    I like the HD collections as they are released on modern consoles. They even added some features that weren't in the original, but it doesn't detract from the experience. Which is honestly what i ask, since I would like to play how they released it. If I wanted all the QoL, I would play Untold

      My opinion on the QoL features is that they should just add all of them and make them optional. Even if the game is balanced for no floor skips, no redos, no nothing, it's still likely to beat up on newcomers to old school dungeon crawlers with all assists on.

      @@SnakebitSTI That's what makes it great. It's hard in the beginning but it levels as you gain more levels and unlocking moves. And tbh, you can make any build and progress the game relatively difficult.
      Except in EO2. Where I unlocked the Ronin's ultimate weapon early and six slashed the boss to death. On both phases.

    On $80 being a rip-off....
    I just finished EO2HD to the 5th stratum. Took just under 50hours. I've decided to take another stab at it with a new part for the post-game, so restarting, guessing I'll breeze through it this time and get there in 30 hours. Then the post game should take at least 30 hours. That's 80-110 hours with this game alone. I will play III, as it's one of the best in the series, so let's say 80 hours more there. Then let's say I dabble with the first one, don't finish but goof around for another 20 hours. That's over 200 hours of play time. How is that not worth $80? Very few games, even the big $60 AAA games, I almost never get 100+ hours. I'm getting at least double that here. Price per hour, it's not bad at all.

    • @millasgameroom
      @millasgameroom  Год назад +7

      I can see where you're coming from, as value is subjective.
      For me, the Japanese / Asian releases being cheaper than the western digital release (even with the bundle) is the major deciding factor. I'd say it's worth importing the Southeast Asian physical copy (which cost closer to 80 on top of shipping iirc) because it's physical and was being sold for less than in the west. I'd rather spend extra on shipping and customs than pay extra to a publisher overcharging for an inferior digital release, although i see why people won't want to do that.
      20 USD each (with a 40-50USD bundle) would've been much more reasonable for the digital only Western release, however ATLUS are charging us more for less. That's why it's too expensive. They're not the only company doing it either.
      Either way, there will be sales on this pack in the future so people will be able to get them for cheap in time :)

      "rip off" might be a bit strong, but even as a super-fan of the entire series I was raising my eyebrows at $40/game (or "only" $27 each if you buy all 3 at once) for some up-res'd assets and some (but not all) of the QoL features found in EO3/4/Untold.
      I paid it, of course (superfan stupidity, ho!), but as a newcomer it's a bit of a tall ask. It's like they knew that the people most interested in the collection would be willing to pay the "support Atlus/more EO games in the future" tax, but if you're new to dungeon crawlers and don't know if you'll like them, $40/$80 dollars for decade-old DS game(s) with slightly prettier visuals is a tough sell.

    Now.... I'd say the best place to start the series depends on a few things...
    You start with EO1 (either DS or Switch/PC) to get the most core version of Etrian Odyssey.
    You go for Untold 1 or 2 if you prefer a proper story.
    You go for EO5 if you want the most convenience.
    But I would recommend EO3 if you want the best that Etrian Odyssey has to offer.

      I wouldn't really call the messy stories in Untold 1/2 "proper". I don't really understand why people need a story in all their games even they totally suck. The more minimal framing stories in EO1/2 were much better written/executed/

  • @patron7906
    @patron7906 Год назад +8

    Watching the video, I disagree on floor jumping. Yes, it makes the game easier and quicker but you have Ariadne threads already to leave and plenty of geo spots and can start in any stratum you've cleared. Some of the difficulty is the journey and floor jump bypasses that entirely.

    • @millasgameroom
      @millasgameroom  Год назад +3

      Floor jumping is an accessibility feature, hence why i believe it should be an option. It's entirely optional in games where it's a thing, and that is what's important.
      And thank you for your comments! I appreciate the perspectives and discussion :)

    • @Darkkfated
      @Darkkfated Год назад +6

      @@millasgameroom Floor Jumping was an experiment they tried in the Untold games (where it was broken to hell and back) and finally more-or-less got right by the time 5 and Nexus rolled around. On paper, the idea is great - less time spent backtracking to previously cleared floors is good, right? - but in practice it broke the game balance in half (again, in the Untold remakes specifically) by invalidating half the FOE puzzles, rendering most of the Exploration skills irrelevant, and obsolete-ing Ariadne Threads the vast majority of the time.
      Since this team apparently decided that any QoL feature found after EO4 was "too new" for the HD original trilogy, that means there's at least 2 reasons (one understandable, one not so much) why it was left out of the HD Collection.

    There's actually something I must mention about emulating the originals... The graphics and mapping DO NOT translate well. You might think that the using a mouse with an emulated version is the same as with the PC version of the HD remake, but it's not. The HD version is much smoother to work with and the larger screen makes it easier to use your mouse. And that is on top of the fact your mouse doubles as control in all other menus too.
    So yes, you can emulate them, but that was exactly why I was worried whether the PC port would actually work well.

    I didn't like Untold 1 at all, and skipped Untold 2 because I didn't like vanilla 2, but seeing the changes in Untold 2, I might have actually liked that. So frankly I'd say the PC version of these remasters is the definitive version for 1 and 3. Untold 1's gameplay changes are too vast and mostly make the game worse, with no way to turn them off, so that ruins the fun of the original. And the remaster of 3 is the same game, but prettier and with a lot of accessibility features.
    The remaster of 2 definitely feels like an improvement over the original, but it doesn't change what I dislike about the game (nor should it, if it's going to be faithful to the original like the others are) so I wouldn't say "don't bother with 2," especially when you can get the whole trilogy for the same price as buying 1 and 3. But all told, this remaster collection is the best way to jump in if you get it on PC. I play them using a controller for all the movement stuff, and my mouse to do the mapping, and I genuinely prefer it to the mapping on the DS originals.
