The field at SE Union & Fountain seems like a good redevelopment site but consider that not every station has to be densely built to be useful to riders. Providing access to “green space” or undeveloped, naturalized (in this case) space is also a value add for riders who can’t get there or other outdoor spaces easily.
That land at Fountain & Union is currently just an abandoned field that nobody goes to but I definitely agree that some stations on any given line should have at least some nearby park space.
A consideration and the only way this ever becomes a thing in COS is figure out where it would allow transfer to the future Front Range Passenger Rail would happen. Without that transfer COS will never do this, the city is uber conservative and actively opposed to transit unless forced. This plan also leaves out the entire west side of COS.
The Front Range Passenger Rail will likely have a stop at Old Depot Square, just a block away from Downtown Central Station. I have no idea where else that regional line would stop, as basically anywhere else would make it useless. While more conservative than Denver, Colorado Springs is growing more support for transit, and I think a line like this could be built in the future.
If Elon Musk's Boring Company truly is superior in tunnelling technology to existing TBM's than a short section like this should be a breeze even if the size of the tunnel was only slightly larger to make room for overhead power systems and the like... I know that's a big if, but the company if its actually real could really clean up doing small sections like this if they promise to build it as quick as they claim they can...
The Shooks Run Trail would be perfect for a local commuter rail line.
