The New York Yankees had the fourth pick and they, too, took a catcher. This one was from Canton, OH and his name was Thurman Munson. The Astros had the first overall pick in 1992 and one of their top scouts *pleaded* with the top brass to select a kid named Derek Jeter. Houston took 3B/OF Phil Nevin instead, thinking the college prospect would be easier to sign and couldn't use college as leverage. The scout that wanted Jeter resigned. The Yankees lost the draft pick they could have used on Trout because they signed Teixeira. However, Teixeira helped them win the 2009 World Series. The lost draft pick was the penalty.
The Angels were going to draft Mike Trout with the 24th overall pick, which was their own, but since the pick they got from Teixeira was consecutive to theirs, they drafted their second choice, Randall Grichuk, before Trout in order to knock Trout’s slot value down and make him an easier sign. Jackson recalls how his coach at Arizona State, Bobby Winkles, broke the bad news. “A day or two before the draft, Bobby Winkles sat me down and told me, ‘You’re probably not gonna be the No. 1 pick. I’d make the case that the Tigers not getting Cutch was good bc he would’ve just filled Maybin’s role in the Miggy deal and then it wouldn’t be such a good deal for Detroit since Cutch would’ve planned out
I would offer the 1971 draft as a bigger disappointment for Tigers fans. With the 11th pick that year, Detroit took light hitting shortstop Tom Veryzer. Four picks later, Boston got Jim Rice.
🟢 THIS ... was a standout vid, Doss; the RESEARCH ALONE was outstanding, and to see someone your age goin this deep into ball history is really impressive. Excellent work here. Take yerself a bow on this one, good sir. 👏👏👏👏✌️
baseball is a lot harder to pick than the other sports. the jump to mlb is the hardest, way too many variables to consider, especially pitchers, it's a huge adjustment. doc ellis once said, "it's easy (not really) to get the majors, it's hell to stay there."
That's most Rangers drafts. They're one of the worst franchises in all of pro sports. 1996-99, 2010-11, and 2016-17 are aberrations from their normal trends (outside of those years the only other times they were really in contention were 1974, 1993, and 2004).
The Indians choice of Beau Mills over Heyward is even more perplexing because Mills had flunked out of Fresno State and ended up at an NAIA school,a much lower level of competition.During that season he injured his throwing shoulder to the point he wasn't able to really play third base(like his father Brad Mills) anymore.Mills was just another in a series of really bad first round picks by the Tribe in the aughts.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cleveland_Indians_first-round_draft_picks
As a Phillies fan for all 67 years of my life, where do I begin? Just recent years.... 2016 Mickey Moniak, 1st OA - Passed on Nick Senzel, Ian Anderson and Cal Quantrill 2017 Adam Hasley 8OA - Doesn't matter who we passed on, kinda lousy draft so far 2015 Corneilius Randolph, 10 OA -Passed on Josh Naylor, Walker Buehler, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Austin Riley 2014 Aaron Nola - definite OK on that one 2013 - JP Crewford, 16 OA - Got us Jean Segura but passed on Tim Anderson (next round), Aaron Judge (I33!!!!!) 2012 - Shane Wilson 40 OA and Mitch Gullers 54 OA - Passed on Lance McCullers, (41) 2011 - Larry Greene 39 OA - Passed on Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Chafin, Michael Fulmer, Trevor Story, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell,. I guess it could be worse....
I don't think it was going to happen, though. I believe I've read in years past that people from the Angels have said they would have drafted Trout if they'd only had their own pick that year.
As a Mariners fan, I can say getting rid of Adam Jones and David Ortiz (I believe after their rookie seasons) was worse than Tulo. Not by much, but a little.
Oh man not even sure if the 2006 draft was the Pirates worst. You can certainly make a case for the 2002 draft when they were to pick first overall and decided to take Bryan Bullington whom I remember even at the time people said was at best a number 3 pitcher. He had an overall win-loss record of 1-9 with a 5.62 ERA for his career. They passed on Zack Greinke among others to take Bryan.
We may have missed out on Utley. But we beat the breaks off of philly his entire career there and we won 2 world series and appeared in 4 after he was drafted. So he's truly the one that got screwed. I would have loved to seen him in a cards uniform though.
Honestly could’ve just recapped the 2009 draft tbh. With exceptions for the Nationals (who picked Stephan Strasburg), Brewers, Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, and Cubs (all of whom had their picks after the Angels)
If Kershaw had played for the Pirates he wouldn't have been Kershaw, the Pirates were notoriously awful at developing pitchers back then and still aren't great.
@@medguy12 The entire draft is hit or miss. And this is just one example, by Cleveland or anyone else. This is another "every team's worst mistake" which ignores the vast majority of baseball history. Betts was just the first name that came to my mind, but I could have gone for 1974, when the Indians took Tom Brennan with the 4th pick, and Dale Murphy went 5th. Or 1984 when the took Cory Snyer, with Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Al Leiter and Mark McGwire still on the board. And this isn't to pick on Cleveland, you could do this with every team. Pick a random year, and they're just about always there.
The Yankees resigned Mark Teixeira but had to give away their draft pick which the Angels used to get Mike Trout. (Just saying, could’ve put Trout in the yanks jersey like all the others in the thumbnail)
Remember the Angels had the 24th and 25th picks. They took Grichuck 24th cuz he would be cheaper to sign than Trout even tho the angels saw Trout as the better player. Who originally had that 24th pick? The Mets. They lost that to the Angels by signing K-Rod
Oriole's fan here, same goes for the O's. For a few decades now the O's haven't really churned out too many draft picks that go on to make it as stars the majors. Or even just as decent every day players for that matter. Our farm system, scouting/drafting, and overall player development have all been garbage for as long as I've been alive. Hope this "rebuild" brings some much needed changes on the field and behind the scenes.
You have been doing a great job Dawson. My further proof that your generation thinks the world began in 1985 because you seemed you didn't know who "Robin Yu(mumble)" is! YOW-NT. I umpired his son at Chaparral HS Scottsdale AZ. Super nice guy! Only two-time MVP at two different positions shortstop and Centerfield and yes before....1985. My theory proven. There WAS a world before 1985, kiddies.
Couple notes: I think Jeter should’ve been the Astros’ biggest mistake as well. The Reds at least had Barry Larkin (and would have him for the next ten seasons) so I give them a pass there. Jeter was also on Houston’s draft board, and they took future Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin. Astros scouting director Hal Newhouser (yes, 2 time AL MVP pitcher Hal Newhouser) was so distressed that he quit scouting entirely. Another reason why the Mets took Chilcott over Jackson was because they didn’t like the fact that Reggie had a white girlfriend. This was, after all, 1966. I’m not entirely certain the Yankees would’ve drafted Trout in 09. Sure it’s plausible, given that he was the only draftee to show up to Studio 42. But the Angels also had the number 24 pick. Maybe this would have forced them to do extra research instead of taking both Grichuk and Trout, and maybe they would have drafted Trout.
The Reds didn't need Jeter because they had a hall of famer at short named Barry Larkin. Of course, Jeter could be moved to 3rd or 2nd. The Astros have done just fine with 4 WS in 6 seasons. And no, Clemons is NOT the GOAT pitcher. Not even close. Good lord.
As for the Astros, their biggest draft mistake was taking Phil Nevin over Derek Jeter in 1992, and nothing else is really even close. Their head scout even resigned because they did not take Jeter.

@@benwise6517 me too but i just don't see the giant's logic here
@@ej3981 Yeah, it kinda slips from time to time. Yet they turn torture into titles.
Pablo was not a draft pick dude, he was an international free agent signee when he was 16 yrs old and was a catcher in the minors and when he first came up.
@@philobeddoe8342 he was still fat and still not in shape so there is not much of a difference but your right
I’d make the case that the Tigers not getting Cutch was good bc he would’ve just filled Maybin’s role in the Miggy deal and then it wouldn’t be such a good deal for Detroit since Cutch would’ve planned out
I would offer the 1971 draft as a bigger disappointment for Tigers fans. With the 11th pick that year, Detroit took light hitting shortstop Tom Veryzer. Four picks later, Boston got Jim Rice.
A little extra reaction on the dodgers and Clemens, 17 other teams passed on him too.
4:15 same can be said about the Astros the scout retired after they passed on Jeter
Makes you want to bang a trash can, yes?
The worse for the Tigers was drafting Matt Anderson #1 overall..
🟢 THIS ... was a standout vid, Doss; the RESEARCH ALONE was outstanding, and to see someone your age goin this deep into ball history is really impressive. Excellent work here. Take yerself a bow on this one, good sir. 👏👏👏👏✌️
If we're talking about all-time, passing on Barry Bonds was easily the White Sox's biggest draft blunder.
baseball is a lot harder to pick than the other sports. the jump to mlb is the hardest, way too many variables to consider, especially pitchers, it's a huge adjustment. doc ellis once said, "it's easy (not really) to get the majors, it's hell to stay there."
I'm a Texas Rangers fan and that draft mistake of there's is INSANE.
That's most Rangers drafts. They're one of the worst franchises in all of pro sports. 1996-99, 2010-11, and 2016-17 are aberrations from their normal trends (outside of those years the only other times they were really in contention were 1974, 1993, and 2004).
Thank you for making these videos I am totally lost right now without baseball it just sucks
You're welcome my guy, hopefully there will be baseball this year
The Indians choice of Beau Mills over Heyward is even more perplexing because Mills had flunked out of Fresno State and ended up at an NAIA school,a much lower level of competition.During that season he injured his throwing shoulder to the point he wasn't able to really play third base(like his father Brad Mills) anymore.Mills was just another in a series of really bad first round picks by the Tribe in the aughts.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cleveland_Indians_first-round_draft_picks
Over 20 teams whiffed on Trout. That takes about half the teams of the board right away
Still think the yankees would picked the signing of Teixeira and win the world series than drafting anyone with the 25th pick in the 09 draft
As a Phillies fan for all 67 years of my life, where do I begin? Just recent years....
2016 Mickey Moniak, 1st OA - Passed on Nick Senzel, Ian Anderson and Cal Quantrill
2017 Adam Hasley 8OA - Doesn't matter who we passed on, kinda lousy draft so far
2015 Corneilius Randolph, 10 OA -Passed on Josh Naylor, Walker Buehler, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Austin Riley
2014 Aaron Nola - definite OK on that one
2013 - JP Crewford, 16 OA - Got us Jean Segura but passed on Tim Anderson (next round), Aaron Judge (I33!!!!!)
2012 - Shane Wilson 40 OA and Mitch Gullers 54 OA - Passed on Lance McCullers, (41)
2011 - Larry Greene 39 OA - Passed on Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Chafin, Michael Fulmer, Trevor Story, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell,.
I guess it could be worse....
The new York yankees could have had mike Lowell but they traded him
Yea but David Wright is better
I have nightmares about trout getting drafted to the Yankees
THANK GOD!!.. That never happened. From a redsox fan
The Chicago Whitesox, with a pick they got from the NY Mets. Mets loved giving away draft picks back in the day.
Wow I wasn’t even subbed and this video only has like 6k views. A pleasant surprise :) Great video.
NO the worst mistake for tigers is Clayton Kershaw like what
Honestly could’ve just recapped the 2009 draft tbh. With exceptions for the Nationals (who picked Stephan Strasburg), Brewers, Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, and Cubs (all of whom had their picks after the Angels)
All teams that passed trout
Imagine a world where Lincecum plays for the Orioles and Kershaw for the Pirates, what weird world.
Needed Mad Bum, Pirates lost too many playoff games
If Kershaw had played for the Pirates he wouldn't have been Kershaw, the Pirates were notoriously awful at developing pitchers back then and still aren't great.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr Pirates were good at fixing old guys like Burnett and Liriano, but were ass at young pitchers with electric stuff.
Please do a video on the pittsburg pirates draft and what if........I would love to see the team they could have had. thank you
Good stuff bro!
If Jason Hayward is Cleveland’s biggest miss, then things aren’t going too bad.
In the 5th round of the 2011 draft, they picked a pitcher from UVA, Will Roberts, who never got AAA. Mookie Betts went 14 picks later.
@@mpc91 5th round is pretty hit or miss tbh. It sucks they missed out on Betts, but it’s not as though he was setting the world on fire as a prospect.
Bartolo Colon is the greatest pitcher of all time, please get this right in future videos
You have amazing baseball videos this is my favorite sport
thank you
Jayson Heyward, with a mod in his swing, could end up one of the best hitters in the game. He has too many moving parts in his swing.
Fernandez would probably still be alive if the brewers drafted him
When it's time to die it's time to die.. stupid statement here
@@dwaynehoward240 Not really, Miami gave him easy access to boats, which he eventually lost his life on.

Meh,...was kind of out of control himself, he though the world had to turn on his account...
This just goes to show the fact that drafting or signing players in general will always remain a calculated guess.
I’m a Dodger Fan, and that one just pierced my soul.
Same :(
As a Mets fan there is a lot to choose from for us lol
Just cause the Yankees would’ve had the pick didn’t mean they’d take trout
@@valonadili7031 True, because their scouting system is ass.
Lmao I live across the street from angel stadium and that intro for them had me dying
Jays passed on Clemens for Matt Stark.
What about everyone passing on Mike Piazza?
You missed the Yankees biggest draft mistake in 1983 they passed on Tony Gwynn to draft John Elway.
Couple notes:
I think Jeter should’ve been the Astros’ biggest mistake as well.
If the Cubs had drafted Ventura, he wouldn’t have charged Nolan Ryan. Worth it? Totally!
Good lord.
"Roger Clemons- greatest pitcher of ALL time..." ??? that's the funniest sh*t I've ever heard... 🤣
Nolan Ryan ....Hold my beer
As for the Astros, their biggest draft mistake was taking Phil Nevin over Derek Jeter in 1992, and nothing else is really even close. Their head scout even resigned because they did not take Jeter.
I’d love to see a video of all of Scott Boris’ busts!!
Loved the LA Angels introduction. 😅🤣
