Kuch should be 3rd imo, Drai 4th, Matthews 5th. The top 5 of McDavid, Mackinnon, Kucherov, Draisaitl, and Matthews all have a Hart and a Ted Lindsay and have constantly produced in the regular season. However, Matthews is the only person in that group who is under a point per game in the playoffs and has less than 50 career playoff points while the other 4 have over 100. I don’t think I have to explain why Mack and McDavid are better but people underrate Kuch and Drai. Kucherov has almost always been the best player on the lightning during the playoffs his whole career, he’s lead his team to 4 finals and 2 Cups. In the 3 straight finals run, he put up 93 points which is near double Matthews career in the playoffs. Kuch and Drai are also apart of only 7 players in NHL history to score 30+ points in 2 different playoff runs. It comes down to Matthews having similar (but still worse) regular season success but not having any playoff success.

IMO, the Matthews/Draisaitl debate for 3/4 is pretty straightforward. Matthews is the better goalscorer and better defensively, while Draisaitl is the better playmaker and frankly just has some unreal playoff performances. Now, personally, I would argue that the difference in competition between teams like LA, Vancouver without Demko, or the Flames in 22 when Markstrom turned into a pumpkin and teams like Boston, Tampa and god-mode Carey Price plays a role in that. With basically the sole exception of 2020 vs the Blue Jackets, I would argue the Leafs have always faced SUBSTANTIALLY better defensive teams and better goaltending, but at the end of the day that doesn’t excuse all the game 7 losses and blown series/late game leads. So, basically, here’s the argument - do you want someone that can score 2 goals and allow zero against, or score 1 goal and 3 assists but allow 2 against?
