Glad you're enjoying it! Thanks for sharing your reactions. Zach Taylor Eisen as Aang delivers and incredible performance as Aang. He was only around 12 when the show started, and he manages to get so much nuance into his delivery. Yeah, there's a lot of emotion in his portrayal - you really feel for this kid.

The Air Nomads are/were pacifists. But, they do train in martial arts as that is how the focus for bending.
If you notice, in monk Gyatso's chamber there are scores of dead Fire Nation soldiers. He fought a good fight. It's speculated he removed all the air from the chamber. Without air they could not fire bend let alone breathe or fight.
