Sokka's misogyny arc in the early episodes meant so much for his character for the rest of the series. Firstly, you can understand why he believed what he believed in the beginning based on how and where he was raised along with his pressure to be the "man of the tribe". He was quickly put in his place by Suki, his worldview was changed for the better, and he spent the rest of the show proving to everyone that he can be a hero even without bending powers. While winning pretty much every girl's heart along the way. Absolute legend.
A note: Yue is the princess because she's the northern chief's daughter. Based on that, I'd say Sokka's assessment of himself as a prince because he's the southern chief's son was entirely accurate with the information we had available at the time, pre LoK "one tribe" retcons. The fact that his tribe was much smaller in scale and more impoverished doesn't really change that they did basically hold the same rank as each-other.
Agreed. They should be on the same diplomatic level. Otherwise the earth king could call the northern chief a petty lord because the north is mostly one city compared to an entire continent
Sokka is the pinnacle example of how you make the comic relief actually funny, AND give them plot importance and depth. His character development is one of the best in the series, and he'll always be the ultimate heart (and back) bender.

I saw a fun/sad fan theory that the reason Toph became chief of police is because originally, yes it was Suki who was supposed to fill that role. However, because she died early, Toph took up that role because they had become so close to each other over the years.
Sokka gets to be the parallel to so many characters. He and Katara are such interesing foils for Zuko and Azula. Being the less powerful older brother to a prodigy sister, growing into the role of a leader that was given but not earned at the beginning of the show, the swordplay, the different brand of daddy issues. Azula and Katara are both considered the pride of their people, able to master rare bending techniques with relative ease, and a defining moment for both of them is the loss of their mother.
@@congobar3816 Haha. Nice proposal. Jet and Sokka would be very funny together. I am partial to Jetko for a similar reason. The lulz potential is very high together with the angst of 'Lee' having to hide his identity. It's a trashfire but it's my trashfire.
Kind of off-topic, but that “Admiral Choi! Prepare to meet your fate!” line, followed by the guy getting dumped into the ocean, never fails to crack me up…
Sokka went from thinking women can't be warriors to going into the biggest battle of his life with 2 girls by his side, also he had no ideas where Ang was at the start of the fight and he never questioned it once.
14:12 That's what still amazes me about A:TLA to this day. It's not that long, but it's set over about a year. And you really feel it. Maybe it's the sheer number of diverse arcs and locations they go through. Every location they stay in for more than one episode, it really feels like they spent months there. Every season feels like a lifetime.
I think the big thing for Toph and Sokka comes from the book afterwards where as adults, it is hinted at that they were living together at least for a time, and that suki is out of the picture(amicably). And judging by the books and Korra show, they do spend an awful lot of time together after the group splits. So it’s not far fetched to think Toph never fully grew out of that crush and that they might have had a one-off in all that time spent together, or even a full fledged relationship in the fledgling republic city that fractured when Sokka eventually returned to the southern water tribe. Personally, I think they were gonna make those two a thing at the end of the show, but decided against it after seeing people’s love for suki and for Toph’s tough girl persona.
To be fair, I think they also declined to make it official because of how short and young Toph seemed next to Sokka, who had a lot more serious moments that made him seem older and more mature. Kinda has the same problems as Aang and Katara. While Katara seems older and more mature than she is, Aang often feels younger and immature than he is. That, in turn, makes their dynamic feel a bit…off.
Sokkla was a ship I never even considered until I saw all the Modern AU art the person who did the drawing at 40:43 made, now I dig all the AUs of them being the two smartest people in the room who challenge each other.
Sokka is the best character in Avatar: the Last Airbender. His absolute brilliance combined with his amazing comic relief make him an essential character in the gaang. In this essay I will be…
My man's that fish joke was hurt enough but the Kaguya line? I'm dieing inside and of laughter because it's so wrong but so damn funny. 😆💯 Please keep making awesome vids like this
Sokkha and toph is such a good oldest brother youngest sister relationship. Toph always safest while in the air or in water with sokkha holding her and sokkha shielding her from the rubble she could see. And the scene where a blind 12 year is hanging of the edge with the only thing she can feel is sokkha hand, Yh they trust each other and rlly care for each other
I’m totally down for this whole “Here’s a character, here’s the main ship, the side ship, and all the other shit fans create.” Type of video. Really giving appreciation to the fandom bicycle. (If you hadn’t already done a video or two about Hunter/Willow I’d suggest that because Hunter is absolutely the fandom bicycle of the Owl House fandom and it’s hilarious)
Azula also always always tales Sokka out first. 4 benders attack her and she strikes his boomerang down first. Everytime they are on screen together, she knows who the threat is
I stand by my opinion that Sokka x Sukki is the best written romance in both the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. I don't get why they could never replicate the charm that was Sokka x Sukki with any of the other ships.
I personally suspect it has to do with the fact that the show runners Mike and Bryan actually had a writing team working with them for Atla, some of these writers really wanted Zuko and Katara to be a ship (thusly, were responsible for adding the scenes with their “accidental” chemistry that popularised the ship among fans) but Mike and Bryan were adamant about a Kataang endgame. Regardless, it’s possible these other writers were the predominant driving force for including Sokka and Suki’s relationship, after all they were only really a background relationship that Mike and Bryan didn’t ever intend to exist after their first episode together. If the writing team was in charge of writing Sokka and Suki’s relationship it would make a LOT more sense considering how consistently bad all the other romances that Mike and Bryan were credited as writing turned out to be 😅
@Sanakudou If you listen to the Braving the Elements podcast then way more featured guests on the podcast have said that their favorite ship is Sukka rather than Kataang, even though Kataang is the major official couple of the series that takes up the most screen time. Tim Hedrick and Joaquim dos Santos, who both made large contributions to the production of the Avatar franchise, have stated that Sukka is their favorite ship in the series.
Because Sokka x Suki was legit an accident that came from good writing and good chemistry between characters. The show runners didn’t originally plan for Suki to be a recurring character. They tried forcing other ships, usually by manufacturing petty or cliche romantic subplots or conflicts. Because those moments were forced and hung in the air, we never really got to see the characters involved develop natural chemistry. Take Aang and Katara. Do they have good moments together as friends where they just have fun or play off of each other? Not really, and these moments get even fewer as the show moves along. The show runners were so focused on making them a pairing that they neglected their friendship and dynamic. Every time they have a scene together alone, they’re usually left reeling from an awkward romantic feeling in the air or a conflict about their romantic feelings. They never just get to be themselves together in a natural way. Same thing with Zuko and Mai. Does Mai put herself on the line for Zuko? Yeah. But that doesn’t necessarily make viewers ship them. We see friends and family rescue each other in Avatar a lot. Zuko and Mai never got screen time to just develop their dynamic or to improve each other. That’s why, despite her being a one-off, many people ship Zuko with that Ba Sing Sei Girl (Jin). Because her cheeriness played off of Zuko’s dour and awkward manner, and because she managed to soothe Zuko and to get him to show his hidden depths.
Sukka is cute and enjoyable, Kataang is forced and cringe. You could even argue that Kataang ruins the story itself because Aang gets his chakra open via deus ex machina when he hits a rock instead of just letting go of Katara on his own. There's so many militant Kataang shippers and I have never understood that since Kataang is such a mid and boring ship. I think people who are diehard Kataang shippers are either tasteless or project themselves onto Aang. Probably both. Despite the aggressive fanbase, their fan contents aren't good. Their fanfictions are lame and now even Zukka has better fanart than them (more fanfics too). Kataang is the official couple but they aren't written well, they have an obnoxious fanbase that lacks talent, and Bryke are insufferable about their OTP. All of it just makes Kataang so thoroughly unlikeable to me.
To be honest romance is one of the few things avatar wasn’t great at writing, I agree the best ship was sukka but even that felt pretty undercooked, which is pretty telling for the rest of the ships
Sokka genuinely is one of the best characters in the show, as well as the Avatar universe. Growing up, I’ve always loved Zuko and co, but Sokka over the years has become possibly my favorite character in the Avatar universe due to his charm, comedic timing, relatability, sincerity and so much more. I’m glad I watched this video, because it reminded me of why I love this character so much, thank you, SarcasticChorus, thank you for making my Tuesday good.
Funny enough one of the top ships that appear if you search up Sokka will be him and Zuko. Boiling Rock really cemented that for people even though it was also when Suki came back into the picture. Man just had too much game in the show and I think the fact that it wasn't a focus made it work better than anything they ever actually planned out. But the idea of Zuko and Suki getting together after the Mai breakup always intrigued me, mostly cuz they also left Zuko's baby momma a mystery. They made sure two of the second generation characters had no known parent so people could theorize and then never clarified whether or not the theories were correct or not.
I don't even ship Zukka, but I find it hilarious how you avoided the ship throughout the video while lampshading that fact. Also, would love to hear your thoughts on MaiLee, please! 🥺
Sometimes it feels like the writers decided to make the entire show serious and plot-driven but then said "wait, where should we put the actual good comedy and romance?" and then remembered *"Oh right, we have Sokka"*
Producers: The Equalists are wrong, non benders aren't look down upon. Also Producers: We want to have a mystery over what happen to Sokka and Suki but everyone else's fate in the Aang gang is confirmed.
Great vid, but It just took me all these years to realise the scene whith Sokka and Han's beef at the armory was a literal metaphor: they have an axe to grind with eachother. Dunno it just made me chuckle a little. God I love this show.
Honestly, with how solid Sokka and Suki's relationship is in the show, I can't imagine them not being together by the end. Suki gave Sokka the proper humbling needed to actually be dateable and start his progression as a better fighter. Meanwhile, Sokka gives Suki a chance to relax and be a bit of kid, somethiing she puts off when she's acting as a warrior. Besides, despite trying to suggest otherwise, Zuko and Mai are endgame regardless of relationship turmoil bullshit, and everyone else is already set, so Sokki/Sukka wasn't in any real danger. I feel that they were planned something in Korra, but with the writing of the latter being what it is, they somehow ended up being shafted. Personally, I think they married and either had kids or didn't, whether it be due to decision or medical issues I couldn't say.

There is an ongoing popular ATLA fanfiction called *Gladiator* were Sokka becomes Azula’s warrior for the arenas and later the two enemies become lovers. It is written by Seyary-Minamoto. My recommendation is you check it that starts from chapter 1 to 356. You’re gonna love it! 🐺 🐉 ❤️🔥
13:57 “Self-afflicted wounds that the original just doesn’t have” is still the most accurate way to describe every adaptation of ATLA thus far. Goes to show what happens when the writers who can’t even understand what *works* in it think they’re good enough to identify let alone fix what doesn’t.
There’s one bending style that aang never learned because the only teacher he had was pulling too hard. That is the art of BACKBENDING and sokka was a master XD
In my head canon, we never meet one of Sokka's grandchildren in Legend of Korra because he had so many grand children that if someone said "I'm a grandchild of Sokka", Korra would have just said, "Yeah, you and one out of four people in the South". Between ATLA and LoK, the Southern Water Tribe had a huge surge in population. I like to think that Sokka is responsible. He had lots of kids and his kids had lots of kids.
Sokka may not have had any bending abilities but he made up for it with Rizz. He had Suki and Yue in the palm of his hand, and even Ty Lee and Toph lusting after him for a little while.
I forget where but in some canon piece of literature for this series Sokka is retelling the story of how he and Toph took down the fire nation fleet at the end of season 3, but he completely forgets that Suki was there and that she was the one who did half the work. And Toph being the one who reminds of this
38:30 Of cause Ty Lee is faced by all these people about to die. But I'm very certain she cares more about Zuko then Sokka. Ty Lee is just a flirty person and her remarks to Sokka are just playfulness. Zuko and Ty Lee aren't close, but they grew up together. Ty Lee empathises with Zuko and claims that she knows him. The idea that she doesn't know him upsets her a bit. Zuko insulting her as a circus freak brings her to tears, while Katara saying that would never hit that hard.
(is that just me or that guy kinda cute😳) doesn't seem just an act of playfulness , it was pure attraction, but anyways I like to ship ty lee with both sokka and zuko, cause I think ty lee had a thing for both of them, but sokka clearly was not interested in her and zuko scolded at her so bad shows he clearly doesn't like her
@7mad211 Yes, she was attracted to Sokka I agree. But my point is that the bond she has to Sokka is still way weaker then the bond she has to Zuko. Not in the sense of romantic compatability or shipping, but considering how much she cares about about theses two characters at that point of the story.

Eh, but those weren't major characters. Sokka's fate is pretty important!
I don't think so, I just think they're lazy and haven't thought about it yet. For how much I love ATLA and its universe, I really hate how the creators of the show talk about some characters and how condescending they are to their audience when asked valid questions.
Remember when Sokka performed poetry in the Tales of Ba Sing Se?
Ofc
Saka performing poetry for the tales of Ba sing se was like watching Beast boy perform in the teen titans Japanese movie were he was doing karaoke!! It was so good I have always loved the goofy characters
I saw a fun/sad fan theory that the reason Toph became chief of police is because originally, yes it was Suki who was supposed to fill that role. However, because she died early, Toph took up that role because they had become so close to each other over the years.
I have literally never heard of that theory before, & I absolutely adore it. Headcanon accepted.
Yeah i rlly love the trio of Suki, Sokka, and Toph.
You can see in the comics why she took up that role
Sokka gets to be the parallel to so many characters. He and Katara are such interesing foils for Zuko and Azula. Being the less powerful older brother to a prodigy sister, growing into the role of a leader that was given but not earned at the beginning of the show, the swordplay, the different brand of daddy issues. Azula and Katara are both considered the pride of their people, able to master rare bending techniques with relative ease, and a defining moment for both of them is the loss of their mother.
You're cooking that's so true. The amount of parallels with these 4 characters is crazy.
Omg, you're so right!

Very well put together breakdown of Sokka's love interests and ships. I'm glad you'll mention Zukka another time.

And also why they never establish two men who bang Toph (there's probably more, but I mean who make her pregnant)

(If you hadn’t already done a video or two about Hunter/Willow I’d suggest that because Hunter is absolutely the fandom bicycle of the Owl House fandom and it’s hilarious)
He’s done one already

Sokka at the beginning of the first season: "I'm literally the best."
Sokka toward the end of the final season: "I have so much to learn."
Sokka grew, really grew, and never backslid on it in any noteable way, just pure respect for that.

Sokka, the ladies man of the Aang Gang😎
It's actually the GAang🤓

There’s one bending style that aang never learned because the only teacher he had was pulling too hard. That is the art of BACKBENDING and sokka was a master XD
Leaving out Zukka is such a power move
In my head canon, we never meet one of Sokka's grandchildren in Legend of Korra because he had so many grand children that if someone said "I'm a grandchild of Sokka", Korra would have just said, "Yeah, you and one out of four people in the South".
Between ATLA and LoK, the Southern Water Tribe had a huge surge in population.
I like to think that Sokka is responsible. He had lots of kids and his kids had lots of kids.
Loved the video! Personally I like to headcannon that Sokka, Suki, and Toph became a throuple at some point and eventually split one way or the other.
Sokka may not have had any bending abilities but he made up for it with Rizz.
He had Suki and Yue in the palm of his hand, and even Ty Lee and Toph lusting after him for a little while.
Good work with fixing the audio issues :)
i had the BIGGEST crush on sokka when i was little and never understood why people didn't like him as much a zuko
You’re going to go through *every* Zuko-ship? You must have the patience of a saint.
I forget where but in some canon piece of literature for this series Sokka is retelling the story of how he and Toph took down the fire nation fleet at the end of season 3, but he completely forgets that Suki was there and that she was the one who did half the work. And Toph being the one who reminds of this
Nice to see he fixed the double voices.
I still think its really really cute that Toph had a huge crush on Sokka. I hope in the epilogue she lived a happy life.
