Possibly my favorite wasp, especially because of how I first met one: she just crawled right up my leg while I was stargazing! I caught it, brought it inside to identify, and mom was NOT amused when we found out about the potent sting. I, the family bug hugger, naturally thought it was the coolest thing ever. A year or so later, we found a dead female out back, so I gave it to my biology teacher (our final project had been to make an insect collection); he loved it, and proceeded to regale his class with a description of these insects and how they reproduce, complete with the obligatory comparison to the xenomorphs from Alien.
Im always amazed that neither Coyote or this guy just tense up when they get stung and accidentally crush the insect with the forceps... or just accidentally let go of it.
@@nkhg888 basically the same way you could pick up a crouton with a pair of tongs and "feel" how tight you have to hold for a firm grip without breaking it. The exoskeleton of this insect is robust, you'd be able to feel the strength of its carapace through the ends of the forceps. I imagine it would actually take a surprising amount of force to crush it.
I worked in West Texas, ft Davis and el paso and they are abundant and friendly, I could basically pet them and they love some bush with small white flowers where multiple t hawks and other flying insects can be found so they aren't loners or territorial from what I experienced, I would pick the biggest one to put my sun glasses next to for scale in my pictures which I got alot of

I legitimately thought there was a hive of them in the tree until I found out that they were solitary. That tree was cursed with stinging insects, it also was host to thousands of smaller bees and wasps but I could always tell which ones were the t hawks
i mean you're probably not gonna get stung by anything unless you unconsciously go out of your way to catch an insect and then push it onto your skin for a couple seconds at a time
I absolutely value Mark's determination to get "THE" sting, even after taking about 8 smaller, but still potent stings. Taking stings from giants, I wonder if he'd consider greater banded hornet (Vespa tropica), the Asian/Japanese giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), and another nice looking solitary wasp in Europe, the Megascolia maculata.
I have nothing but respect for you Mark! I'm someone who like freaks out when they see an ant or spider crawling around, so going head to head with the amount of creatures you encounter and allowing yourself to be stung/bite/pinched/spiked etc takes some real dedication and courage. I just came from the video where coyote did this and he actually let it go and through his pain reacted fast enough to trap it in a jar
