    The sparkplug socket with slots was a brilliant idea.

    Thanks, dude. Been going back and forth between soft popups vs. aliners. These are much more roomy and camping-like. But the cranking part is problematic: all those cranks (dealbreaker) vs. notoriously faulty power lift systems. This $100 solution changes the game. And some Coachmen Clippers don't use poles for the beds either. Things are getting easier. Niiice, for this active but still over-60 guy.

    Just cranked up my 1999 Coleman Taos with drill you recommended.Worked great ! I was a little slow on the trigger pull; since the drill was a new purchase, but it worked fine. Used string like you suggested. Thanks for tip. First time in a while I cranked top up without shoulder pain afterwards.

    How much do you guess the roof of your camper weighs? Reason I ask is I am about to trade up to pop up with bigger roof and AC on top. I have Hitachi like yours with over 400 torque. Did great on little Coleman Taos.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  6 лет назад +1

      I couldn't guess the weight. I do know mine is quite heavy, with an AC unit on it and my drill raises it without a problem.

    Hi David - do you think an impact wrench would damage the camper crank instead of using a drill?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  2 года назад

      I would be afraid of using an impact for this. I could see the potential for breaking a cable.

      Google "hex drive socket adapter'. Make sure you get the proper drive size to fit your socket or get a variety pack, they're cheap and super useful. They are built for impact use but they will work with a drill.

    Harbor freight 1/2 inch electric impact wrench. 230 ft lbs of max torque @ $35 with a coupon. More than enough oomph to raise the roof at a bargain price.

    What do you do for power when none avail? What is amps on drill can it be run off of an inverter on your car?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  6 лет назад

      You would either need a powerful battery-operated drill ($300 or so) or an inverter that can deliver 9 amps AC or so.

    thanks for the idea. I did the same thing as I have an angle grinder and extra spark plug socket. We have a 92 coleman sequia that were waiting for the weather to break so we can go camping and try it out. I have a dewalt electric drill i will use but it doesn't have a restrictive torque setting. I'm afraid that if I push the trigger to hard causing it to spin really fast it would snap the cables. Are you just getting a feel for the torque because your video doesn't sound like your hammering away with the drill?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  6 лет назад

      You just have to be careful not to over crank the lifting mechanism. That's why I used a cord as an indicator to warn me that I was approaching full crank up. I am also careful not to force it up too fast, although I don't know if there is much risk of breaking a cable. Better safe than sorry though. Good luck and thanks for watching.

      mine was too heavy for my dewalt so today i purchased the one you have and it only raised it 3 inches and started smoking. Mine as a.c. as well but it is obviously much heavier than your pop up. Wish it would of worked out but looks like im manually doing it.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  6 лет назад +1

      If those two drills can't lift it I guess it back to manual. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

    Hi David, thanks so much for making this video. My husband and I have just bought our first pop up. It’s a 2006 Fleetwood Niagara. We went camping for the first time in it 2 weeks ago and loved it! However it has a manual roof crank and my husband has shoulder and back problems. We read that a drill can be used to raise the roof, but we have had a lot of trouble trying to figure out which socket to get. My husband is very handy and he could make one using the angle grinder as you’ve done. But we aren’t user what size spark plug socket to buy. You mentioned yours is 5/8 inch. Any chance you may know if that’s the correct size we need for ours? Or if not, how do we find that out? Googling hasn’t given us any clear answers unfortunately. Thanks in advance for your reply!

    • @TheOriginalMechanic

      I would just try inserting deep well sockets into the crank tube until finding the largest size that will fit. You could also measure the outside diameter of your hand crank and match it to a socket. My camper is the same year Fleetwood that you have so I would think yours would take the same size socket. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      They sell these Search under "slotted head drill adapter" and you should find one. Just make sure you get one that will fit the inside diameter of your crank tube.
