Fun isn't something one considers when trying to beat a boss on etrian odyssey games with what would be a support character but this does put a smile on my face. Instant like because it is an etrian odyssey game. While I do unstand that this series is locked on DS and 3ds, this series was practically made for those systems since it uses most of the functions from them especially the dual screen.
@@lpfan4491nah the PC versions actually feel really good with keyboard and mouse, it’s not exactly the same as the touch screen, but it’s a very close second.
Probably goes back to TTRPGs, where they had to find some way to get people interested in playing the healer. Even then, people still sleep on classes like the Cleric in D&D

Ness from Earthbound and Lucas from Mother 3). Also someone already mentioned clerics from DnD, they have an insane potential for damage as a war cleric among other things.
They added a funny fanservice bikini armor to their game, only for it function best on the literal bear. As an SMT/Persona fan that hasn't seen Etrian Odyssey before, glad to see that Atlus is still Atlus even when they're making a more typical fantasy JRPG.
@@Jogernog Of course it used to be, but that was in the 80s. There are very few developers or anime directors today that remember fondly of a literally 40 year old game and take inspiration from it. Etrian Odyssey just happens to be a more palatable introduction into what the Japanese populace has found to be more appealing to their ideal asthetic. You're quite likely to find more Japanese people who played the DS as a kid and know about Etrian Odyssey than those who know about Wizardry that have probably literally died off.

You say Wiz is a 40 year old game, but really it's been a series since 85', never mind the fact that the series was acquired by a Japanese company and had games on all sorts of hardware, including the Gameboy and Super Famicom. Plus, you say it like old games haven't influenced modern media, but FF and DQ are as old as Wizardry and Ultima, and they're still highly influential, never mind the fact that Wiz was also so popular in Japan that a Japanese company acquired it and created a whole list of Japan only Spin-offs, which later became the main series when the franchise died in the west... To finish off, I think most anime directors and manga authors are likely to have been born in the late 80's to early nineties and be around their forties/thirties, statistically speaking, it makes sense that they would know of the old school dungeon crawling games... Hell I bet you can find traces of Ultima DNA in stuff like dungeon Meshi (who btw used the exact same resurrection system and premise as the first Wizardry game, down to the literal mad wizard.) @@Jogernog ngl I live in Japan, and the main influence is certainly neither of these. It's almost Always another anime that came before that inspired another. For instance, the sudden surge of "I'm in a VR game world" anime after Sword Art Online released. Obviously .hack// came much earlier than Sword Art, but to say it was the driving influence due to it's long standing popularity as a series that's continued for decades is reaching and taking away from the context of recency. Not that you were doing that exactly. I'm just stating an example for reference. Basically what I'm saying is that what you're saying sounds kinda like that.
I only know about Etrian Odyssey from osmosis because I played Labyrinth of Touhou. The presentation of this video is so good though that I stayed through its entire duration. I love seeing people nerd out over topics which they have in-depth knowledge! The editing is great too, especially the use of transitions and sfx to draw attention to important skill effects.
This type of thing is why I always loved EO. As long as you know what you’re doing: even some of the more insane party compositions are surprisingly viable. The classes themselves are also quite unique. I’ll have to try this out next time I take a crack at untold 2. EOV holds a special place in my heart for its classes (and race system), and Nexus has the biggest selection alongside multi-classing. (My favorite late-game setup is a Hero+Highlander with the Vampire item).
Highlander+Shogun in Nexus is another fun combo. Chase everyone's attacks with Warrior Might, while proccing your own Bloodlust from Warrior Might's self-damage, self-damage that's immediately healed off by Hero Battle. Just constantly stab everything each turn.
@@bad_ideas289 Oooh! That sounds awesome! Not as much self-sustain as the vamp’ set-up, but much more explosive I imagine. I’ll have to take a crack at that at some point, since I never really explored the shogun class.
Something to note: teeeechnically Protector has better TEC+VIT by few points IIRC. It isn’t worth ruining the immersion in my opinion, but it theoretically would be better if alter class is to be concerned.
I've really enjoyed playing the Persona Q games and the team building aspect of them, and Etrian Odyssey looks to be even more of that! Cool video, you got me interested in trying a new game on my 3DS
I think the common wisdom is to play 3ds era in order of release, 4 5, nexus. Dont worry too much about making a perfrct party, strategy is key. The first boss in 5 is a strategy guide check but dont worry, youll get him next time.
@@kiraangle2823 _That damned golem._ Had to beat it in a war of attrition because I didn’t know you could stop its reinforcements. I wasn’t really ever in danger because of my somewhat…unhinged party composition, but it still took a really long time.
@@TheGhostInThePhoto it completely wiped me the first time, so i almost tried to grind. Boss 2 was such a battle of attrition that i spent every resource i had before victory. Was probs under leveled or under prepared

Yeah, I’d have probably gotten shredded (especially when the golem used Explode) if I wasn’t doing a weird run of the game, resulting in a party composition more useful in battles of attrition than in quick fights. I was just worried I’d run out of TP since I was low on Amritas. Had a pretty easy time with the second boss, though. Came prepared with Amritas and slowly worked away at the boss. The arm binds and attack reductions sucked (Panic would have sucked too if it’d managed to inflict it), but all they really did was delay an inevitable victory. …now, the giraffe F.O.E.s also found on the stratum? Different story. Almost got my party wiped to one, quickly learning to avoid them (any enemy that could prevent a battle of attrition was a weakness for my party).
@@Direblade11 Etrian Odyssey 1-3 are on DS, PC and switch 4-Nexus (nexus is basically a 6th entry that calls back to the other games) are on 3ds The game's don't have much story so you can start wherever you'd like, there's also the 2 Spin offs with the Persona series called Persona Q those are easier but have a lot of text that can often make the early game a slog

Heck yeah Etrian Odyssey content :D I've been doing SCCs of the games for close to a decade now (because my brain is broken) and my first ever was 5 Medics in EO4. Let me tell you, that one was a trip, and I'm super glad I did it. Some of the SCCs I've done over the years have been *Pain* and some of them have been incredibly easy, but all of them have been cool. You can definitely optimize nearly all of them by having just one or even two members of another class, though, as you aptly demonstrated here. (Also for some reason I still haven't finished my 5 Medic EO2U run, really ought to... it's basically just a less optimized Vital Hit team that sometimes explodes on Turn 1, but it's still pretty fun!)

Ever since I've started watching your channel, I've gained a new found appreciation for really digging into a game's mechanics and seeing what they have to offer. I feel like I'm rediscovering some of my favourite srpgs.
This game is one of my all times favorites. And it's absursd strategies is on of the reasons. But it has one big flaw. You can't have a party of just animals, with dialogues being only growls. I really wanted to play sir bearington.
Honestly the series would probably have a lot more ridiculous builds like this if it didnt go out of its way to obscure 90% of the information about the skills you are trying to combine (like which Buffs stack, what the increases are etc.). All of that needs datamining to uncover.
another game that had this was Might and Magic 7. Healers (clerics) could cast Dark Magic school spells that were the highest in terms of damage output. Once I noticed this I rerolled my game with only clerics and 1 sorceror (to complement their utility skills - oh by the way that guy could cast Dark Magic too) and breezed my way through the game. One inconvenience was that I had to tank hits from traps because none of my characters had trap disarming skills. btw dark magic came into play pretty late in the game and before that you just had to rely on damage buffs to the regular weapon of clerics, which made your damage not-great-not-terrible, but since you could heal yourself and clerics had shields and decent armor, it was still a breeze to play through.
This is my favorite thing in RPGs, the busted ass op interactions that can be created using abilities and buffs. Never heard of this game but it looks very fun.
I sincerely hope you make more EO content in the future, these games are horribly underappreciated, plus its just great to see ANYTHING about this in general Edit: maybe we could see an EO Nexus farmer build involving Harvest Moon?

The switch remasters of 1, 2, and 3 are good. Drawing is a tad confusing at first but the experience is still there.

I like when games have situational stacking multipliers on damage, when stacked just right, creates a ridiculous scaling damage burst.
Healing magic can logically do the opposite very effectively.
