This game was a big part of my childhood. We had one of the first black and white Macs with this game on floppy disk. Thanks for the video! Trouble 3 was a pain in the @$$ when you're 5 years old.
LoL I was just sharing this with some people. Omg the nostalgia. The hours spent. The deaths I had tallied. Great times. I was 5 as well! I look at it now and man... I would breeze through this now hahaha!
Some serious nostalgia of my high school days… I'm not sure why it was so much into this type of retro games than games of today. Thank you for posting this and putting a smile on my face going back down memory lane.
DC is the ultimate classic. First Mac game I played as youngster. I will never stop loving this game or its sequel. Just wish it was easier to find nowadays to play as the original.
Wow, this is the first time I've seen this since I played it back in '89 - school principal would let us use the Mac in her office to play games at lunchtime. Dark Castle & Shuffle Puck cafe were amazing at the time.
Dude, this was one of the first games I ever played, when I was 4. My hands were so little that I had to use my chin to hit spacebar when I wanted to jump (or throw rock, I don't remember the controls clearly). At the time this was the most impressive game out there!
Desde Venezuela... Es una belleza, jugaba Dark Castle cuando tenía apenas 9 años en una Macintosh plus (512 kb Ram) Los sonidos y las imágenes son fantásticas! Me trasladan en el tiempo...
I had that too, as well as Swamp Witch, Zoony, The Village, Karth of the Jungle, Enchanted Scepters and a lot of other text-and-still-image "World Builder" games. I was a little kid at the time. I would do anything to have these games back, they are a part of my childhood. But they have all vanished. They are lost in time...like tears in the rain. I would be willing to pay a great deal of money to somehow get these games back, if it were possible.
omg ... this brings me back.. thank you so much for posting this.... my families first computer the 80k mac *Enhanced!!* it makes me smile to think of how immersive this felt to me at the time. cheers
Dark Castle and Return to Dark castle are two of the most epic computer games I have ever played, alongside The Fool's Errand, Lode Runner, Shockwave Assault II, and Rollercoaster Tycoon (any edition).
This game was designed for home computers in mind because there were more button layouts to work with compared to home console controllers; which had limited buttons and configurations.
I was so frickin' good at this game. It was the only thing I played for a year, and I LOVED the sequel. It's frustrating to watch this video cause all the shortcuts (he doesn't down-jump off ledges, he pauses between staircases, and he never ducks to avoid the guards)... man, I was all over this. Great to hear the sound effects though. Looks like you found a bug too, where he steps out in mid air before killing the henchman. hmm.
Wow!! This brought back memories from my MAC 512 days!! This, along with Airborne and Ancient Art of War were my favorite games! I used to think the graphics were amazing back then! LOL.
I love the sound effects on this game, I'll never forget them! Oh man the robots used to piss me off so much!!! It was so hard to aim with the clunky old mac classic mouse too.
We had the Macs in school. Our school was the first to install computers instead of typewriters in my country. Played hours of this game. Super adrenaline rush since it was forbidden to game on the Macs. And i nearly go expelled over it.
I used to play this game during school classes as we could never afford an apple mac. lol. It was such good fun. I actually prefer these retro games to the modern stuff.
This was one of my favorite classic mac games that I used to play on my dads mac when I was a kid( I think I first played it when I was 7 or 8) I doubt it would work on any of the newer macs. my other favorites were "mac challenger" a game where you had to land the space shuttle, "MacVegas" which was Apples version of casino gaming, and Ferrari Grand Prix which for its time had some pretty great graphics(even if it was only in black, white and grey)
@Protoman85 You aim your rocks with a mouse,it's in old school B&W,every thing in the Genesis version is a few pixels off,and some of the sounds were cut in the Genesis version.
This clearly beats the shit out of the Genesis port. Also features original programming Jonathan Gay (co creator of Flash web software). THIS is the gem of gaming as it was originally intended.
I noticed that the mac version is more responsive and smoother than the Genesis version and the CDI version. Yet, this has some of the same voice clips from the Genesis version. Though I know that the Mac version of this game came in 1986.
I remember playing it when I was a kid. It's still a pain in the ass. This one and another mac game of 86 wich was called asteroid or something, a lazy smup where you turn on yourself to defend from incoming asteroids till you puke your own guts.
I came here after looking this game up, after watching the AVGN ep. The genesis version he played looked absolutely deplorable. This one on the other hand, looks worlds better. Like something I would actually play better.
Many happy hours playing this game and its sequel. It amused me to no end that the executioner's whip wasn't long enough to hit all three prisoners. I was easily amused circa 1990.
Wow, this actually looks playable compared to the console ports.
It really is! Much better control and playability and the graphics actually have their own charm and atmosphere
Even though this version is in black and white, for some reason it looks way better than the Sega Genesis port.
ok now this game was in monochrome indeed the real actual version was on the macintosh computer.
LJN making fun of EA. Now I've seen everything.
Yep, and I’m sure AVGN fans know what the genesis version was like
This was the first game I ever saw and played as a kid, amazing graphics for a low res black and white game!
What is the name of this popular music I keep hearing?
Where are the ñañañaña enemies? xD
The mutants are in the outside level (the one with the vultures) and some other ones.
This game was a big part of my childhood. We had one of the first black and white Macs with this game on floppy disk. Thanks for the video! Trouble 3 was a pain in the @$$ when you're 5 years old.
Did the last fireball stage ever crash on you when unlocking the wall to the wizard? After all i didn't have the origional disk, just a copy.
Mad Stacks it did Not ocur on my Mac SE, though it was a copy too.
The same for me!!! ❤❤❤
LoL I was just sharing this with some people. Omg the nostalgia. The hours spent. The deaths I had tallied. Great times. I was 5 as well! I look at it now and man... I would breeze through this now hahaha!
Hope it would resurect with AI now!
The moment we all came for: 2:03
lmao looks like Shaggy from scooby doo trippin on Mushrooms
Mine is 03:28
I want this to be the sound when my brother texts!
Wow, this takes me back! I remember playing this, along with Loderunner, Taskmaker, and Gang Wars on my black and white Mac. So many memories.
omg loderunner! thanks for the reminder!!
Oh I love watching this so much! I played this game over and over as a child, could probably do it with my eyes closed. Thank you so much!
These sounds instantly bring me back to childhood.
I played this when I started university in the 80s...happy days. It was great fun.
This guy left way too many sacks behind.
Some serious nostalgia of my high school days… I'm not sure why it was so much into this type of retro games than games of today. Thank you for posting this and putting a smile on my face going back down memory lane.
You can't appreciate this game unless you were around when it first came out and played it on a little mac.
DC is the ultimate classic. First Mac game I played as youngster. I will never stop loving this game or its sequel. Just wish it was easier to find nowadays to play as the original.
Wow! Nice blast from the past. This game rocked it! I remember playing this for over 8 hours straight one day back in '86 or '87.
Wonderful Memories, to hear those sound effects again !! Especially the "dizzy" one !
I'm glad I sparked your memory, it's such a fun game! :)
I played the heck out of this game back in the day! Loved it. This brings back so many memories of my wasted childhood.
I wrote a guide on how to get this game running in Windows XP/Vista, It's at the Dark Castle forum, the link to the forum is in the video description.
I used to love this game. So long ago now.
This game looks incredible for its age. After watching videos of the other ports, I see why this is the best, even without color.
This version actually looks quite good, alot of early console ports were terrible.
I didn’t know games could have such high quality sound back then
Played this on a Mac 512Ke back in the day. It just about drove me crazy.
The Good old DAYS... I LOVE THOSE SOUNDS
This game kept me sane writing up my PhD in 1989 - the sound effects were brilliant. happy days!
Wow, this is the first time I've seen this since I played it back in '89 - school principal would let us use the Mac in her office to play games at lunchtime. Dark Castle & Shuffle Puck cafe were amazing at the time.
Cool principal!
This was the first game I played on a computer other than Zork.
I remember this game, good times.
This is the very first video game I have any memory of. I think I first saw it when I was about 4 or 5 years old. This video is a nostalgasm for me.
Nostalgia... Me and my mom use to go at this game at the end of the day when she got home from work. I loved every second of it.
This was one of the first video games I ever played when I was little, I also remember playing the sequel.
Dude, this was one of the first games I ever played, when I was 4. My hands were so little that I had to use my chin to hit spacebar when I wanted to jump (or throw rock, I don't remember the controls clearly). At the time this was the most impressive game out there!
This really shows how advanced Macs were back then, the game plays like a modern flash game albeit without colour.
Desde Venezuela... Es una belleza, jugaba Dark Castle cuando tenía apenas 9 años en una Macintosh plus (512 kb Ram) Los sonidos y las imágenes son fantásticas! Me trasladan en el tiempo...
This game is the first thing i ever craved, that i can remember. I remember being 4 and playing this after preschool.
I had that too, as well as Swamp Witch, Zoony, The Village, Karth of the Jungle, Enchanted Scepters and a lot of other text-and-still-image "World Builder" games. I was a little kid at the time. Oh my word, this much nostalgia just might give me a heart seizure.... Great memories! Thanks for posting!
I swear, the “woah” sound effect was used in the Futurama episode, “Roswell that ends well”
Loved this game! Takes me back
I had this for SEGA. Worst game I ever played. I don't understand what it thought it was trying to be.
Looks much better on MAC.
Ajnin42 Electronic Farts made it
This game was designed for home computers in mind because there were more button layouts to work with compared to home console controllers; which had limited buttons and configurations.
this looks so much better than the CDI and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive versions.
***** Well, the game was meant to be controlled with a mouse, sooooo...
we meet again~ i found you stranger
this and Lode Runner...great old days!!
I played this so much in the late 80s on my Mac SE.
I was so frickin' good at this game. It was the only thing I played for a year, and I LOVED the sequel. It's frustrating to watch this video cause all the shortcuts (he doesn't down-jump off ledges, he pauses between staircases, and he never ducks to avoid the guards)... man, I was all over this. wish you'd pick the wrong key - the shaking head followed by the 16 ton weight was hilarious back in the day.
This game got me into video games in the 80's
What a shame James mentioned just the bad games... This one was really good.
I remember this is one of the first computer games I ever played "besides Tetris" and this game turned me into a gamer
Damn... that noscope @ 1:55
man that was awsmoe.......... it took me bk, thing i remember most was those SFX and MUSIC............loved it..
Back in the day, these graphics blew my mind.
This was one of the first non-ASCII games I ever played when I was a kid.
OMG... I LOVED Dark Castle! I remember playing it on my old 512 Mac. My girlfriend and I use to play it and we'd be laughing our butts off!
I should do a speed run of this. This was my first true love and I could probably do it just from muscle memory. :)
I used to LOVE this game!
I played this with my brothers in the early 90's! It was such great fun!!
thank you VERY much for the info. I've been playing it for the past week. i LOVE this game!
GOD I miss this game! I heard about the iPhone hoax, and was sorely disappointed. Beyond Dark Castle was tremendous!
Awesome. I used to play this for hours when I was a kid.
James Rolfe really loves this game.
You grew up on Dark Souls, I grew up on Dark Castle. We are not the same.
Can you imagine playing Sonic the Hedgehog with Dark Castle-esque controls and physics?
This is where Lucas Pope took inspiration from for the aesthetics of Return of the Obra Dinn
These are the sounds of my youth. SMA!
I like how you have the deaths too :)
This looks a lot better than the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

I loved this game in the late 80s, was the start of gaming for me!
Any idea if we can figure out a way to play this now ??
I actually watched the episode, then played the Genesis version and then I decided to figure out why the hell does this game exist
Brings back memories!
This clearly beats the shit out of the Genesis port. Also features original programming Jonathan Gay (co creator of Flash web software). THIS is the gem of gaming as it was originally intended.
actually urinatingtree sent me here 4 years ago

1:55 headshot 2:57 headshot :)
Real nice to see this again!
legendary beyond all belief ❤
I used to LOVE games like this.
Finally rememberd the name of this mac game and found the game + emu.. nostalgic :) :) :)
I go through the hallway and get a "system bus error"
Wow! Memories...
played this as a kid so much, i remember there was a part 2 to it that had like a backpack chopper and lotsas stages... nianianiania nianianiania
I was very sad there was no shout-out to the Mac version in the AVGN ep.
Long live dark Castle, you're not bad for being 'Rusty' :)
My first game get adicted!! 1987, then. Hellcat over pacifc, Pathways into darkness , Marathon.....
fantastique !!!! Great great game ! I played a lot with il back then !!!
wow.. I'm 6 years old again...
I came here after looking this game up, after watching the AVGN ep. The genesis version he played looked absolutely deplorable. This one on the other hand, looks worlds better. Like something I would actually play better.
The black and white OG version is somehow the most responsive and best controlling version
Many happy hours playing this game and its sequel. It amused me to no end that the executioner's whip wasn't long enough to hit all three prisoners. I was easily amused circa 1990.
Looking at AVGN, you guys think Mike Matei will look at what James left out? You know, the Amiga port and even Return to Dark Castle?
I played this a ton on the Mac. The port was so terrible because thanks to the lack of a mouse.
Oh yeah. This game kicked ass. Ever played the color version?
