If you go back and look at the video footage of the first test, you will find that Ireland should actually have won the first game, even though South Africa were more dominant. Ireland never gave up and footage will show that the Cheslin Kolbe try should never have been awarded as James Lowe was in touch. Likewise, the footage will also show that Doris‘s try hit the ground in his hand over the line and was not held up. That’s a 14 point swing that’s the game. Then an Ireland B team, missing about 7 starters, went to Durban and physically beat up the World Cup winning, most experienced Springbok team ever, and did it with a man in the bin. The game is 80 minutes long. How are win in those 80 minutes doesn’t matter. South Africa were lucky to win any game in this series, not the other way around.

TMO helped big time in the first test as well and only won by 7. Our 9. 10, 12 need more variation in their kicking.
Ireland are a very well-oiled machine made to look super talented. The tightly continuous coaching team, Schmidt (made them an oiled machine), and Farrell (made that look super slick and talented) have been unbelievable, and it's hard to replicate that time and system, and therefore result. We can't imagine we'd be the same.
9s telegraph their box kicks usually, can we work a way to use blockers for the 9 in phase play for more innovative kicks in an attempt to address rush defence?
Yes, Jordie can bust it up the guts but we're also just seeing him get walloped sometimes. Vary it up.
Can the 10 or 12 or kicking wing be tight to 9 and kick close to where the rush defence start from? If you're the D and they kick to where you just were, maybe you'll be slightly hesitating or subsequently looking in the wrong areas?

As an England fan, you can't help but be delighted when NZ commentators solution is to go to the box kick. Boy have we taken it on that over the years. In all seriousness, two great games that bode well for both teams going forward. Test rugby seems to be in great shape with five highly competitive teams. November tests are great to look forward to. Thanks to NZ for a great tour.

It's not really new from Ireland though. They went after the NZ props when we toured there last year. It was just more of the same.
The real genius was in the players recognising the subtle difference that presented itself in the second test as opposed to the first. The Saffas had Kolisi as first defender after the Doris carry instead of Malherbe in the second test. Ireland played what was in front of them and postponed their intentions. They engaged Kolisi, took it through another phase and set as soon as they saw Malherbe fold from the blindside. It's brilliant because it's both structured and heads up rugby. Everyone knows who the target is and they know what they have to do to exploit him.
I'd back the NZ'ers to take something from it too. Malherbe can be slow to react if you force him to make a decision in space. NZ aren't backward when it comes to stuff like this. They've scored off deficiencies in our lineout defence in more than one game now. Made Ireland look silly in the process, crucially with Mo'unga at the World Cup. That's good analysis. They have to be watching.

On the other hand, the AB's has just been playing for 2 tests and only came together 10 days before the first one. Do you think that the English still have a lot of space to improve before the November game and will they be able to match the AB's potential to improve?

What Role was Schmidt offered? Was Schmidt even offered a role? Were the roles decided by Razor before/after Razor chose his team? Did Razor tell each of them who got what role or were the roles decided for each other by each other as a group? If Razor had 'preferred' Scott Hansen as his 9/10 coach would Tony Brown have taken another role? Would Scott Hansen been happy to let Tony Brown be the 9/10 Coach and taken the Outside Backs himself? Dunno.
Now that Jamie Joseph is back at the Highlanders, could we see a JJ & TB re-union as the ABs coach in years to come? Would JJ take on the role of Rassie if Rassie left & was offered the job? Will/would Vern Cotter & Joe Schmidt re-unite as per their Montpellier days? Will the likes of Clayton McMillan, Clark Laidlaw & the raft of other good/young coaches, both in NZ & plying their trade overseas, have a say in the future? A thing that the NZR certainly has over the other Unions is our conveyor belt of excellent coaches.

Tuipoloto is dominant around the field his ball carrying has been strong. Vai has also ben good and physical when he comes on. So right now barrett is performing as our no 3 lock. This is where Robertsons bias could cost the all blacks. Your captain needs to firstly always demand his position in the team that is why the public was behind savea. Right now either barrett is not demanding his position or cpataincy is to much. We do not want to be in the position again where caine was picked over the last 4 years ahead of form 7s.

And wow, that Kennedy Simon interview… great question Ross Karl; “What do you mean Rugby saved you?” The answer and attitude seems central to the Women’s game in NZ. It also seems in some contrast to the Men’s game and what it has become in the professional era. Hope we can sort that out.

Half back is a position that is there for the taking. I wasn’t convinced by either winger. I did think D Mac played particularly well considering he never really had quick service or good front foot ball. Sam Canes and Frizzels physicality on defence was sorely missed. I’m excited though to see the new guys get a crack and happy we got 2 wins against a solid English team.

Our kicking out of hand is just awful, and it puts us under pressure. Our short kicks are too inaccurate to be contestable, our territory kicks are too shallow and rarely find space, exits from out 22 are too shallow. The players we have are good enough, but they need to be less predictable on attack as it makes us easy to defend against. The rush defence is not new, and beating it is no secret. Short pass or offload once the defender is committed, kick in behind to turn the defenders, strong ball carriers to break the advantage line or draw in defenders to make space elsewhere, don't be predictable so the defenders have to think more etc.

My take on Pods with the use of Dummy Runners to break the gain line...(shown at 34:10 of the above vid)
While I like attractive rugby & good/smart moves, my take on the Dummy Runners, & it may require a Law Change, is that the first example should have been a penalty against Ireland for ‘blocking’ while the 2nd example of the use of a Dummy Runner was ‘fine’ as the SA #3 chose the wrong player to tackle, had his weight on the wrong leg & wouldn’t have been able to have made the tackle required. The SA #3 should have covered & tried to tackle the player who received the inside pass and left the Irish player he committed to tackling to SA’s Cover Defence (which was a tad missing in this instance in the 2nd example).
My reason for penalizing the first example, is once the Dummy Runner, Ciaran Healy, is ahead of the Ball Carrier or ahead of the Player who eventually receives the Ball & there is any contact on a Defender with intent or by accident, within a reasonable radius of the Ball Carrier and in the direction of where the Defender is taking into account which leg the Defender’s has his weight on, then that should be ruled as obstruction/blocking/crossing & a penalty/free-kick awarded to the Defence. In this example, Ciaran Healy pretends to not be changing his line, is slightly ahead of the player about to receive the ball, has a quick look to see where the SA #17 is, changes his shoulder/weight to his left & purposely bumps into SA #17 to ensure that there is no chance of SA #17 making a tackle. Even if the SA #17 couldn't make the tackle, the intent was to there by Ciaran Healy to prevent any tackle, shirt grab or ankle tap from being made.
Having said that, sometimes a Defender is penalized for tackling a Dummy Runner ‘off the ball, without the ball or early’ when the Defender had already committed to the tackle given the actions of the Ball Carrier & the Dummy Runner. The Defender doesn’t always have the time to react to the ball being passed & getting into position for a legal tackle nor does the Defender have the time to look-up from their tackle position to see if they have the ball or not & if required, pull out of the tackle, step aside & drop one’s arms to allow the Dummy Runner to proceed without any hindrance. Which way do you officiate? In favour of the offence or defence?
If in favour of the Defence, I suppose my idea would just lead the Defensive Line to become rigid/zonal as they wouldn’t need to track a Dummy Runner - just keep their line - but it would force the offensive/attacking side to be more creative.
So, in favour of the offence or defence or can there be a fair compromise? Not any interpretations, a Black & White Law please…

Love the rugby chat here lads. Question for the next Pod.. What I seem to notice is that people get all caught up with the performance of players from one or two games.. E.g. A player has one bad game and then they get written off as no good.. It seems the sample size many people are using when basing a judgement on players/teams peformance is tiny.. E.g. Findlay Christie maybe didn't make the impact in game 1 against England and he's dropped down the publics list of the halfbacks.....Ioane all of a sudden has calls to be shifted back to wing.... Beaudy has two great stints from sub and now he should be first five...New Zealand struggled against England for 2 games and all of a sudden England are right back up with the top four teams... It just seems like bad science to base a judgement off 1-2 games... What would you 3 on the pod consider a sufficient sample size for players/teams to make a well evidenced judgement on whether they have the ability/quality that's expected?

Question - Should Beauden Barrett start?
Answer 1 - If Perofeta is the 3rd 10/15 then yes. Only bring Perofeta on if the game opens up otherwise BB and DMac can both go 80.
Answer 2 - If Jordan is the 3rd 10/15 then no. Start Will Jordan who can open up the defense against any team, with BB to bring impact of the bench at either 10 or 15 depending on how the game is going and how DMac and Jordan are performing.

That could have easily been struck slightly worse, missed and the conversation would instead be completely around concerns for Ireland and their inability to hold a lead and close a game out.

As a neutral would tend to agree NZ have fallen behind a bit and some work to do. They seem one dimensional good from broken play but haven't really evolved to the same extent as SA. No doubt Razor will sort that very quickly assuming heads are not in the sand and thinking all is perfect at the moment.

Don't agree with those sentiments. Barrett was not performing that well at 10 last few years and stands out when there is space to use created by forwards, 9 and 10 doing their job well. Clarke is in form and fitness of his life, think he's going to be dominant
