I am just about ready to start working on the minor scales, so this video was prescient! I had forgotten the trick I learned last year to identify the relative minor scale name that is associated with the major scale on the circle of fifths, so I had to work it out manually. For those who don't know...you look at a major scale, and move down three half steps, and that is your note name for the relative minor scale. It has the same sharps or flats as the major scale, it just begins in a different place. So, if you are in C, then count down.. B...B flat...and A. So the relative minor scale of C major is A minor. It's all about the interval distance patterns that lead to our perception of scales and modes. Learning music is very much like learning a language. There is SO much to discover. Gracie is a real treasure for all of us who are on that journey.
For a person who never picked up a guitar until a year ago.....you have opened up a door that is so amazing....thank yo much as you're the best teacher ever
Dadgum Gracie my dear, this makes perfect sense now! If I keep on attending your classes I might just understand what I've been doing all these years! Thank you doll this old dog is learning new tricks!
Thank you, Gracie! For many older learners, memorising scales is really hard. The genius who first spotted this relationship has blessed us all with her/his inspiration!
The other pattern that I have found that helps me a lot is BEADGCF FCGDAEB Find the Bead it shows up everywhere. The other thing that you mentioned in another video is the play one, skip one which gives you chords and staff notation: CEGBDFA which is equal to 1,3,5,7,9,11,13 which is so simple, I have been studying and struggling with this for 5 years, thank you so much for your effort and teaching style!
Gracie, your lessons have been of immense help to me. I have been playing the guitar for a while. You are one of the the best teachers of Music Theory I have come across in RUclips. I always look forward to your lessons and keep them saved. Thank you for your service. We need teachers like you. ♥
The lessons you share are, without exception very valuable, but I have come to the conclusion that the unique manner in which they are taught is what makes them unparalleled. More than impressive...
I wish youtube had existed when I was young and learning the guitar. And it would have been great had there been a you back then on youtube. Love your lessons, love your music.
Your videos are great! I self learned guitar and eventually became decent at soloing, but never learnt theory. I always thought that music theory is boring and useless but your videos made me change my mind!
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and really appreciate your easy to follow method. I will be pointing people to your channel that want to learn theory. I also really enjoyed your other videos on the various types of triads and minor scales. Cleared up some missing information for me. Thank you.
Absolutely terrific! Never thought I'd ever learn to figure out Major scales...now I understand how to thanks to your video of Major scales...AND NOW a similar "simple method" to accomplish that task with Minor scales...thank you! Your videos and supporting pdf files are well worth the price of admission! 👍🏽👍🏽🙏🏽.
Just Brilliant! Once again Ms Gracie you have helped make music theory transparent rather than opaque. Hugely valuable to those of us who really want to understand what we are playing, but didn't have the benefit of formal schooling. I am so grateful for your marvelous teaching.
Thank you for the lesson Gracie, it's always a pleasure to hear from you. I hope you, Audrey and the rest of the band have a great show on Friday, please post some footage of the event if you can :)
Gracie, I think teaching is your natural element, you seem to have a wonderful ability to make everything seem easy. If I had teachers like you as a kid I may well have turned into a genius, instead of an idiot!!!!😊
Thanks Gracie. I'm a bass player and mostly read from the bass clef but of course this is super relevant to know the arpeggio notes in major and minor scales. Good stuff!
When I learned major and minor scales, I never once heard anyone talk about this approach. Anyone who says they’ll never remember a scale, tell them about this and the light bulb will turn on haha, It’s so cool.
Really cool , I started music theory in 8th grade and now I'm 63 . Every day I have some aspect of theory running thru my brain. This was a cool tip and really helpful.
Great review for me! My Gracie Terzian School of Music notebook is coming right along! I'm printing or writing down every lesson. I have 18 divider tabs now! And moving right along, lesson by lesson. Thanks again, Gracie!
Gracie, Unparalleled content as usual! Thanks so much. I had to get out my hand drawn circle a couple of times, pause the video, study, and then it soaked in and I caught up! 😊
Ironically was confusing my kid trying to teach her this a week ago but this is much simpler than how I was goin about it thank-you...I think IL have her watch this rather than trying to reiterate...
I stumbled on your videos by accident…… it was a “happy” accident, as you’ve finally made the circle of fifths and how it’s used clear. You are a wonderful teacher, making music theory far clearer for me that ever before!!😊
thank you so much !!! I love your teaching style. Ive been wondering forever about why one minute a note can be a flat next a sharp and you cleared it up in about half a minute.my brain just had huge wall fall down and i feel like floating around the room lol thanks again.please keep posting.
That is a very helpful video as I still struggle with knowing the minor scales. Thank you, Gracie ! Another thing I thought whilst watching, which helped me here, is that they all add up to 7 - if you are struggling to remember the harder one then : The Fs = 3 sharps / 4 flats (total of 7). The Ds = 1 flat, 6 sharps. The Bs = 2 sharps, 5 flats. Hope it helps someone. It made sense to me, anyway! 😆
Thank you, Gracie! I think I'm more or less getting the Circle of 4th/ 5ths down, and now its easier for me to start seeing these kinds of relationships. I appreciate the way you explain things in a concise and sensible manner. It helps a lot
Hi Gracie..as usual you are amazing with your lessons...You are doing a wonderful job by arousing people like us to engage in learning music consistently.. Thanks Gracie...
this carefully and perfectly illustrates victor wooten saying how sharps and flats always add up to 7 in the "music theory is simple" video as well as how useful the concept of enharmonic equivalents is. no more "well, E# is just nonsense, music theory just makes stuff up" now you still have to put in the work and memorize your 6 keys (instead of 12) but at least you know there's a logic to it, which helps connect the dots and make em stick
Thank you Gracia,,,your teachings and ur methods are really helpfull,,you have expand my concept of music theory that before I was not able to comprehend,,,keep up ur good work,
Gorgeous redhead and music theory…subscribed!! Another “trick” to memorizing keys is basically what you’re saying but another way to look at it is the rule of 7…if G major has 1 # 1+6 is 7 Gb has 6 b’s D major has 2 #’s 2+5=7 Db major has 5 b’s etc etc
Great job music is so much like math . But with music it is so much more it creates a strong emotion connection to everything we do . There is so many way to understand its meaning thank you for unlocking some ways of understanding this expression.
I'm climbing the learning curve on music theory and love your videos. This one was very helpful, too. This approach seems easier to me. To figure out the accidentals to a minor scale, I usually just derive the relative major key, which can be discovered by looking a minor 3rd up from the root of the minor scale (e.g. An F# minor scale will have the same key signature as an A major scale -- "A", being a minor 3rd up from "F#"). This way, I only need to know the key signatures of the major scales (and only half of them). This seems to work out.
I Attended The Guitar Institute of Technology now called Musicians institute and I like her teaching and Explanation Better , More relaxing also, well done indeed , Your good you = yes you are ! Your Good !!! Guitarist Trevor Reed
Thanks , all your videos are impressive one can really f e e l that you dearly wish to make it clear and understandable for the student and can learn new aspects
It is so good you are teaching others to learn how to play minor keys. This is good spirit . may the our Savior Jesus add to you more and bless you. Thanks.
You could actually raise a half-step from a sharp key to another sharp key with the same tonic letter, or you could lower from a flat key to another flat key, but that would however lead to a theoretical key, in which one or more double-sharps or double-flats would be present in the key signature, so it’s not usually practical to use.
Another clear and concise lesson that makes sense of things for me. Thanks, Gracie! Beyond the scope of this lesson, I am curious about how harmonic and melodic minors are described in music notation key signatures. Specifically, is the natural minor used in the key signature, and then accidentals applied throughout the piece to indicate harmonic or melodic minor? That's my guess, anyway, since we hear so much about the major and minor keys derived from the circle of 4ths/5ths. Cheers!
Great video - why is Fm below the circle to remember but F#m is in the circle? Trying to understand why every 'natural key' letter is above the line but Fm is not.
God bless you Gracie. However, I found this video a tiny tiny bit confusing. I just prefer to try and count back 3 semitones to form the minor scales i.e. A flat major is F minor and A major equal to F# minor. E flat major is equal to C minor and E major is equal to C# minor. G major is equal to E minor. B flat major is equal to G minor and B major equal to G sharp. F sharp major is equal to D# minor. C sharp major is A sharp minor with a raised 7th making a double sharp on G for harmonic and F and G double sharp for the melodic ascending only. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks again and good night from Ireland.

A clever way to determine minor scales related by the same note. Clearly and concisely explained. Nice job.
