Would you know how to separate if the original text is an output of a formula or data feed? Is there a formula for this or would I need to initially split it into separate first name and last name columns?

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a question that I believe many others also have. From a column with the full name of first name 2 or 3 middle names and last name. How could you separate only the first name in one column and the rest of the name in another column? Thanks in advance for your time
Hello, assuming your formatting has a space between first and other names in the cell, you can use the Text to Columns feature to extract the first name into a different column/cell.
1. Select the column that contains the full names and insert a new blank column next to it.
2. Go to the Data tab in the Excel ribbon.
3. Click on Text to Columns in the Data Tools group.
4. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard, select Delimited and click Next.
5. Check the box next to Space and uncheck all other boxes. You should see a preview of how the text will be separated in the Data preview section. Click Next.
6. In the third step of the wizard, you can specify the data format for each column if needed. For this case, you can leave everything as General and click Finish.
You should now have two new columns: one with the first names and another with the rest of the names.
Hope this helps! Thanks for watching my videos!
thank you
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Sharon for this video. I do have a question, whenever I do this instead of having a single space between the first and last name, it always ends up being around 30 spaces between the names. Anyone know why this is happening and how to correct? Thanks.
I'm not sure why that is happening, but if you have a cell formatted with text and too many spaces between first and last name, you can insert a new blank column next to the name column and use the TRIM formula. Click in a cell and type: =TRIM(A2) if A2 were the cell that had the name with too many spaces. TRIM will eliminate all the extra spaces. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
@@SharonSmith THAT WORKED!!! THANK YOU!!!

Thank you, but how do you insert the coma to separate the first and last name?
Add the coma between the two quotes.
Can I create a first last name column from a last first list no comma column?
Very useful
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you🙏

how do you make this a "running" function? you copied and pasted the names, but what if you regularly add names to the list, and want this function to happen as you add the names?
If we have a last name, first name and some initials, middle names or none, how can we convert the names to be first name initial and last name?
To convert a name from "Last Name, First Name [Middle Names/Initials]" into "First Name Initial and Last Name" in Excel, you can use formulas to extract and rearrange the necessary components. Here’s a formula you can try:
=MID(A1,FIND(",",A1)+2,1) & ". " & LEFT(A1,FIND(",",A1)-1)
Output Example:
Input (A1): Doe, John A.
Output (Formula): J. Doe
I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Thanks for watching!!
What if I have a list that has John & Jane Doe or John Doe & Jane Doe. Is there a way to do that?
Can you clarify what you are trying to do? You can create text manipulation functions in Excel to handle this. Are you trying to update John & Jane Doe to "Doe, John & Jane?" or split them out? Thanks for watching!
I copied about 25 names from my word document to Excell. How do I make the row into a column. Transpose is not working. All names are in one cell.
Hello! Thank you for your question! It sounds like when you copied the names from Word into Excel, they all ended up in one cell. To fix this and get the names into individual cells, you can follow these steps:
Text to Columns:
First, select the cell with all the names.
Go to the Data tab, then click on Text to Columns.
Choose Delimited and click Next.
In the next window, select the delimiter that separates the names (such as Space or Comma, depending on how the names are separated in the text).
Click Finish, and Excel will split the names into separate columns.
Transposing to Rows:
Once the names are in separate cells, you can then copy the range of cells.
Right-click where you want the names to go (in rows, for example), and choose Paste Special > Transpose.
I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
@@SharonSmith I'll give it a try. Thanks for the reply
Nice

How do you add the comma after you've switched it over
You'd replace the " " with a , so =(cell)&,&(cell)
You need to also check off the space with the comma when selecting your delimiter, otherwise you end up with a space in front of the name, as she did in this example.
😀
Now there is a space in front of the first name. How do I get rid of that?
Hi Ryan! Select the column in your spreadsheet that has the space+name. On the Home tab, in the Editing area, drop-down "Find & Select" and select "Replace." This opens the Find & Replace pop-up window where you can select the "Replace" tab, and in the field for "Find what:" place your cursor there and hit one space. Leave the "Replace with:" field blank and then click "Replace All." This will remove that space in the column or cell you selected. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
But some persons has a Middle name and also some Last name is Mc Donald how do we address those?
good stuff but you noticed there is a single space before the first name
Thank you so very much!
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
