I've actually been in this mine a Long time ago it is really unique the hanging wall twists and bends around and ends up on the back of the shaft instead of the side pretty interesting. This was a very productive mind ,produced quite a bit of gold and silver. I just got back , I have been in Silverton Colorado . for a week doing some exploring in that area quite amazing amount of work that was done there Big big producer silver, lead, Galena ,Gold lots of things. Well it's wonderful to see you again and thank you so much for taking me along with you. I always enjoy it very much be careful in what you do and have a great time.

So cool. Been there a couple of times and walked the streets. Always wondered about the mines and the vein material. Often in talking to other miners, we have come to the conclusion that the blast, is the first form of concentration in any ore. Hence,we think the broom. The vein is usually shattered from moving,..and the gold is precipitated in the vugs and empty spaces. It breaks loose in a blast. Good way to high-grade. 😊 I enjoyed
Interesting thing about trash. I used to frequent a lake in a national park up in Montana. I got to know the ranger, Lyle, quite well. He died a year ago at 102! He worked as a ranger until he was 97. Anywho, at this lake was Montana's first oil well and there were well pieces - parts on the bottom just off from the campground. A diver went down to look at the equipment and while down there, collected a bag full of trash. Coke cans and the such. When the diver came back up, he showed what he had cleaned out to Lyle. Lyle said "thank you, but I have to ask you to put it all back". Lyle went on to explain that once the trash was in the lake, the NPS considered it archeological artifacts and had to remain in the lake for future generations. He also said that he will ticket you for littering but once there, ticket you for removing historical artifacts. He then said yeah, it's stupid, but them's the rules. He and I talked about it and we both agreed it was typical Gub-ment logic. I can kind of see the point: When archeologist explore old historic sites, where do they dig? The trash dumps. I'm with you though, I hate litter! I have somehow missed this mine. I thought I had canvassed that area years ago. Maybe the door was locked then. Don't remember in my dotage. Haven't been around Rhyolite in years. Thanks for taking us in.
Hi Jim. Yes, those are the rules in a national park. I understand about trash being an artifact. I think it's great to see things that the miners who worked the mines left behind. Not so much for someone who last year left their water bottle or beer can while touring the mine. I suppose in 100 years some people would like to see that stuff. The same could be said about spray painted graffiti on buildings, bridges, and rock faces. I still don't enjoy seeing it. The good news for those who like trash is that there is plenty of it out there. Thanks for the comment!👍

Every time I go out in the hinterlands, I too return with a bag or two of trash I cleaned up. I don't think future archeologist will be lacking for artifacts from our time, unfortunately. About that diver, I told him later that he should go back and get the trash and just dump it without Lyle knowing about it. He laughed and said he would think about it. My wife and I then went fishing in our kayaks so I don't know the final outcome. I love you folks showing me the places I have missed! Keep up the good work.
Fun explore! The ladders look like they had been replaced at some point. With all the paint markings, I suspect the mine had been surveyed for minereals in recent history.

Wow that was a neat “piano hinged”gate, that’s not going anywhere! Seeing the smooth wall on the back, don’t believe I’ve seen that before. Y’all usually take some time to show the outside entrance to a mine, was this one just not that interesting? As always thanks for the time you spend putting these videos together to share with us.

@w9jim Hi Jim. Glad that you enjoyed seeing the mine. There are a few dogs at the bottom of shafts that we've seen. I know of one first-hand story of a family that brought their dog into a mine only to have it run towards a person with a flashlight and fall in a winze shaft. I don't think the fall killed it because it was found a year or so later, some distance from the bottom of the shaft. There was no way for the family to get down to where the dog fell. There is no good reason for a dog to be in a mine. Thanks for the comment!👌😊

Hello Tom and Julie, The blue jug was a Chevron oil jug of quite a while ago. Have not seen a tie plate like that for over fifty years! That style was heavily used in Michigan's copper country, primarily on mining company track. A lot of ties were white cedar, a soft but somewhat rot resistant wood and readily available from swampy areas. The plates tended to destroy the ties. The rails tended to cut the plates into three parts. IMO, totally unsuitable for the purpose but nevertheless widely used on branch lines. Mainlines usually had hardwood ties and traditional plates with a small percent of cedar ties. Be safe, dave

Hi Jeff. I always try to show the colorful minerals if they are present. In this mine, the country rock is primarily rhyolite, which contains gold but is less than spectacular as far as color goes. If all these tunnels are blasted with dynamite, why aren't the floors just as jagged as the walls?? I notice in all mine videos, here and elsewhere, the floors are always flat as a pancake.
Hi Gary. The floors have been made smooth to accommodate the rail, which is necessary to haul the ore and waste rock out and equipment and supplies in. I would assume that jackhammers and other power equipment was used to flatten the floor. Before that, a pick and sledgehammer must have been used. Thanks for the comment!👍
My Friend, Desert Rat Dan or Danny Cronkhite knows a whole bunch about some of the mines in Rhyolite! On a trip to Death Valley Danny and myself ran into "Seldom Seen Slim!"
The graffiti and trash was more likely left by the surveys that had been done in the 80s and 90s. I see a correlation between the survey and aged candy wrappers, junk food bags with older pop cans. The people who did the spray paint should have to clean every mine(fat chance) they were in. Like tagging the Grand Canyon as far as I'm concerned. Sorry but this is my biggest gripe with these mine explores.

Hi Mike. While we have seen plenty of honey pots in mines, I believe that these were for checking the high grade ore. They would crush the ore in these half barrels and pan it out to see the quality of it. If you look through the comments on this video, look for one from an old miner who goes by TBI Firefighter to see what he says. We have seen several like these with plumbing and outlets for water etc. Thanks for commenting!👍
Yes, that is generally true. Especially if they are in an out of the way place with a newspaper nearby. I suspect these were for processing ore samples the way there is plumbing involved. We have seen others like this with light colored residue inside. Thanks DZL!👍
Hi John. Good point. In this particular mine, you really wouldn't have a problem summoning help if you got locked in. We both carry whistles that could be heard from the road if we were at that gate. Other remote mines would be a different story. Have fun at the greatest fair grounds that I know of!🚘
Yeah years ago World War II buddy of mine and I we used to cruise Arizona all the back roads and byways it is amazing amount of trash you could find we used to always leave a sign saying cleaned up by Californians
Yeah I'm talking about those paint cans I had a logging contraction Big Bear here in California and the Rangers have painted the trees for me to cut left all the cans behind I didn't care I picked up all the trash out in the forest

Thank for the No Littering Plug Tom, when I had my Lode Mines every time I went to go work I'd have to do Trash Patrol first. We call those barrel halves High-grade Buckets, when Sampling you toss the High-grade Ore into the barrel halves and then you can Pulveris it with your Sledge Hammer then add water and test for Color with you Gold Pan or at least that what I used them for, well you know me and my long comments so I'll shut up now, as alway Love you two and your videos too

The live animals we have seen inside of mines besides bats are mice, rats, birds, snakes, and rabbits. The birds and snakes don't venture very far in from the portal. Thanks for the question. 👍
Wouldn't it be great to work your butt off for years out there just to find your lungs are full of glass.. I wonder about the things I breathed doing cave explores. It wasn't the stuff I knew about that worried me, but the things I didn't.

That's a great mine. Outside of Trona, there's a mine with a dead dog at the bottom of an 80 foot vertical shaft.
@w9jim Hi Jim. Glad that you enjoyed seeing the mine. There are a few dogs at the bottom of shafts that we've seen. I know of one first-hand story of a family that brought their dog into a mine only to have it run towards a person with a flashlight and fall in a winze shaft. I don't think the fall killed it because it was found a year or so later, some distance from the bottom of the shaft. There was no way for the family to get down to where the dog fell. There is no good reason for a dog to be in a mine. Thanks for the comment!👌😊

Hello Tom and Julie, The blue jug was a Chevron oil jug of quite a while ago.
Have not seen a tie plate like that for over fifty years! That style was heavily used in Michigan's copper country, primarily on mining company track. A lot of ties were white cedar, a soft but somewhat rot resistant wood and readily available from swampy areas. The plates tended to destroy the ties. The rails tended to cut the plates into three parts. IMO, totally unsuitable for the purpose but nevertheless widely used on branch lines. Mainlines usually had hardwood ties and traditional plates with a small percent of cedar ties. Be safe, dave

If all these tunnels are blasted with dynamite, why aren't the floors just as jagged as the walls?? I notice in all mine videos, here and elsewhere, the floors are always flat as a pancake.
Hi Gary. The floors have been made smooth to accommodate the rail, which is necessary to haul the ore and waste rock out and equipment and supplies in. I would assume that jackhammers and other power equipment was used to flatten the floor. Before that, a pick and sledgehammer must have been used. Thanks for the comment!👍

The basins were more than likely for mixing anfo with sugar it would speed the acceleration of the 94% nitrate 6% fuel oil.
That would make sense. We see a lot of empty sugar and anfo bags in the old mines. Thanks for your input!👍😄
The graffiti and trash was more likely left by the surveys that had been done in the 80s and 90s. I see a correlation between the survey and aged candy wrappers, junk food bags with older pop cans. The people who did the spray paint should have to clean every mine(fat chance) they were in. Like tagging the Grand Canyon as far as I'm concerned. Sorry but this is my biggest gripe with these mine explores.

Hi Mike. While we have seen plenty of honey pots in mines, I believe that these were for checking the high grade ore. They would crush the ore in these half barrels and pan it out to see the quality of it. If you look through the comments on this video, look for one from an old miner who goes by TBI Firefighter to see what he says. We have seen several like these with plumbing and outlets for water etc. Thanks for commenting!👍

Yes, that is generally true. Especially if they are in an out of the way place with a newspaper nearby. I suspect these were for processing ore samples the way there is plumbing involved. We have seen others like this with light colored residue inside. Thanks DZL!👍

Hi John. Good point. In this particular mine, you really wouldn't have a problem summoning help if you got locked in. We both carry whistles that could be heard from the road if we were at that gate. Other remote mines would be a different story.

Yeah years ago World War II buddy of mine and I we used to cruise Arizona all the back roads and byways it is amazing amount of trash you could find we used to always leave a sign saying cleaned up by Californians
Yeah I'm talking about those paint cans I had a logging contraction Big Bear here in California and the Rangers have painted the trees for me to cut left all the cans behind I didn't care I picked up all the trash out in the forest

We call those barrel halves High-grade Buckets, when Sampling you toss the High-grade Ore into the barrel halves and then you can Pulveris it with your Sledge Hammer then add water and test for Color with you Gold Pan or at least that what I used them for, well you know me and my long comments so I'll shut up now, as alway Love you two and your videos too

The live animals we have seen inside of mines besides bats are mice, rats, birds, snakes, and rabbits. The birds and snakes don't venture very far in from the portal. Thanks for the question. 👍
