Best way to get good at grafting is to practice. All serious growers should be grafting for the sake of practice on a regular basis. Different trees, different times, different ways. I graft throughout the season. Cutting back the rootstock as soon as the graft shows take in about three weeks really helps. Apically dominant trees especially do better by trimming back the host plant. Obviously if just adding a beach you don’t cut the branch off but if converting a tree get that distal host plant past the graft off as soon as possible. Good graft video. Thank you. I graft something every week. I have one pine with 10 different branches on it. It’s only purpose is for me to practice grafting. Deciduous trees are hard. Best done in spring but can be done in summer as well. Big fan of rolling buddy tape seems better than plastic bag technique in my book.
A health graft is a happy graft. Keep up the good work.

Than you should make a video on how to do it. Most people not try bc it takes along time and can not dry out even one time or they are dead. I have P Sylvestris cutting I started a year ago. Still alive but no roots.

If you are ever in No Calif check out Lone pine nursery. They graft Japanese cork bark black pine. Takes time but these guys are second generation propagators and know how to make things grow. I think grafting is easier than getting roots to grow on some cuttings. I keep practicing. Maybe someday I’ll figure out how to get my cutting to root.

a lot of times white pine is grafted on to black pine for aesthetics. the black pine has very nice bark while white pine has a more soft appealing pine needle.

pines and junipers, especially older trees, often will not backbud onto old wood, and that makes it impossible to keep the foliage compact. Sometimes you can chase the foliage back by pruning, but it takes years to do, and even then there's no guarantee. Grafting let's you put a branch exactly where you want it, saving you those years of crossed fingers hoping that it happens. A very valuable skill, that once mastered, is very lucrative and rewarding.

Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape ; It is patented by Parafilm. It is the best, there are many duplicates around but the duplicates have high failure rate. Hence go with the original : amzn.to/34KWnq7
