Be honest: did you understand this movie thoroughly when you were 7 or 8 years old? I saw my first James Bond films - as it should be - when I was 12 years old - 3 films in short intervals: Octopussy, Never say never again and on TV (on video) Goldfinger. In my opinion Goldfinger was the best James Bond movie and Roger Moore was the best James Bond actor.

This one was pretty amazing: just the space scenes along, involving models and wires, had to be something to film! I think Roger Moore is the best Bond.
R.I.P Roger Moore, Michael Lonsdale, Yaphet Kotto, Richard Kiel, and George Carlin I miss Roger Moore, Michael Lonsdale, Yaphet Kotto, Richard Kiel, and George Carlin so much and I always loved Roger Moore's first four bond films from Live and Let Die to Moonraker. Roger Moore was a brilliant James Bond actor, Moonraker is a very underappreciated and great Roger Moore bond film, and Moonraker was my very first film that got me into James Bond. Moonraker along with Live and Let Die will always be my top 2 all time favorite Roger Moore bond films, Michael Lonsdale as Hugo Drax and Yaphet Kotto as Dr. Kananga are both one of my favorite bond villains, and Yaphet Kotto was a great film actor in Live and Let Die and Alien. I also love both Richard Kiel and George Carlin. Richard Kiel was an awesome bond henchman as Jaws, George Carlin was the best American comedian of all time, and Jammin' in New York from 1992 is my favorite George Carlin special.

méz geri - I've seen Moonraker at least a dozen times and I have to agree. I'd guess that at least 65% of the movie is spoiled and at least 50% of the best parts are spoiled. Fortunately, Roger Moore's acting and one-liners still make it worth watching over and over again.

[He closes the door and ejects Drax into space] Dr. Holly Goodhead: [rejoining 007] Where's Drax? James Bond: Oh, he had to fly.
This movie is the best example of a guilty pleasure! so many silly moments but it's still very enjoyable and Moore was the epitome of charm and cool. I'll take Moonraker any day over a pretentious Bond film like Quantum of Solace.
This was Bernard Lee's final outing as M. Lee was scheduled to reprise his role in For Your Eyes Only, but was admitted to hospital in November 1980, diagnosed with stomach cancer. He died in January 1981 before any of M's scenes could be filmed.
This may have been a downgrade from THE SPY LOVED ME but Drax was a step up. He was the aristocrat's aristocrat who was more concerned about Bond's death being amusing rather than practical.
Really. I thought Hugo Drax was the most sedate, boring and nondescript Bond villain of all time. Esp. compared to the likes of Dr. No, Goldfinger, BloFeld, Scaramanga, and even that weird looking guy from Casino Royale.
don4321 Let's put it this way, Lonsdale as Drax was memorable and not the Drax character. He also had some of the best dialogue since Auric Goldfinger. And FYI, the "weird looking guy" from Casino Royale was Le Chiffre.
@Ricardo - I disagree. I consider Hugo Drax the most bland and uncharismatic Bond villain up to that time--I couldn't even quote one of his quips. I've seen Goldfinger, I know Goldfinger, and you, Mr. Drax, are no Goldfinger... Even the ill-advised Diamonds Are Forever had the great Charles Gray in the role of Blofeld (apparently reincarnated from You Only Live Twice). If Hugo Drax's character were a color, he'd be a dull shade of taupe... There's no way Lonsdale is an "upgrade" to Curt Jugens in Spy. Its all opinions of course, but I believe this is the prevailing thought.
@Ricardo Ok, neither guy was particularly exciting, but I like Jurgens as an actor more--maybe its the Germanic thing that makes him a better heavy (ala The Enemy Below). Plus, in Spy, you also had the Jaws character taking even more of the villain role, and then there was Barbara Bach as a constant threat ready to plug Bond for revenge at any time. So Jurgens had a supporting cast of baddies, which enhanced the overall effect. Drax only had Jaws Part 2, which while barely believable one time, became pretty ridiculous in a comeback role, esp after he fell in love and became a good guy--the kiss of death for any respectable thriller.
Sir Roger Moore is my favourite Bond (Sorry Daniel Craig)..I saw Roger Moore as James Bond since I was 15 years old, "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1975)...after that I always saw Roger Moore as James Bond in "The Spy Who Loved Me", "Moonraker", "For Your Eyes Only", "Octopussy", "A View to a Kill"..after Roger Moore retired I think Pierce Brosnan is similar act of Roger Moore's Bond,..I saw Roger Moore on television series " The Persuaders" and "The Saint"..
Same here. Man with the golden gun was the first Bond I saw in a cinema, and ever since then I've considered Moore to be the legitimate Bond. Here's a fact you'd be interested in: when Broccoli and Saltzman were first casting for Bond, they wanted Moore, but he wasn't available as he was doing television (the Saint I believe). So they got Connery instead. So Moore was the first designated Bond.
Originally, they planned that _For your eyes only_ would have been the film next to _The spy who loved me_, but then the success of _Close Encounters of the Third Kind_ and _Star Wars_ made Broccoli to change the plans, and they filmed _Moonraker_. Now, I've never read the novel version of _Moonraker_, but I've heard, that it's nothing like this film version...
Yes, it's nothing like the book at all. In the novel, Drax was a Nazi the guise of a respected Englishman who planned on launching a missle straight into the heart of the London. As a matter of fact, Drax and the finale of the novel was later used as the basis of GOLDENEYE right down to Trevelyan inheriting Drax's scars.
Dr. Goodhead: Come on, Mr. Bond. A seventy year old can take 3 G's. Bond: Well, the trouble is, there's never a seventy year old around when you need one"
You know I always thought this one was poor till I watched it at the cinema tonight, was very enjoyable, entertaining and funny I just went with it and enjoyed the ride , roger was on good form as always
a lot of people are slagging this movie off because it was in space You Only Live Twice at the beginning was set in space so. there's nothing wrong with this film its brilliant
The fact that Jaws becomes a good guy after falling in love with some pig-tailed twinkie--that one teeny 'lil plot point is enough to sink this one all by itself. And that's discounting the 20 other lame/ridiculous/cringe-worthy aspects about it, the space scenes taking numerous slots on that list...
It's not that it is set in space, it is just a bloody atrocious film. Simple as that. They had a great novel at their fingertips and wasted it in favour of some Thunderball remake meets Carry On Mooning.
I agree Beck. People just hear Bond in space and dismiss it, or they just go along with some dumb critic. But those who bother to watch the film and have the sense to form their own opinion can see it's a brilliant movie, and really well made.

Alien was the exception. Most trailers back then showed you the whole movie, most notoriously, Danger: Diabolik actually gives away the whole ending with the narrator actually announcing "it's the gold-plated end!"
Best Bond no matter how old..he had his style..truly natural...really miss him.We move on...Not interested in any future bond films..will live with the old ones.
Me too. I refuse to watch any Bond films except the ones with Moore as Bond. Perhaps I'll tolerate Connery as an exception as he was first. But Moore is the Elvis of the franchise: he took Bond to superstardom.
The physics in this movie is totally hilarious. They spin the space station to get artificial gravity, but then they walk around at 90 degrees inclination to the "gravity"! Yet, they had a NASA guy as technical advisor...
I just realized that this movie as more over the top than needed. Still entertaining but the laser guns were so unneeded, but everyone wanted to compete with Star Wars. When watching this I feel like I am looking at the black hole. The worst part of one of the more beautiful shots was the usage of jaws. Jaws should have been left out of this. The stupid biting of the cables and his jump from one cable car to the other was when I realized nobody told Broccoli no.
Moonraker and Die Another Day are truly the Fast and The Furious of James Bond films. They are dumb and over the top but if you just accept that fact and relax they are actually very fun.

+David Topchiev
Yes, or they overruled the poor NASA guy...
I can imagine the meeting with that NASA advisor and Lewis Gilbert. Glibert nodding politely whilst thinking "Christ, who hired this guy?".
Maybe he screwed with them on poor because he knew most normal people couldn't tell the difference.
Back in the days when the trailers would have more narration than the films themselves.
MAGNIIFICO
until recently i thought roger Moore and Iain Glen were the same person 😂😂😂
Thank you Richard Kiel
I just realized that this movie as more over the top than needed. Still entertaining but the laser guns were so unneeded, but everyone wanted to compete with Star Wars. When watching this I feel like I am looking at the black hole. The worst part of one of the more beautiful shots was the usage of jaws. Jaws should have been left out of this. The stupid biting of the cables and his jump from one cable car to the other was when I realized nobody told Broccoli no.
See that some harm comes to Mr Bond. Love it.
Been to see him back in action on the big screen VUE cinema's currently showing every bond in order at weekends. Such much better on big screen 😉
There’s a moment in the movie this trailer didn’t reveal
Yes, Holly's surname. 😄
Jaws falls in love
James Bond meets Star Trek
this one was awesome
RIP....
Moonraker and Die Another Day are truly the Fast and The Furious of James Bond films. They are dumb and over the top but if you just accept that fact and relax they are actually very fun.
