I had the pleasure of seeing this fine woman and her band on Easter Monday 2019 at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill. (England) there was something about the atmosphere, the mix between the band and the audience that combined to make it one of life's unforgettable moments. One of the best concerts I've ever attended. I was particularly struck by the added depth to her music that came via the addition of the Southern Fried String Quartet. This particular track has always intrigued me because to my mind, Barry Walsh has always been one of the most underrated keyboard players on the circuit. Did anyone else pick up on the nod to Cher's " Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" that he sneaks in effortlessly on this track? An understated genius in my mind and a perfect match for Gretchen.
I've seen her about 5 times in England round the Midlands and once in London and the experience is repeated. A very special artist. And like the clever ones she gets great relationships with other musicians.
Late to the Gretchen party and trying mightily to catch us. Just saw her do this one and others at Nashville's City Winery! Powerful stuff from a powerful singer-songwriter. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent!
Have been listening to a lot of Gretch just recently, her songs are exquisite, songwriting at its very very best and she tells such sad truths about life so well that it takes the pain away.
Heard the interview with Bob Harris on BBC radio 2 last night. This morning heard the whole song again on radio 2. I can't believe I can love a song again as much as I love this. Can't wait to see Gretchen in March in Glasgow.
Im posting this with tears in my eyes on this early 5am morning. I love this song and am relating to every word! This is a Beautiful song with Music that touches Deep with-in! Thank You for the Song! Doing an amazing job Gretchen! Michelle in Azle, Tx
Boy Gretchen Peters - The awesome singing/guitarplaying skills = Robert Zimmerman :-) Both are extraordinary composers. Respect to Bob for his durability. Good grooves, Pete
Wow! This is such a great song. As a fellow songwriter may I invite you to listen to elevator on soundcloud slash /jonnygavin I love your voice and watching you get into the groove with your song. Best song Ive come across in at least 3 years. Will download your album. Interested in hearing more of these lyrics....
Hi Gretchen. Did you play all the other instruments on this track too? - I don't see any credits for all the musicians that took this from a little strummy ditty to a full blown song. Full credit to you if you did it all yourself - - shame on you if you ignored the other artists who made this sound good for you!!!!!!!
Thought, how could your song writing get any better? Heard this , nodded and smiled, really!

HELLO CRUEL WORLD - LYRICS, by Gretchen Peters
Haven’t done as well as I thought I would
I’m not dead but I’m damaged goods
And it’s gettin’ late
I’m a rusty hinge, a squeaky wheel
at the bad end of a shaky deal
cursed by the hand of fate
and ooooooh - I’m a very lucky girl
yeah ooooooh - hello cruel world
I’m a ticking clock, a losing bet
a girl without a safety net
I’m a cause for some concern
You don’t live this long without regrets
Telephone calls you don’t wanna get
Stones you’d rather leave unturned
but ooooooh - the grain of sand becomes the pearl
yeah ooooooh - hello cruel world
some folks go the easy route
numb the pain or put the lights out
either way they got to go
me I’m gonna stick around
in for a penny in for a pound
cause I hate to miss the show
and ooooooh - I’m a very stubborn girl
yeah ooooooh - hello cruel world
hello cruel world

Thanks for posting the lyrics. :-)
Это хорошо...
It looks like her capo is on the third fret; what chords are those she's playing? Hard to see . . .
@insulartoxic7 That's the first thing i thought
A beautiful song writer. A beautiful person. Just ask her Labrador Retriever. You can't fool a Lab.
Legally I hope.
I’m a cause for some concern.

Ed Sheeran falling
This reminds me of Sheryl Crow - Tomorrow never dies, in some parts!
