Such a magnificent composer, who is sadly often forgotten and neglected.
...with that he shares only the fate of many great composers who rarely make it onto the radio, even more rarely on CD and almost never make it into concert halls...and his legacy is actually doing comparatively well...
The symphony is excellent. The finale is shaking! Wonderful Composer, wonderful performance.
I strongly believe, in a genuinely schenkerian analysis' perspective, that the beauty of the WHOLE Symphony is summed up in ONE NOTE in particular. That wonderfully played note at 25:14 that emerges from the refined texture of the orchestration like the final touch of an artist completing a true Masterpiece of orchestral interpretation. Or am I maybe wrong?
LOL
casella.... CHE MAGNIFICO COMPOSITORE!
Wonderfully over-the-top symphony, played for all its worth, as it should be.
One word to describe this symphony: Epic
A masterpiece second movement. I came here for 14:23 and my goodness that beautiful horn solo.
Is there a horn solo at 14:23???
Great Symphony, Great Orchestra with Great Conductor. 'Frankfurt Radio' amazes me everytime, Thank you
A gorgeous, glorious, dramatic, driven, exotic, exhilarating, powerfully moving symphony. I hadn't heard it recently, and I was once again taken by surprise at its emotional impact, once again bringing me to tears. Noseda's infectious, energetic commitment to this superb work communicated to everyone, and a great musical experience took place.
Che dire, musica potente e sublime e direzione impeccabile. Autore ingiustamente dimenticato!
Bravo Gianandrea Noseda and Frankfurt Radio Symphony for bringing this work to life!
The nearest equivalent of this symphony is the excellent film music of John Williams ... around 100 years later !!!!!
Semplicemente Stupenda ... un grande autore italiano a torto "caduto in un incomprensibile oblio" ... Complimenti, esecuzione e direzione esemplari ...
Sorpreso favorevolmente. Peccato non averlo oggi con noi. Formidabile!!
Wow, stunning music!! A shame how unknown Alfredo Casella is... No performance in Germany until 2013... But many thanks to HR for performing and sharing :D
Noseda jede jako šílený stroj!! :-) Strhující ho sledovat!
Brano magnifico.
Mov.I: Lento grave solenne - Allegro energico - Allegro moderato assai - Lento - Allegro assai vivace - Tempo I (Allegro energico) - Lento - Allegro mosso 00:34

FABULEUX !!!!!FABULOUS !!!!!! PHANTASTISCH !!!!!!!!FANTASTICA !!!!!STRIORDINARIO !!!!!!
Casella’s Masterpiece played beautifully by Noseda and Frankfurt, who truly brought the heart and soul of this work to life with all the love and passion it requires.
Thanks to Bom & Quotenwagnerianer for bringing to my attention the completion dates of Casella and Mahler's symphonies, I had been given misinformation previously.
Anyhow, Casella’s 2nd symphony, IMHO, equaled or in some places even surpassed Mahler in vitality, drive and spirited momentum, not to mention the gorgeous slow movement and the thunderous finale that is on par with Richard Strauss. This work is monumental!
Casella and this Symphony were honored in the novel MY NAZI NEMESIS, an award-winning dark thriller. Thank you, Casella, for this masterpiece, and the inspiration it engendered.
Since Mahler's 2nd was finished in 1894, that means that Casella would have finished this symphony around age 10. Somehow, that sounds unlikely. The date of completion I read most is 1909. That doesn't make it any less impressive, by the way.
The symphony was composed between 1908 and 1909. Therefore he had the numbers 1-7 of the Mahler symphonies to draw from and he had set the 7th for piano four hands by that time.
@@Quotenwagnerianer Theoretically, yes. But music didn't circulate quite as fast then as it does today, and the first editions of scores were prohibitively expensive, even for conservatories. The cheaper editions were the ones sold most, but these would appear later. In practice, I think it's unlikely Casella would have heard anything more recent than Mahler's fifth before beginning work on this symphony in 1908.
The big problem of these high romantic behemoths is generally their lack of momentum, and to me Mahler's works suffer from this more than most.
@@bomcabedal Agreed. I love sections of Mahler’s symphonies but listening from start to finish is a chore. Casella’s 2nd Symphony is different and is an exciting venture all the way through. He may have been influenced by Mahler, but Casella crafted a full-rounded gem here.
What a fantastic symphony!!! Grandiose ending!
Bravissimo ❤
Alfredo Casella (Composer, Arranger) - Italian composer.
Born: July 25, 1883 - Turin, Italy / Died: March 5, 1947 - Rome, Italy
Lento, grave, solenne. Allegro energico - 00:34
Allegro molto vivace. Maggiore, Più allegro. Allegro molto vivace - 14:23
Adagio, quasi andante - 23:23
Finale. Tempo di marcia ben risoluto, con fuoco - 35:22
Epilogo. Adagio mistico. Con tutta l'intensità di espressione possibile - 45:35
This is an awesome work.
Excellent! Tout est bon dans le Casella!
Great work!
outstanding conducting
Veramente interessante. Noseda sempre più bravo.
Bellissimo!
A new and fascinating experience, thanks RUclips.
N
ever heard this work. Great composition !!
Ah, to be a concert organist get to splash out that massive closing chord on 32-foot pipes.... It must be worth the 50-minute wait. At least I hope so for the organist (perhaps he only walks in 5 minutes before the end). A very impressive and awesome symphony, though clearly under the spell of Mahler. The closing pages almost outdo Mahler in grandiosity.
Bellissima sinfonia!!
Great conductor !
amazing!!!!
woowow wonderful wokr of music
Second movement is pure metal.
wowo this is the second time i hear outstanding
Great !
Seems Casella is so little known, that his name wasn't worth to be put into video description ;/ First time to hear his composition - glad I do :)
excelente ¡
45:34 the beginning of the build-up to the climax
The symphony is one of the best, isn't it?
great
Wow.
Please upload in better quality, preferably HD thanks
Gewaltig.Wahnsinn.
Why not in HD? :(
Super!
This performance is better than the BBC Phil/Noseda Symph. 2 on Chandos Records (2009). hr-Sinfonieorchester should offer it on CD high-rez stream.
Seriously, among the best orchestras in the world - the quality of an orchestra isn't dictated merely by its playing, but also by the richness of its repertory.
0:34 begins | 11:49 bell intro |
V, Adagio mistico... weeping beside the waters of Babylon,
❤❤❤❤
The key is C minor.
wish I could see it live
I wish I could have performed it live (3rd oboe/English Horn).
As if I'm listening to Mahler
Traurig.
Quotenwagnerianer -- Ich bin damit einverstanden...True, a rare, exquisite vintage echo of das goldene schwabische Zeitalter!
Spellbinding
Who is the composer? Gianandrea Noseda? Or is he simply the conductor?
Composer is Alfredo Casella

26:22 Upps - da fehlt eine Saite...
Star Wars?
Rigobert Damfee Better.
Be very strange to learn that John Williams never heard this piece.
Erstklassige Aufführung der zweitklassigen Sinfonie.
Aber der 3. Satz, mindestens, und auch die ganze 3. Symphonie!
