The video for this came out right around the time the VH1 channel was taking off and providing music/videos for an older demographic. Level 42 got TONS of airplay on VH1, and almost none on MTV (where you'd find New Kids On The Block or New Edition).
Mark King from Level 42 is one of the best bass players in the world. And these are seasoned musicians. No boy band here... I recommend a cursory three minutes of research at minimum. ;)
This song is so good. I was born in 82 and all the songs I liked as a child stuck with me. Especially in the crazy times I live in now at 40... I'd give anything to go back to the 80s as an adult.. Time flies.. Once I hit 30, time felt like it hit warp speed.. Summer vacations felt like they lasted years.. Now a year feels like 3 months.. Crazy..
Level 42 were huge in the UK (and elsewhere) back in the 80's. They had one of the coolest baselines in the business, courtesy of Mark King, one of the finest base players around. They are still touring today.....
Marketing pictures and videos aside, Level 42 actually came out of the Fusion Jazz genre and were all excellent musicians. Mark King did most of the lead vocals and was the bassist...if you watch some of their live performances (Jazz festival from 2010, for example) you can see he was doing an amazing job with very busy bass lines and vocals.
Boy band? LOL. Not in the slightest all of them are very proficient with musical instruments. Mark King is a world class bassist. The boy band term was coined in the 90's (and girl band) for hired singers in a group.
My friend. Level 42 was never a boy band. They were all talented musicians who played all the instruments. They had several number one songs in the 1980s and you should check out their first two albums.
Level 42 and Johnny Hates Jazz are some of the popular pop bands worldwide. Maybe except for the USA. They are not boyband. They play their own instruments and definitely they don’t dance.
@@ianadams1132 So true. Love games, Starchild, Running in the Family, The sun goes down, Hot water, The Chinese way, Are you hearing what I hear?, Leaving me now, The chant has begun.
naa, that was just prior to boy bands, the new skids on the jock came out later that decade. Level 42 is so much better musically, the bass riff in this song is so much fun to play. some slap pop elements and muted chords.
Just don't get the boy band Saw another American reaction video say exactly the same thing. Even if Id just heard them and never seen them, I wouldn't think they were a boy band. If you have the time, check them videos of them live, then you'll see they were the furthest thing from a boy band and had one of the best bassists ever - Mark King.
"Light listening"? 😂 The bass line alone is interestingly complex, let alone the vocal harmonies. It's laughable to put them in the category of those young boy vocal groups that do the dance steps.
This song was their biggest hit in early 1986 and it did much better than their other songs. I think they may be a one hit wonder band for the most part.
In the US that may appear to be true, but in the UK they were quite a major chart band. Songs like Running in the Family, Lessons in Love and It's Over are still very well known today.
@@matthewstroud4294 Yes, I live in the U.S. and "Something About You" was a Top 10 hit for them but their other singles some of them may have played on the radio but did not do nearly as well as that one hit song. But they did release other songs in the U.S. but most of us Americans only remember the one hit song.
I remember this coming out for the first time. I have the original single eeeh. Level 42 was not a boy band when they came out there was no such thing. Boy band is American concept all looks and no talent. British bands you had to sing and play something.
Boy band? Not an appropriate classification at all. These guys are legit musicians.
Bint
Wanted to hit "like" but didn't wanna ruin "42" .. legendary band..

Boy band? You have not idea.
Yep from the 80s
Mark King from Level 42 is one of the best bass players in the world. And these are seasoned musicians. No boy band here... I recommend a cursory three minutes of research at minimum. ;)
Nick Beggs is right up there with him.
This is a great representation of mid 80's pop music and I love it! ❤
Oh crazy. No, not a boy band. Real top-notch musicians with arguably the best slap bass player ever.
He has strong competition Louis Johnson, Bernard Edwards, Freddie Washington, Pops Popplewell, Marcus Miller, Wayne Braithwaite, Stuart Zender..
Dani: These guys are still out there doing it. 40 years plus! Their live videos are far better btw!

Great reaction :) Mark King was one of the greatest bassists out there. You should check out Lessons in Love preferably live.
Level 42 were huge in the UK (and elsewhere) back in the 80's. They had one of the coolest baselines in the business, courtesy of Mark King, one of the finest base players around. They are still touring today.....
I just love Mike Lindup's vocals.
Song is a timeless classic 😎😎
They are not a boy band. They were a Jazz/Rock band who played their own instruments. You should have watched the live version.
Wonderful pop song 👍👍👍

They're my favourite band and I'm pretty sure they didn't have any number ones. Not in the UK anyway.
King really kills it on this one. You younglings should check out the rest of their music.

An awesome band!❤
They had one other hit song besides this one. LESSONS IN LOVE.
“Children Say” was pretty popular too
They had lots of hits 🙄

This song ....
Amazing !
Level 42 definitely wasn’t a boy band at all. The band photo you referenced was pretty typical for the time. It wasn’t a boy band thing.
This was soundtrack of my teen years!!! 80s forever❤
Level 42
Running in the family
They were never ever a “boy band”!?!?! 🤔🤦♂️😤😖
love this song,, it brings back memeries with a lady that i once knew!!!!!
This is not a Boys Band
Great 👍 reaction great video subscribed cheers
These guys are most definitely not a boyband. They all play instruments and write their own songs.
decent song
The only reason to write great catchy music is to see beautiful women move. And this video is case in point.
naa, that was just prior to boy bands, the new skids on the jock came out later that decade. Level 42 is so much better musically, the bass riff in this song is so much fun to play. some slap pop elements and muted chords.
Yess
Boy band is not how I would classify Level 42
Was Level 42 a boy band? Not that I know.
hello ms dani.
With all due respect, Level 42 weren't a BoyBand!
I loved these guys!! Real men
Make reactions about girl things please
We can see you don’t now $h17 about music lady

Thumb was insured for 3million , so I heard ..but dont take as gospel
Musicians who could play def not boy band

Its popular in Asia too. Mark King is the best bass player… way better than most rock bassists.
@@Ken-vk8pbIf they did have other songs on the radio they weren’t getting played anymore in the 90s and 00s.
Theyre not a boy band love thats like comparing bob Dylan to Justin Bieber

C'était pas Un boy band !!!!
there were not a boy band they were old then and it wasn't that popular.
