    Beautiful music and excellent music theory teaching.
    A gentle request/suggestion: in addition to chord relationships in a key (scale harmonisation I think?), as requested by another commenter, it would be wonderful to have Gracie's take on simple modulations to other keys, or middle 8s, etc. when songwriting.

    I am also an ex-professional ballet dancer as well as being a musician. I have had many, many, many different teachers over the years. One thing I have always believed is that a good teacher can take an otherwise obscure idea and explain it in such a way that the student gets it. One teacher can "explain" things one way, another can "explain" the SAME THING in a different way. And then one teacher comes along and explains it in a way that makes the light bulb go on.

    I prefer watching your videos Ma'am Gracie. Your way of explaning everything was so systematic and I was able to digest the whole video and to apply it whenever I practise playing guitar. I already did watch your previous video about circle of 4ths and fifths; it was simpler yet I was able to to grasp and understand the whole concept of it, dissimilar to other videos I had watched, they were all perplexing for me. I'm hoping to see this kind of videos of you in the future to help me and others to improve way we play our instruments and most importantly upgrade the level of our knowledge about these concepts.. Thank you so much..

      F# minor is the natural minor of the A major scale aka Aeolian mode. If you, for instance, begin the scale and keep it as home base for you progression on the D of the A major scale you would be playing whats known as the D lydian. If you know your intervals, each interval is associated with its own particular mode. More importantly is understanding and associating these modes to the tonal qualities they all offer. Not to mention the modes of more exotic or complex scales like the double harmonic major. Its a rather simple, not easy, concept. Good luck, and continue learning!

    Of course you were probably not even a thought from your parents minds back years ago when I could have learned something about music theory. I actually learnt relative minors back in the mid 80s from a keyboard player I was in a band with in Germany. He was an amazing musician and really helped me to have an appreciation for theory as a means to communicate with other musicians. You on the other hand just explain it so easily to understand. It depends on melody or chords?

    • @GracieTerzian
      @GracieTerzian  3 года назад +3

      Hey Alex! Yes you can definitely use notes and chords outside of the key :). We do that all the time in music. As long as it sounds good, it's cool :). We learn about the chords and notes inside of keys so we can understand how they're functioning because we can use it to our advantage... but the sky is the limit. And most songs don't stay within the key the entire time. Songs temporarily go to other keys all the time. So don't restrict yourself :)

      @@GracieTerzian Thanks for your time to typing those words Gracie :D I tried to learn music about 1 year ago and write some melody in DAWs, for a beginner, I think scales and modes are really fun, and also, a little confused. I Googled some questions about scales and modes, and most answers are like you just said: You can do whatever you want to. Does it means: the purpose of learning scales and modes is to break it? Because when I open my DAW, I realize change keys in a melody is not that easy, always feel wired, and if I stay in a key, feels right, but bluhbluh really gets boring sometime. Well I think there are too many I should learn.
      Thanks again for your reply, have a nice day!

    Or play off the 6th scale degree of the major scale as the tonic. I tend to see every scale through a minor lens. I started playing guitar as a child of late 80's metal/hard rock and I obviously was exposed to Aeolian early on. As a result, I see the fretboard in Aeolian. F Lydian, for example, to me is A Aeolian. When I'm playing E Mixolydian or G Phrygian I see F# Aeolian and C Aeolian. It's interesting how the mind remembers patterns. Great lesson!
    All the best from the Bay Area.

It would be practical since we are on the subject of scales. What do you think? I know some of my students are having a hard time assigning which finger goes with what note on specific keys. I usually write the fingering on the staff above the note. Maybe I am teaching it wrong. You're help would be greatly appreciated. Now I can refer them to your video.

    I don't understand the relationship between chord progressions and scales. If I change a chord does that mean I am changing the scale or am I only playing chords that live in a single scale?

    • @GracieTerzian
      @GracieTerzian  3 года назад

      This is a very difficult question to answer in a comment because there is so much to say when it comes to this subject. Chord progressions are a series of chords played in a certain order. Scales can be associated with specific chords, in the sense that you could play the notes in a certain scale over a certain chord. There are tons of different scales you could play over any given chord. The context of the chord in a chord progression can open other possibilities and change what notes from what scales you might play over it. Sometimes there are chord progressions where you can play notes from one scale over the entire chord progression and it will sound good. Other times, you might need or want to change the notes/scales you are playing when there is a chord change. Basically, in the question you asked, both scenarios could be correct and possible. I will try to address this in a video later because it’s a good question, just hard to explain in a comment.

      Hm for theory books I usually recommend ones based around piano because I think it's good to first learn the basics of theory on piano, and then later apply it to the guitar. Many other guitarists I know recommend doing this as well. Because the piano lays out the notes in a great way visually so it's good for learning the basics. If you want a place to start, check out the Fundamentals of Music Theory by Keith Snell. It is a whole series of books with different levels, but start with the preparatory level. Then move on to level 1, 2, 3, etc...
