    Excellent video - Thank you. Content creators unfortunately bring out the self styled “experts” than always know better. I love the Whilton Marina content. Please keep it coming 😊

    Hi Joseph,
    All the boats that we sell are steel hulled narrowboats. Technically speaking you could create your own hull, but you need to create some RCD (recreational craft directive) documentation upon completion. Contact a marine surveyor. A marine surveyor that has had a vast amount of experience in wooden Hulled Narrowboats would be Trevor Whitling

    This is absolutely hilarious. I can't believe you put this up :-)

    Hi Joseph,
    We're not sure how on many wooden boats are still in service. We haven't had any come up for sale for at least 7 years. As our slipways are generally always full (either with surveys or boats being worked on) we don't have the space for people to do their own work on their boats. There are other marinas that will allow you to work on your boat and they will usually charge you a daily fee.
    Good luck with finding what you are looking for! Thanks for watching our videos!

    If the hull is 5.7 and it's 4mm to insure wy would you over plat when it just needs a good cleane off and a black ? Also I've noticed that a lot of the base plate mid ships is not accessible so the marine serv can not comment on that part.

    Insurance companies don't require this at all! Old springers were often built in 3,3,3 steel, for a broker to say such rubbish... Money grabbing! Insurance companies require 60% thickness if the original thicknesses!

    1)Yes you can if the pitting is not wide spread and it is economical to do the repair by means of a weld.
    2)This depends on what part of the boat needs the replate, cost can be around £150 per foot if a full replate is required.

    Thanks so much for posting this, it makes buying a 2nd user Narrowboat sound even more of a minefield than I thought it was going to be ! The good thing though is that it should leave no one in any doubt that buying a Narrowboat without having a survey carried out is nothing short of total madness. One question if I may, is what happens if a major fault with the hull or engine/drivetrain has been covered up in some way resulting in the surveyor missing it ? I am sure anything like that would be extremely unlikely, but can a surveyor be held responsible ?

    Another nice video, thank you.
    Q1. Can simple pitting problem be welded, than ground down flush than painted...
    Q2. Just a quick estimate, what does a re skin of the side cost on average? And how much weight does it add to the NB?

    So, if you overplate a hull, are you not just ‘covering up’ the problem with new metal?
    How does over plating create a seal between old hull and new metal...surely you end up with a laminated ‘sandwich’ of old/ new steel with the potential to have water in between the two, thus the decay and rot continues unseen. You wouldn’t fit a new car wing over a rusty old one...why do it on a boat?
    You need a lot of heat to weld 6mm steel plate to that mass of a hull...doesn’t all that heat create lots of internal stresses?
    I’m interested, and would like to hear any genuinely knowledgeable answers.
    Thanks for posting the video, it was interesting.

      My base plating was 8 ml 2005 and has been so far OK.
      My boat has been well maintained and monitored.
      Next survey is before August 23 and I hope its not BOAT, bring out another thousand. 😆 😔

    Narrowboats that are rafted a lot run the risk of corroding due to stray current corrosion, even if the electrics on your boat are sound as a pound, stray currents from your neighbours boats can cause your hull to corrode and rapidly too ! general corrosion is not too bad but when you get pitting corrosion, action has to be taken.

    how do they test the all wooden boats? how are they regulated? i am a welder, could i weld my own boat? i can weld under water as well, you know if it were to spring a leak. cool video

    On this boat the bottom was 10mm thick but what about the original thickness of the sides? Thanks

  • @UTubeGlennAR
    @UTubeGlennAR 11 лет назад

    150 per lin foot is not un reasonable for maintaing anything metal that is in water all year long I suppose.
    Thanks for your reply and all your efforts on making the videos... I hope one day to rent a NB from spring till fall and just spend a few months getting lost on the canals of the UK...

    If the sides have to be a minimum of 4mm how thick does the base plate need to be for insurance purposes?

    thanks for the info. we were just wondering how many wooden ones were still out there in service. we wanted to know if your marins does the inspections on them as well, and what you need to look for on them. we wanted to know if we bought one from you or another vender could i do the hull repair welding since i teach welding, and do weld myself. Trevor Whitling is the wooden boat guy, we will google his name and see if we can find him. THANKS AGAIN cool video's cool boats!!

    Hi RJrigges,
    We've been asked a similar question before. We do not carry out many 'wooden hull' hull surveys. We haven't had any for at least the last 7 years. You are best to contact a marine surveyor to ask more about how a survey works on a wooden hull.

    I've yet to purchase a narrowboat and most likely second hand. What is the approx cost for a survey on a 57-foot boat?

    • @WhiltonMarina
      @WhiltonMarina  3 года назад

      Hi Denise, the rough cost for a survey would be between £500 - £800 depending on what area and which surveyor.

    • @thomaspridmore106
      @thomaspridmore106 3 года назад

      That’s put me off £800 do,s that really take a month

    • @WhiltonMarina
      @WhiltonMarina  3 года назад

      @@thomaspridmore106 Hi Thomas, the rough cost of a full survey is between £500-£800 depending on the location of the boat and the surveyors charges, this is a full survey meaning they inspect everything inside & outside the boat, a Hull survey cost is between £300-£500 again depending on the location of the boat & the surveyors cost. Surveys will only take no more than a day to compete.

    Are you seriously plating the entire topsides for the sake of a pit the size of a peanut ?
