      @@GracieTerzian I assume that the reason the I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii^0 chord progression "sounds" similar to the diatonic key is is derived from is due the chord sound like the root note it's made of? That is, there is a kind of interval formula for the chord progression that "resembles" the diatonic key it is derived from?

      She is a very good tutor for sure. I know a fair amount of music theory but I must say I started to break the rules almost right away when I was a rock guitarist. The whole idea was NOT to always follow the rules, and catch cliches before they became song parts. But actually Gracie is explaining the “Western” way of musical systems so that you have at least a template for having a song written pleasing to “Western” ways. Just one more thing, I’ll be gone; many great musicians would try to recreate sounds in nature, even industrial noises., or WW 2 sounds. Anything you hear is a note or whatever.

    Thank you for finally providing me with the foundation I've always wanted! Your lessons cement all the "ivory" structures I've built throughout my years of love for music! To all who come and read. *This* lesson, Diatonic Chords of Major Keys, is, to my mind, the definitive first brick of a foundational theory. Simple, easy to understand, and the one I have looked for and longed for. The one that *I* needed to begin to build on a lifetime of improv that until now had been filled only with the love of a language understood solely with my heart, ears and hands... and now, finally, my mind... eventually! ;-)
    From the first time I touched a school piano when I was six and played Mary Had a Little Lamb by ear and the cheap two-octave air organ with button chords my mother bought, I've been "improving" on a keyboard. But the true beginnings of this love came as an 11-year-old boy delivering newspapers. One day, doing my first monthly collections, I knocked on the door of an older woman, my customer, whom I could hear playing what I later discovered was her two-tiered Hammond Organ with all the pull stops of a full orchestra, replete with double foot pedals. My intense curiosity as I stood at the door generated her invitation to see it. The organ dominated the door side of her double-wide living room! She turned it on and let me "play." From that first day, and once a month after that while I delivered her paper, she taught me what I have since learned were the fundamentals of diatonic and minor chord building but without theory. All of which has given me years of improv pleasure building chords, then keys, and then from the intuitive Key of C, the foundation of all keys and a lifetime of musical improv without the names, numbers or rules of theory. Books I bought, and abandoned, lost in confusion, I built a lifetime of music and playing with only my hands to echo what I could hear or play with my heart.
    Then I found you and your site Gracie! I am now 70 years old and finally fleshing out the theoretical foundation of a lifelong yearning! It's never too late to learn! :-)

    Gracie, I found and have loved your teaching videos for music theory. And today, for the first time, I heard you sing. What a beautiful voice. How special that you are sharing what you know and love with others. Thank you! Also saw your sweet kiddo - Aw my heart. As an auntie to littles, I appreciate the joy they bring. I'm reviewing and I love the way you teach and how diligent you are to explain. Also, although I like your natural voice, here 12:17, here 13:35, here 16:49 and here 32:17, I had a lot of fun, I loved that you edited the video with that voice acceleration, it sounds great on you. I discovered that I also like that little voice. If you keep using it I will enjoy it in future videos ... Thanks Gracie Terzian

    Pretty cool lesson. I remember when I was young jamming with a guy that loved to call out a "ii-V of the ii-V". Got a crash-course in following changes during those sessions.
    Keep up the good work. Killer voice as usual.

    Oh have to take a break too much info...how to know the major scales ? By memory? In order to move forward?

    • @GracieTerzian
      @GracieTerzian  3 года назад +2

      Haha information overload!!! It's good to take breaks and not overwhelm yourself.
      So, ultimately yes, you want to have your major scales memorized. This takes time and lots of repetition. HOWEVER, you don't need to memorize every single major scale at once. You can start with just one or two major scales. Start with the easier ones like C major, F major, or G major. Then move on to D major and A major. etc...
      Don't let the feeling of "oh goodness, how will I ever memorize all of these?" overwhelm you. I remember feeling that way when I first started learning music. First off, you don't need to have every major scale memorized at first to play. You can first spend time playing music in simpler keys such as C major, F major, G major, D major, A major, etc. There is no need to be playing a song in a crazy key like C# major or Cb major when you first begin working on this stuff. But I do believe that having a grasp of your major scales/keys will really make a lot of other things in music theory begin to make more sense. It's the foundation for so much.
      In order to figure out the notes in a major scale, you can always google search what they are (hahaha), or you can count up in whole and half steps in the pattern WWHWWWH. OR you can start figuring out the notes in major scales using the circle of fifths which is what I recommend using. That is what helped me begin to memorize my major scales. For instance, if you can't remember what the sharps and flats are in the scale, you can draw out the circle of fifths (or even better: try to visualize it in your head by memory) and figure out what the sharps and flats are in the scale. I have a video about how to create the circle of 5ths that you can check out in my music theory video playlist. I hope this helps!!
