I heard a story on this today. Ankiel told a bunch of what happened. After he went back to the outfield, he said he could throw a strike from 250' but not from 60'. What's being learned by sports science & medicine is that this is not mainly psychological, but neuromuscular. They've been wiring up athletes and musicians who have this happen. What they see is that certain muscles used in learned skills which have become automatic through extreme repetition, like pitching, suddenly begin misfiring, freezing, or over-activating. They've wired up golfers who've lost their games, and in different players they can see a lot of the same muscles misfiring. Anxiety can make it worse, but it's not just nerves. I'm glad Ankiel got to have a second life in baseball, I hope the sports medicine folks can keep learning more to help athletes who have this happen.

I say much respect for not giving up on the dream some of us call baseball. Baseball to me was always the most fun. I was truly more talented at football but I always enjoyed baseball much more. I think most of us who played always fantasized making it to the next level. There comes that time when you know that you have made it as far as you ever will. You hang on there as long as you can then progress backward. The hardest day is when you realize the next level is a dream that is not happening!

I remember everyone in Cardinal nation pretty much just giving up on him. It was almost like people wanted him to retire just so he wouldn’t have a mental breakdown. So when he started putting up massive offensive numbers in the minors it seemed like everyone was going, “Nooooo.... but, maybe he can do it.” Then, it seemed like we were just waiting for the perfect time for him to get a call up and it was pretty magical to see him back in the majors. When he hit that first home run back it was one of the very few times La Russa ever had a big smile. That should tell everyone how special it was.

This happened to me when I was trying out for my middle school baseball team. I prayed everyday for a year that I would make that team so when i got the yips during tryouts I completely freaked out and faked an arm injury. I had no idea that it ever happened to anyone else at the time. I’m kept faking my arm injury and my parents took me to see doctors and to physical therapy for years and never lifted my arm up over my head if front of anyone. About 15 years later I found out about the yips and I confessed to my parents that I was faking the injury. I haven’t thrown a baseball since those tryouts

I remember watching that playoff game at school before baseball practice with a group of us watching it in the coaches office and we were all completely baffled. Ankiel had a great season and then in the 3rd he just completely fell apart. Wish you had shown some of the pitches instead of still frames, but I'm sure it's copyright protected. When they sent him down to AAA Memphis, it wasn't like he was going somewhere where he wouldn't be seen. The Memphis Redbirds, at that time, were either leading in minor league attendance or ranked 2nd. I live just outside of Memphis and used to go to the AAA games regularly. Autozone Park is an exceptional stadium, built specifically for expansion in case MLB ever decided to put a major league team there. So he was still pitching in front of crowds of 10,000 people or more.

The way he pronounced certain words and read what he was reading out loud wrong. Sounded like he pulled an Ankiel and once he knew he was being recorded, he read the words in the wrong order and everything else. 🤣

So I haven't been into baseball since the late 90s. I played in Asher Oklahoma. If you don't know you better Google that shit. But I just quite caring. I have decided to get back into becoming a fan baseball again. I like ncaa football and the okc thunder, but baseball is only the sport that hasn't become political. It's my last safe sport. I'm coming in late in the season. Thanks for the great channel.
Maybe make a who's who and what teams are what video for new people coming back to baseball. Other then Trout I know no one. Help a new/ old fan out.
