Multi Level Shaft Descent At The Star Mine - A Mojave Desert Gold Mine

  • Join us for a ride through part of the Mojave desert, and a climb down the steep ladders, to see the colorful mineral vein at the Star Mine. This is a gold mine that operated primarily in the early 1900's. There is a well preserved head frame over the shaft that was used to haul equipment and supplies into the mine and ore and waste rock out. There is also some very nice miners graffiti done with the carbide headlamps they used for lighting their way through the mine. There are a few other drifts and shafts around the main site that we also explored.
    We hope you enjoy the video!

      @@corneliuswalker1971 Well Menards stuff has different stamps on it than Home Depot and Lowes. See a lot of Canadian wood. I think Menards just buys a lower grade. Lowes is generally a decent price and decent quality. Menards is the cheapest here but a lot of their stuff is only good for fires or concrete forms. I searched through an entire bin of 2 x 2s once and could'nt find anything usable. Well, maybe for hockey sticks. It was cull lumber. Home Depot is always the highest in everything. Almost never go there.

      @@rogersmith7396 you’re never going find quality 2x2’s in a bunk unless you’re looking through clear pine, birch, etc. like 2x4 they’re used in construction. Also pricing is going vary because wood is a commodity. Typically wood is going about the same price for construction grade. But for example I just checked and HD has redwood .50 cents cheaper than at Lowes.

  • @stevengill1736
    @stevengill1736 2 года назад +2

    Always nice when the ladders in a vertical are in good shape. People love to drop rocks, pipe, anything around to enjoy the crash of smashing debris. Also, you mentioned heat - ever been in a mine where the geothermal gradient was obvious? Or did I ask you that before? (Oldtimer's disease strikes again). I was in one that at 800 feet down was noticeable, and by 1000 feet was uncomfortably warm.
    I can't imagine what it must be like in those South African gold mines, or in that Lucky Friday mine in Idaho that's what, almost 10,000 feet? Man, the air pressure must be higher too, like you were in a hyperbaric chamber!
    Calcium nitrate? Never seen that....i mean any nitrate can be an oxidizer, but why would it be inside the mine? Miners don't usually mix their own explosives. It would make a good cap sensitive Sprengel mix with kerosene or whatever, like ANFO, but that's pretty unlikely...... what's your idea? Cheers...

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 года назад +1

      It drives me nuts when I watch a video of people in mines chucking rocks down a shaft. It's very destructive to a ladder system. This one was in great shape.
      We have been in mines where the temperature and humidity have changed drastically in a single drift. Many times the lower levels of mines are flooded which raises the uncomfortable factor.
      I'm not sure how exactly the powder monkey used the calcium nitrate. I assume it's used similarly to how ANFO is used. Thanks for the interesting comment, Steven!

      We always enjoy hiking around the mine sites like this one. You never know what you will see. We were simply using what is called a top rope anchor on this one, Max. We had all of our climbing gear with us in our packs in case a ladder section fell off and we needed to ascend the rope. We were using a friction knot on our rope to catch us in case of a fall or ladder problem. The knot was tied using a loop called a hollow block and the knot is called an auto block. A Prusik knot is similar and works the same way. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    What makes some mines hot and humid? Is it thermal activity? The good mines seem to have their ladder rungs recessed, that wire was a first for me. Not a whole lot of artifacts but interesting just the same. Thanks, T&J!

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  2 года назад +1

      The mineral vein is the real star here, as it is the whole reason for the mine in the first place. There must be geothermal activity in some mines that are hot and humid. I can't imagine working hard in a hot mine all day. It feels good to come up to the fresh after only being down there for a couple hours. The wire on the ladders was a first for me, too. Tom and Julie, that was one of the greatest mine adventures. speaking of Star mines, our 1st date was a trip over to see the morning star mine near Cima. on the other side of the mountain there was the evening star mine. I recently researched the morning star mine and found that it had been opened up in a giant pit and there wasn't anything left. which was sad. By the way when we went down in the mine, we hit bad air, almost passed out. We had to scramble up to the top level again. how do you protect yourself against carbon dioxide gathering in the bottom of these tunnels that could kill you? I thought today, it might be a good idea to wear one of those Blood oxygen meters on your finger once in a while to make sure you have enough oxygen? Thanks

      I've heard of both the star mines in the Preserve that you mentioned although we have not been to either. We spend a fair amount of time in the Preserve each year.
      We both wear monitors that check for air quality. One is an O2 meter and the other a 4 gas monitor. Thsnkfully, we really haven't had many issues with bad air.

      Hi Dan. We use both. We have had several over the years because of the two year operating life. I carry a four gas detector, and Julie carries an O2 monitor. How many ounces of gold would a ton of ore produce for a reasonabley good mine.and would any of these mines be viable today with gold at 2000 per ounce.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Год назад

      There are so many variables and different quality of ores that I can't give you a good answer. I can say, though, that it would probably be in the grams rather than ounces per ton. There is still a lot of mining going on in the area where this mine is located. So, apparently, there is still enough gold here to at least make prospecting fun. To extract gold that is locked in an ore is very difficult and requires a crusher, mill, and then a way to recover fine gold like a Miller table or the equivalent. Thanks for the comment, Dan!👍😁💰⛏️
