First time I understood why there are different minor scales. You are the best teacher on You Tube......and the best music professor I have ever had. So many professors assume we understand all this. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining leading tones, so many music theory teachers assume people know terms and things that they don't know which confuses them. It would be great if you could also do more "what does this sound like" while explaining so there is more context like you do with the chords. That really helps people like me who know the sounds of things but can't always hear them in our head because we haven't memorized them yet.
Ms. Terzian, you obviously have a natural love for music that translates into a natural ability to communicate the beauty and treasure that music beholds. You are over the top amazing...Thank You!
Hi Gracie..i want to thank you for giving your time to the music world of dreamers...i am relatively new to the music world and i really appreciate the educational information you share....i have been learning how to play harmonica and surfing the internet for tips.....your teachings are helping me too understand music notation and much more....so i wanted you to know there are people like me that never understood how it works and you are the missing like for me...i have been teaching myself to play for many years but could get no where...you are helping me tremendously with my understanding music..thankyou and i am looking forward to more music clinics from you...😎
I used to think I was a dummy with music theory. But I’ve been forcing myself to look at diatonic chords of all the keys (so far I’m almost done with the major keys) and I was able to understand everything in this video. Thank you! I love your style of teaching!
👏 👏 Very well explained, i love the logicical, mathematical component of music structure which I used to work out the diatonic's of all the major keys and after this excellent explanation I now understand how to work out all the diaotonic's for the three types of minor keys, my piano teacher just keeps going step by step starting with the (i-iv-v-i) minor progressions without explaining how I go to that point, the leading tone from the dominant to the tonic now makes much more sense, tutors must not underestimate a students ability to grasp the more in-depth concepts of musical structure, this tutorial gets a 5 🌟 plus from me, thank you.
Thanks for such a clear explanation Gracie! I really like the way you approach topics in a very simplistic manner it truly flows from your great personality and musicianship.
If it wasn't you, I'd never have got through. The patterns you uncover with your presentations are so exciting and really help to break down the complexity into bite size portions. I will be working through this again and again I am sure but I really got it first time😅
Just recently found your channel and I am in love with all your amazing content. You make understanding these music theory concepts simple and fun! I feel like I've learned so much just in the past week! Great work 😀
Thank you a lot. Finally get a better understanding of why there are different minir scales and how they are kinda not reserved from another. In my head I am just waiting for the 7th chords and I think it really is that 4rth triad on top. But it‘s crazy, I started playing guitar when I was 9, now I‘m 23. this year I started going more into theory, got into the diatonic chords of c major and a minor. And now I am realizing Dominant chords are a thing too. I thought I had it with minor7, maj7, 7 and diminished7 chords but there it comes, a dominant chord. Almost a shame because I want to be a jazz musician. Gods of Jazz, please tell me when I am ready to clIm higher dimensions of music. However, you wanted a comment, here is mine. Much love and thank you a lot!
Thank you for this great exposition of a subject that I've never really understood. I've been playing guitar off and on since 1965, but didn't get serious about music theory until covid came along and I had some time to kill. I've learned a lot from various sources, but only now understand why there are multiple minor scales for a key and why I've been confused about what the diatonic chords can be. That said, I would have had trouble following you absent a previous clear understanding of scale degrees and how to construct chords, but I'm sure that your earlier videos cover all of that.
Never had a good explanation of why the harmonic minor may have developed before so thanks for that. I was hanging on my seat waiting for a similar explanation for Melodic, maybe next time?? Thanks
Once again a great Lesson Gracie. While I was listening to the main body of your video I had 2 burning questions. Firstly can you mix these in a song. You answered it at the end with that fantastic George Harrison song. It makes perfect sense now. The second is I was thinking OMG what about the 7ths. Cant wait for that. Once again. Great Lesson. 10 out of 10 as usual. I've looked of loads of You videos on Musical Theory. I can honestly say that you are No 1, in my opinion
Gracie, many thanks for your in depth teaching. Can we get a video that deals on chords for beginners and in depth teaching on chord types, how to get/ recognize them
Excellent lesson, both in content and presentation. Keep up the good work. 👍 Just one tiny suggestion: if you place the microphone closer to your mouth, the recording will have less reverb from the room and thus your voice will be clearer to us listeners. 🎤 If you're afraid of knocking the microphone while moving around, a lapel mic might work better. BTW like you, I find that the richness provided by diatonic chords in the natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales is exquisite, especially given its simplicity. 🎶
Gracie, in your recent video, you discussed the use of the 13 diatonic chords that can be derived from the three minor keys. It got me thinking, when these chords are used in a composition, how do you determine the key in which the melody should be played? Can you provide some guidance or general rules about this?
@@GracieTerzian This whole business of diatonic chords is something I completely get when working our of a major scale. But, I have never understood how it works in minor tunes, and now I do. Much appreciated.

You explained George Harrison's song so well that you could have been a 7th Beatle. Thanks for doing such a great teaching. If The Beatles wrote everything in straight-out major keys, they probably would have been boring. No need for you to apologize.
My daughter and I were taught many years apart that the melodic minor raises the 6 and 7th ascending and lowers the 6 and 7th back descending how does this apply to the harmonized scale
Clear, practical, well-illustrated and very accessible to someone with a basic level of theoretical knowledge. Bravo!
Thank you so much!!

Wait, is a dominant seven chord just a C7 for example?
When I said dominant I meant augmented. That shit´s confusing
Yes C7 is a dominant chord. It’s full name is “C dominant 7” but people call it “C7 for short”
Exactly what I was looking for thank you so much ❤
