I met a fly fisherman today at sportsmans warehouse that was gearing up to try "regular" fishing after talking for a few minutes and helping him pick some gear, he asked me what is the best way to fish. My answer was whatever is the best way that works for you. There is more than one way to catch fish. At my local lake, sometimes the trout bite on power eggs, sometimes on worms, and sometimes on roostertail spinners. Saying bait is cheating is only limiting yourself to not get bites on days that they just wont bite on artificial gear.

I went from fishing everything south of the Saltwater line in Louisiana and having tons of success to living further north in the state. Freshwater fishing is a different beast. I got super disheartened. You can get past the hump, man. Don't give up.
When I first moved to a new state I wasn't having any luck until I tried the fish angler app and it has data on moon phases and all kinds of stuff and when it says there's activity I get lots of bites. Different kinds of fish it seems like theyre all feeding. Very surprising actually. I just fish to be outside and see what happens I'm not serious about it at all. look up the solunar tables for the fish feeding periods near you, it is really time and weather dependent

Complaining about bait is like complaining about ketchup, it makes you look like the child you think they are.
As someone who was formerly a child that hated ketchup with a passion and constantly complained and shamed others for liking it(my entire family loves it and puts it on everything) I can confirm this is very accurate. I still don't like ketchup, but I'm neutral on it since it's a key ingredient in making my homemade BBQ sauce.

My dad is a 40 year old man and still fishes with live shad sometimes. But most of the time he uses artificial baits

In my mind its cheating, unless you're harvesting your catch (crappie, trout). If you're sport fishing with live bait It's cheap, which is why tournaments don't allow it usually.
@@andrewboyce7268 Walleye in winter usually won't bite on artifical, only on live bait during that time.

@@andrewboyce7268 why the hell would it be cheating? if you wanna catch fish you use the best bait you got and 90% of the time it's gonna be live bait
For me it’s the opposite. I always do way better on lures than baits. Unless I’m ice fishing, targeting carp/catfish or float fishing with live minnows, I always use lures
I don’t think using baits are considered cheating imo
It's the worms who've got an internet connection being negative.
At least you’re giving the fish something to eat then as an apology for hooking them
🤣
As I get older my requirements for where I fish and what I use for bait have been fine tuned for my own personal comfort and convenience. No more getting into kayaks, dinghies or canoes. If I cannot walk onto a sizeable bass or trawling boat, it's bank fishing only.
Fishing spots are judged by how suitable they are for setting up a lawn chair and having the occasional nap. Baits are artificials, or frozen shrimp I have purchased at the grocery store.
If I get skunked, I can always eat the rest of my bait. I end up with a seafood dinner one way or another.
Baits great brother! Forget the haters if they are there you're doing it right.
I think showing people who are potentially one day dependent on catching something, how to fish in any way and have something to eat on the table is actually pretty useful.
To me, live/natural bait is for catch and keep since there’s a chance the fish can gut it immediately if the hook set is too late.
At least with artificial, the fish will most times spit it out after realizing it’s plastic.
Had no idea people were against live bait. Most of my friends don’t understand why i use artificial lures.
Fishing with bait can be kinda tricky because they have to find it and you can absolutely present it wrong, AND they can sometimes nibble it off without hooking... i lost 3 grasshoppers over lunch at my fishing spot because they were just eating it off the hook. Plus....I fish to find keepers to eat, so I'm going to use anything that works.
Yeah with lures youre not getting your bait stolen by baitfish all the time
I’ve never heard someone try to put someone else down for using live bait rather than artificial.
I know jack all about fishing but using lures seems normal. Its called a Lure for a reason, it’s gonna bait the fish into thinking it’s food and give the same output as actual food instead of losing it
Exactly thats why its called Sports fishing.
That's crazy that using bait is one of the main things in fishing and people think it's dumb. Bet they haven't even been outside in their life.

It all depends. As a fishing guide and registered captain. If I’m going out by myself I usually throw artificial but I’ll leave a pinfish on a popping cork and leave it out of the back of the boat. if youre fishing live bait you aren't really learning anything. The bait does the work. You are just killin fish for fun because they eat live bait and die to the hook. Artificial bait typically hooks the mouth and you are learning a skill. Both live and artificial bait has its advantages.
@@schukls993 Try that approach in the ocean and see how far it gets you.
A real man pulls a homer and zaps the water bringing all the fish up instantly
Plus you give a built in snack for the ones you release.
And a last meal for the ones you don't.
One argument against natural bait is the fish tend to swallow the hook. That rarely happens with artificial baits. Of course if you're meat fishing that's not a problem as long as regulations allow keeping the size and species targeted.

but you end up with a lot of annoying dudes who think they know how to do things "the right way", when in reality they have no clue what they're talking about and are just repeating something they heard elsewhere.
The only thing about live bait is if you're not planning on keeping them, it can be much easier for them to swallow the hook, and then wind up killing them without intending too. So if it's catch and release, I usually stick with lures. Live bait though, crawdads are one of my faves. Also depends on what I'm fishing for.

Fishing and hunting are being infiltrated by tons of people who think you need to “pay to win”, most expensive boat, truck, rods, guns, camo etc…and they get really mad when people show up with some skill/experience that money can’t buy and catch more and kill more…the fish don’t care how expensive your rod or boat is if you don’t have the sense to cast into the right places, or pick the right bait, and the deer don’t care if you have $3000 rifle with a $1000 scope if you can’t shoot for shit and don’t understand how to find game… shore fishing with real bait is accessible to anyone with a $20 setup from Walmart and a $5 container or worms or minnows, and that makes people look down on it, even though it’s just as and sometimes more effective than plastics and bass boats
