    I always thought that it was interesting how the horse armour thing played out in the end. It was so universally hated and mocked and still it made so much money that it caused its own trend. It sadly also feels like it also set an example for big gaming companies to sometimes to just ignore the player base and it can pay out massively.

      The psychology of it is super interesting. But the economics is weird too. Like the value of dlc is derived from the original value set by the developers.
      Because supply and demand doesn't come into it's value. As it's unlimited supply. So what makes them more or less valuable is it's rarity which comes from the price the developers set. Which is insane.
      If it's cheaper more people can afford but less will want it because it will be common. If it's more expensive less people can afford it. So more will want it.
      So it's this entirely rigged system where it's value doesn't actually come from the item itself. Or how many are available. It's comes from it's rarity which is set by the price they decide.
      They literally go "This is the one everyone will want. This is the one everyone will want and can't get, this is the one most people will want and can't get. This is the one some people will want and can't get, this is the one everyone will have and not care about"
      They are literally printing money

    • @jspres86
      @jspres86 7 месяцев назад +2

      They're not ignoring the player base if the player base buys whatever they're selling. It'd be a whole different story if no one bought it. They're a business, their first priority is to make money. Good ol' capitalism, friends. "The answer to all of your questions is money."- Don Ohlmeyer

    • @kosmosXcannon
      @kosmosXcannon 7 месяцев назад

      @@JM1993951it's more like they just need a fraction of the player base to buy it for it to be profitable. It probably cost them pennies to develop skins in comparison to developing the game since it is just one aspect of said game. Then they can charge like a tenth of the price of a game at best. All they need to make sure is that they can bring in more money than it cost to make and it becomes a money printer since the assets are digital.

    There's a reason no one got credit for working on the old games, Nintendo famously refused to use real developer names fairly often even up until the 90s. The reason why the companies did that, was to prevent talent sniping. Making games back then required a niche skill for programming that very few had at the time, so there weren't very many people capable of making actual games, let alone good ones that worked. So they had to keep the identity of their workers private, to prevent other companies from finding out who they were, and offering better wages and positions to snipe talent away.

      @@RyanBrown2K5 Yes, that's who they were talking about in the video. Most companies did it. Atari, Nintendo, Sega, DataEast, Capcom, Namco, etc.

It kinda shocked me because I hadnt seen a standard Blu Ray player in years because either everyone I knew used their game console, computer, or just watched stuff digitally. So seeing a standalone player was odd. The absolute most crazy part was the price though...it was $200. All I could think of is, who the f is paying $200 for a Blu Ray player especially nowadays when there are a bunch of better way to watch it, and most people are going digital anyway if they dont have a console. And no, it wasnt some premium player either.

    The blue ray feature was the reason I actually bought the ps3. Unfortunately there weren't many ps3 games I wanted to play and my money saving strategy is there have to be enough games to either equal the price of the console or at least half of it. The blue ray was what decided me buying it. There weren't enough games but there were more then enough movies, lol.

    13:55 (the reason the left Atari): There was a memo from the marketing department at Atari showing the sales of every game. The idea was to show which types of games were doing the best (let’s make more of these). 4 of the game designers noticed that they (out of 30 total designers), made up 60% of the sales. That 60% in sales translated to $60 million for the company. Those 4 designers were each making $30,000 a year. They went to Ray Kassar (new CEO of Atari) and asked for more money. Kassar told them that they (the game designers) were no more important the the person on the assembly line who puts the cartridge together. They left to form Activision and made it a point to put the Game Designer's name on the cartridge and in the credits in the manuals.

    Technically, Nintendo was the first company to do DLC, back in the 90s. It was only available in Japan, and required an add-on to the SNES. There were even a few digital games exclusively available via it.
    Sega also got in on it with the Dreamcast. Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 & 2 had a LOT of DLC missions, and many of those missions included exclusive drops. PSO wasn't the only Dreamcast game with DLC, but it is the one I most distinctly remember.
    Horse Armor was just the first time DLC made it into the news, and it is also one of the first, if not THE first, cosmetic DLC.

It's still a pretty great game (I still fire it up every once in a while when I want to get my stealth on), so imagine if Kojima had been allowed to finish it? Except Namco knew that entire patent was invalid. Old computer games often had mini games when loading and namco were inspired by them. Meaning they hadn't invented anything patentable because it was based on prior art or innovation
      So while the wording is wholesome, them filing an invalid patent and using the cost of a legal fight against them as a way of stopping everyone else from having mini games during loading, is decidedly less wholesome.
