I think most people are on board with a general sense of equality. It just gets exhausting when a social agenda is clumsily shoehorned into every form of media. Alien and Terminator are evidence that movies with a strong female lead can do really well. They were successful movies across the board, especially financially. So that's not even an issue of "changing society" because those examples are already 40 years old. People just want interesting stories and well developed characters without the ham-fisted moralizing. It's obviously not because the "fragile male ego" of the audience won't embrace them.

Tomb Raider's Lara Croft was supposed to be a female Indiana Jones. Well I loved Tomb Raider games growing up and have never seen an Indiana Jones movie and don't want to either. Some female characters are cool for sure. Katana is one of my favorite Mortal Kombat characters. But they were hot too, not short haired lesbians or purple haired.

Look up Torches of Freedom. Marketing from the get go was about using consumerism as a replacement for culture.
