guess I better check the kit better!
Scott, you need to put one of the very small o-rings on the small end of the adapter before you lock it into the cup. Also, the lever needs to be loosened and leveled with the ground. Check out "Syd fixes bikes", she has one of the best videos on this topic.
I appreciate the input. Although, the technique I used worked and has also helped many people fix this issue as well. Thanks for watching!
Wait so you don't need to do the part with the syringe on the brake caliper???
Not for this part.
@@scotthardestyoh ok that makes things easier my front brakes are completely soft and make a air noise when you squeeze them so I plan on bleeding them to see if that works
@@baliboi_santa4162 Let me know if it works!
It worked Thanks!
So glad it helped!
Good video. Thanks.
I hope it helps!
Link please to the star key and or size
This will get it done for you. amzn.to/3QVBP3V
Kit is nice but no fitting to bleed rear brake
You sure about that? As far as I can tell, it had everything needed for a full brake bleed. Since I have only had to do the lever bleed on these brakes, I have not had to do a full bleed.
@@scotthardesty , thanks but the fitting at the rear is smaller, I ordered a Zoom kit, I’ll see how it works. Your video is actually very well done and is appreciated. I wish you well.
@@klemmazurowski9780 Ah. Good to know. Thanks for the info!
Great video thank you!
Thank you. I hope it helps!
@@scotthardesty it definitely will my brother much respect
that was so helpful!
So glad it helped!
I used Marvel mystery oil n a squirt can works so far
Good to hear that is an option as well.
@@scotthardesty Marvel Mystery oil is good stuff . Light oil i think it will work fine for electric bikes w-hydraliic brakes.
good video thanks
Thank you. I hope it helped!
Thanks dude!
Glad I could help!
