I work at a restaurant/concert hall in small town Sparta, NC. Gretchen played there today and her voice made me cry, it was so beautiful. I think I found a new favorite artist.
Me too Iwas there at Cadogan Hall in London last night for the final show of the farewell tear. I cried my eyes out it is such a beautiful emotional song. Thank you Gretchen, I was there at the start at the Borderline in London.
What a great performance - You had my mind traveling back to a time in my life that molded me into what I am today. Your songs are so heartfelt Gretchen. I will listen to you forever.......
Every time I listen to this song I get chills up my spine and get teary eyed. An outstanding masterpiece. A simple snip it of life that is not so simple. Beautiful and painful Life is good!
Sublime song Gretchen. When I booked Rodney for a gig here in Ireland he said that he was going to minister at your wedding back home.i loved that and I love Rodney. I wish he could minister at our daughters wedding in LA at Christmas time soon. Much love from Ireland.
Perfect example of GREAT storytelling! It's an entire movie AND it's five minutes long! Her cigarette just finished burning out & she must now get back to the luncheonette! Bubba needs a refill on his coffee. Gretchen painted a masterpiece as good as any Van Gogh.
Went to see Eliza Gilkyson last year - the show was called Three Women and the Truth, and she performed with Mary Gauthier and Gretchen Peters. I had never heard of Mary or Gretchen but both sang songs that were like a lightning bolt to my soul - this was Gretchen's. I listened in amazement - and then wished I could know more about this woman in the song. Such great songwriters - all three! Listen to Mary's "Mercy Now" for another great song.
I've seen Gretchen & Barry several times, her songs are masterpieces and only she can sing them with the emotion they deserve. My first time was booked "because she wrote Independence Day" and I'm so glad I booked those tickets. Glad you also enjoy and appreciate good music.
I went to a local performance of that series in 2015, knowing (mostly) Mary Gauthier - who as you noted, is great - but very little about Gretchen or Eliza. From hazy memory, somewhere in the midst of the interleaving of songs between all three of these stellar singer/songwriters, Gretchen sang "The Cure For The Pain" and I was hooked. She followed that up with "Five Minutes" and "The Matador." Was absolutely floored by their powerful poignancy.
Sometimes two words will be enough to tell you what I think of the singer, the song, and the lyrics. So here are my two words ... "Painfully Beautiful."
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
I've seen Gretchen live four times - twice with her own band, and twice with Suzy Bogguss & Matraca Berg, and she's always been fantastic. This is such an incredible song, the way it tells the story within a framing device. It's up there with Mary Chapin Carpenter's song This Shirt in that regard.
Beautiful, heartfelt song. Very sad , leaves me feeling a little depressed but it's stunning and i've saved it to my favs to listen to many more times. Luv to u Leð 🥺💙💙♌♌
Hi Gretchen Just when I think it can't get much better someone comes along to impress the heck out of me. In "Five Minutes" you've done that. All the best. Bill
I saw her performance at Hugh’s Room in Toronto on April 2012. My gosh!! I have to confess I had no idea of her before. I got so impressed that I ran out and bought all her music. Sort of witch who transformed me in a fan immediately from the very first song. This song in particular is adult music for adult people.
Hehe, I went to a performance of her with my father. I think the average age was 50-55.. (I am 20) But her music is great, it's a pity most young people aren't interested in this kind of music. Along with idlewild this is one of my favourites.
Thijmen Schaap I am a member of AARP, and would like to say that it is good to know that a member of the younger generation also appreciates Gretchen Peters. (And I agree w/ you about Idlewild; great song as well.) 03/07/2015
I saw Gretchen at the Songwriters Festival on 30a in Florida 2014...OMG, the impression left upon me was monumental. Her voice, both inner and outer, entered me and created moisture in my eyes and a softness in my heart. This song, Five Minutes, was delivered in such a heart felt, genuine and poetic way, I felt compelled to return home and play my guitar and sing out my emotions as well. What a brilliant masterpiece. The song, it's delivery and the songwriter herself. Thank you!
Dude. You said it. Just today have I "heard" her music and I am compelled to listen more. "To Say Goodbye" has me almost in spiritual tears. Beautiful.
I seen her play in Derry in Ireland my home town and sat transfixed the whole show. Struck gold by actually being able to sit talk to her about music when she was signing my T shirt & CD. Amazing lady. So kind and generous with everyone there
Then, you invested more than most in the area can, and nevermind entering into the venue with an original artistic segment to be scheduled for that very short calendar: the women down there don’t much care What genre, or medium, ( they do front the trappings of hippie 70’s through 80’s paraphernalia) just that you pay the piper before you walk out to greet their audiences
I think this is one of the greatest story songs ever written and this is an even better performance than the one on the album. You know so much about this woman and her life in a few lines. I have spent hours thinking about the bits of the story that are implied..... Is her daughter from the man in the song? Don't think so. Has she slept with her boss,Andy?....Yes but she regrets it like so much else. Will she ever get together with the man in the song?.....only in the Hollywood version and so on....All from five minutes I love that the song last 5 minutes too.
+Andy Parsons I think her daughter is from the man in the song (almost twenty years = 18) and she got pregnant from him while being under age. She also shut and locked that door, because he clearly never has been a father. And the history repeats itself, because her daughter is now pregnant too. "I gave her hell when she came home this afternoon Mascara runnin' down her face" I interpreted as if she already was crying when she came home. :) Anyways it's a really nice song.
Hi Gretchen - was at a wonderful gig with your friend Ben Glover last night. Ben is from my home village here in Ireland and he is a wonderful song writer and singer. This song is so personal and special to me - it kinda sums up my life and it means a lot to me - keep up the good work.

So many of the songs Gretchen Peters writes just tear my heart out. Truly a great talent.
I never have understood why Gretchen Peters hasn't become more well-known. She's always been an intense talent, a true diamond in the rough.
Oh, how the memories can warm the heart --- or burn with regret. This song evokes each and I am in tears.
Me too Iwas there at Cadogan Hall in London last night for the final show of the farewell tear. I cried my eyes out it is such a beautiful emotional song. Thank you Gretchen, I was there at the start at the Borderline in London.
I was amazed to see Gretchen at Lytham in NW England. How lucky to have this totally amazing singer / writer on my doorstep. Her songs bring a tear. N
A song about smoking a cigarette and the thoughts you have... This is a masterpiece.
Fell in love with this song at the concert.
Gretchen ❤ your voice takes me to a place I can’t go on my own anymore. Thank you for accompanying me and bringing me back home again. ❤
This is a complete masterpiece of music and lyrics. An entire song about a 5 minute smoke break... deep, reflective and just perfection.
Great artist 😊
Hauntingly, beautiful song from one of the best songwriters around.
Really, REALLY sweet song. What a gift for lyrics Gretchen Peters has!!!
A little bit of all of us. So great, thank you Gretchen Peters!
I keep hitting replay. I just turn off all the other noise in the house and just listen.
Thank you.
Sublime song Gretchen.

Gretchen Peters has worked a lot with Bryan Adams, btw.
I've seen Gretchen & Barry several times, her songs are masterpieces and only she can sing them with the emotion they deserve. My first time was booked "because she wrote Independence Day" and I'm so glad I booked those tickets. Glad you also enjoy and appreciate good music.

all I can say is WOW!!!
Perhaps one of the finest songs of the human condition ever written. Bravo
Reminds me of my younger days. One of my favorites, Gretchen.
Damn, that's real music for adults that are alive in a real life. Good stuff.
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a method to log back into an Instagram account..?

@Callum Lian Instablaster ;)
Beautiful, sad, haunting, profound. An understated masterpiece of a five minute (5:04) slice of life. Thanks for this treasure!
Amazon Prime recommended her. What an amazing find!
A truthful song about cercumstances out of your controle. Hart brake and real life for too many people. Thank you.
I hope the greater wide world will know of which you sing with such raw emotion.
So, so deep and touching! Bless you, Gretchen.
Good grief! Gretchen can write and sing big-time! "Five Minutes" will rip a big hole in your heart. Thanks for Nashville City Winery on 6.4.17.
Beautiful, heartfelt song. Very sad , leaves me feeling a little depressed but it's stunning and i've saved it to my favs to listen to many more times. Luv to u Leð 🥺💙💙♌♌
An absolute gem. Total perfection! Thank you, Gretchen & Barry.
Beautiful and so heart touching.
Beautiful song, beautifully sung, by a beautiful lady.
Love, love, love this tune...thanks Gretchen and thanks Music Fog!!!
Beautiful song crafted perfectly and sung and played exquisitely I’m now a fan , if this is country I won’t avoid it like I used to
After two years later ..(see comment below) , this song still breaks my heart. Brilliant !
What an exceptional piece of work. The story of a life in "five minutes".
been a fan for 25 years, I even got to talk to her at the bluebird once. amazing what happens when inspiration meets the prepared intellect.
Proof that there is talent around, if you look hard enough, got my tickets.
Beautiful ballad.
Just seen Gretchen sing this on a BBC Red Button replay of a house concert at Beth Nielsen Chapman's house. What a beautiful song.
Well crafted, well sung and brought from the heart. I'm in love again.........Why can't more artists touch us this way ?
Beautiful song, and Gretchen is playing In Cork, Ireland next week October 16th.I can't wait!!.
I just found this amazing musician and this song is so amazing !! LOVE HER
Hi Gretchen

Adult music for adult people, as I said!

I love this song Gretchens one of the best
It is a beautiful song and Gretchen Peters is singing it beautifully too. Thank you. I love her voice. And the video is perfect to this song
Thank you very much for this great song! Can`t wait to see you in the Ampere in Munich!
Again, this water in my eyes.
As usual, an absolute perfection: words+music+emotion... What could we ask more?

I live right across the street and I play on 30A, I know.
Very little engenders the aspect of kiln house 70’s beginnings
This is my favorite song by her! I love this song so much. Maybe that's because i love to sing songs about my emotions.
Such a well written / performed song, love it ! Theres a lot of life on here. Thanks for posting !!!
A gem from the mine.......thank you again Gretchen x
Hi Gretchen....this is one of my favorite songs you sing. Probably because I can relate to it. You sing it beautifully. Hope you're doing well. Maeve
Gretchen her guitar and a piano, PERFECT!

What a beautiful song.

"I gave her hell when she came home this afternoon
Mascara runnin' down her face"
I interpreted as if she already was crying when she came home.
:)
Anyways it's a really nice song.
I think that the man she sings of died, probably in a car accident. She was pregnant. She's never forgotten, or moved on. She's never slept with Andy.
Indeed. Out in front as you say
This Lady is fantastic!!!!
wow, yeah, I'm a fan too, anyone who can dredge up memories like you just did, you've got it in spades! Thanks!
Watch this constantly. So so good!
A year ago I labelled this a beautiful song, beautifully sung, by a beautiful lady - I am of the same opinion still - I love it.
What a great heart break ballad!
This song connects on so many levels. Emotionally powerful, true to life, a truly wonderful song.
Sister of music, you blow my mind and fill my heart with every song. This one got my eyes too. Thank you.
This is really a beautiful song.
Beautiful
Love this lady.
Hi Gretchen - was at a wonderful gig with your friend Ben Glover last night. Ben is from my home village here in Ireland and he is a wonderful song writer and singer. This song is so personal and special to me - it kinda sums up my life and it means a lot to me - keep up the good work.
