    Iowa made a social call into Portsmouth, UK in the late 1980's. I was working night shifts at the time and even mid-week she was open to the public. I thoroughly enjoyed a 20 minute walk around the main deck. Fabulous ship. Well done USA for keeping her intact.

      22steve5150 Yeah, I was very lucky. The funny thing is when I got my orders to report to the SOCAR I was pissed off, because I wanted another BB,, but it did not take long to get used to her. The South Carolina had the best damn crew in the Atlantic fleet. She was a true cruiser, always on patrol by herself, looking for a fight.:). She was the tip of the spear. I would bet if you asked anyone who served on her and also served on other ships they would tell you the SOCAR was there favorite. The Navy is not what it used to be, that is for sure. Just glad I served when I did.

    • @hhs_leviathan

      While I do think that a traditional battleship can be useful in modern warfare. The Iowa is A: museum ship now and B: the machinery is so tired and worn most it has to be replaced.
      The only alternative is building a new one but it will be more expensive than a new carrier and less versatile.
      But I was thinking about it lately so here is my thoughts on what features a new battleship is expected to have.
      -Be capable of ballistic gun elevation. (20 miles of range will not cut in anymore)
      -Carry a sizable fleet of helicopters. (Scouting and submarine patrols, a swarm of drones is also desired to be at disposal)
      -Have armour that can take on most missiles (Most experts say Iowa is immune to Tomahawks so add an extra three inches and rework how the armour is braced, probably add some reactive armour if you are especially paranoid)
      -Be able to take on more than one squadron of planes (sea to air missiles, Phalanx systems and whatever comes out in the future are your best friends)
      -Do something about the problem of getting torpedoed in the midships keel (ships can snap in half if that happens according to some armchair admirals. I was thinking of either a keelles hull,more akin to a weave of steel or/and heavily enforcing and extending the torpedo bulges.)
      Now assume _insert_ navy builds a ship that fulfills all of the above this can still go wrong because either Russia will manage get a missile so big they are essentially launching a space station at you or till the Japanese will hear of it and immediately get an erection so large it's tip is in Pyongyang, anime eyes and cherry blossom in the background:
      UCHUU SEINKAN *YA-MAAAA-TOOOOOOOOO!* 2 Electric Boogaloo... You are now outgunned...

    • @hhs_leviathan
      @hhs_leviathan 5 лет назад +7

      Oh and I forgot, you will also have to do something about your radars all dying after one well aimed missile hit... So you will need to have servile spare units ready to use on a dime in the heat of combat as battleships, as the name suggests are supposed to survive and thrive in the heat of combat.

    During a tour of Iowa our Navy veteran docent told us this fantastic story: a few years previous, an old man from South Korea toured the ship. As a boy during the Korean War, his family lived along the coast and they were in terrible fear as the North's communist troops drew near. Just as the enemy came into view a series of large explosions decimated them, and the villagers saw a dark shape on the horizon with its guns flashing brightly. The ship destroyed the invading force and thus spared the village. Years later the boy learned the ship's name, U.S.S. Iowa, and it became his dream to someday see it up close. How wonderful that his dream came true!

The Older Battleships and Older Cruisers did the majority of the Island bombardment in the Pacific. My dad who passed in 2017 at age 92 was on the USS Louisville CA 28 from 1943-46 and here are a few places the Older Battleships and Older Cruisers bombarded in 1944-45:
      USS LOUISVILLE CA- 28 Heavy Cruiser
      1944-45:
      1 - Extensive shelling Island of Wotje in Marshalls.
      2 - Bombardment Roi & Namur Islands.
      3 - Led gunfire support Eniwetok Island.
      4 - Bombarded Palaus Island.
      5 - Bombarded Truk & Sawatan.
      6 - 11 days of continued fire support Siapan.
      7 - Bombarded Tinian & Guam.
      8 - Enter Leyte Gulf - support major allied invasion force & shelled shore
      installations for 7 straight days.
      9 - Battle of Surigao Strait - Flagship for Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf.
      10 - Support landings at Lingayen Gulf. Hit by (2) kamikaze & killed
      Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler & many sailors.
      11 - Fire support for Okinawa. Hit by another Kamikaze.
      12 - Delivered Bull Halsey’s officers & staff - (150) to USS Missouri.
      13 - Continued fire support duties.
      14 - War ends.
      15 - Escorted surrendered Japanese ships from Tsingato, China to Jinsen, Korea.

    I'm glad that all the Iowa's class has been preserved, the United States has the most astounding collection of historical battleships from the USS Texas to the Iowas. However I think they should've guarded in active service at least two of these battleships, Wisconsin and New Jersey. Missouri for his historical significance as the place where the Empire of Japan has firmed his capitulation deserves to rest at Pearl Harbor and Iowa for her turret's damages should be keeped as a museum ship. If the United States should need a battleship it will be very difficult to train a crew, make the ship seaworthy and fully operational.
    A battleship remains the ideal floating gun platform, she can make shore bombardments with more efficiency than any other ship and with more devastating power than aircrafts. She could be the perfect escort for the aircraft carriers because she can endure more hits than the tin can fleet of nowadays. Alas some idiots have decided differently....

    • @DrRekiin
      @DrRekiin 8 лет назад

      +Drax65 Battleships are obsolete because modern missiles can punch through their armour and be launched from over the horizon. They're also slow and hence terrible for escorting modern carriers, which move at a blistering pace.

    • @apieceofdirt4681
      @apieceofdirt4681 8 лет назад +8

      +Emperor Ironclad Yes battleships are old. But "modern missiles can NOT penetrate her armor. That was 1 of the reasons they were reactivated in the 1980's. I also don't know how you got the opinion of the Iowa Class Battleships "are slow & hence terrible for escorting modern carriers!" First, they are the fastest battleship EVER in history with a Guinness book of world record's title top speed of 35.2 knots that the USS NEW JERSEY achieved. That's 40.50 mph round it off to 41 mph!!! They were designed to protect the fast carriers in WW 2 which averaged around 30 knots normal operation speed which ALL THE IOWAS COULD MORE THAN EXCEED. WISCONSIN OR MISSOURI could meet or exceed the carriers that they operated with during Desert Storm. Secondly even if a TLAM hit her or 1 of her sisters, the armor wouldn't be penetrated. Damaged? Yep but they could still fight. Look it up, you could put racing stripes on ALL of the Iowa's. Your information is blisteringly WRONG!!!

    • @apieceofdirt4681
      @apieceofdirt4681 8 лет назад +2

      It wouldn't be as difficult as you think. It would cost waaaaaay more to refurbish & upgrade them. In the hundreds of millions if not a billion FOR 1 ship!!!! The main problem is the know how. As each day passes, the knowledge of how to run a battleship decreases. The WW 2 vets & Vietnam Vets that taught us aboard the USS WISCONSIN gave us priceless information that was handed down from crew to crew so if they were activated again, the Navy would have to rely on those of us who fought the ship in the Persian Gulf War. Everything else, ammo, extra gun barrels etc. are stored in large quantity STILL by the Navy. Depending on which ship(s) were reactivated we could use the remaining sisters as a parts bin like they did to North Carolina, Alabama & Massachusetts when all 4 IOWAS were reactivated during the 1980's. I treasured the time I served aboard WISCONSIN & loved seeing Iraqi soldiers surrendering to our RPV so we wouldn't send a 16 inch 2,700lbs naval shell up their ass.

    My grandfather served on USS Iowa during Korea. He said the main guns were so incredibly loud, his ears would bleed sometimes when they were fired. RIP Grandpa.
    Going to ramble about some history....As HUGE as these guns are, Hitler had the main guns removed from his ships and installed them along his 2,000 mile Atlantic wall. If I remember correctly, Hitler used these guns to bomb Britain. Their firing distance was many miles. When USA, Canada, and British forces landed together on D-Day, we actually attacked the weakest point along this wall (by chance, and luck), and the three, THREE German soldiers guarding there were supposed to be supplied with at least 8 hours of ammunition but held three separate countries off for approximately 3 hours until they ran out of ammo. When they called one of their generals to report the attack, he disregarded it. Hitler slept through most, if not all of the attack. The general that the soliders called, ended up committing suicide within 24 hours of us landing. No one suspected we would attack this location since it didn't have a dock to unload our tanks and equipment. We had a mobile dock as one of our ships.
    My grandfather had so many stories from his time on Iowa. He told me about how they had a small scout plane (I can't remember the name of the plane) that they used for spotting for targets. One time when the Sailor was on his way back, a Russian plane followed him and shot his aircraft down, not far from the ship. Sadly the Sailor did not survive and he was buried at sea.

    Shaw, We only have one shipyard in the entire United States of America that can build aircraft carriers, Newport News in Virginia. That's what I mean when I speak of the destruction of our industrial base. Back in the 1940's and 50's we had several Navy yards capable of building any classes of ships from Destroyers to Aircraft Carriers. The Iowa class Battleship were all built in Navy yards, New York city and Philadelphia.

      +Kenneth Hill it is sickening what international trade has done to our production base. But also remember that during the war, many civilian facilities were refitted to produce military hardware. DDs and CAs were being built by barge and tugboat shipyards etc. Can we do that again in modern times if necessary? maybe. But only if OSHA and EPA are told the sit the fuck down or sit in prison for aiding the enemy by interfering with the war effort. LOL
      Of course the more important issue of skilled labor comes to mind too, with a large portion of fabrication work shipped overseas, finding enough skilled people to build war machines would be more of an issue than finding facilities capable of accommodating them.

      Bismarck has way to many important things placed above the armored hull, which paved the way for her getting her ass kicked by HMS Rodney And King George V. Yamato on the other hand, had the best guns, nine 18.1 inch guns that could shoot up to 26 miles. She also had the best armor, a 16.1 inch belt armor designed to wait and the impact of 18.1 inch shells from 1-3 miles minimum. She also had great aim, sitting the USS White Plains And Johnston, and sinking the Gambier Bay from 20 miles. Finally, she had great maneuverability, as she took very little damage during the opening stages of Operation Ten-go due to some extremely impressive evasive maneuvers. That’s why I think she’s the best of the best, and not Iowa or Bismarck

    Yes, it's a real shame that the inventor of the Dreadnought sold all his Battleships for scrap.
    But what the US doesn't grasp in relation of their inactive BB force is the PR value of projecting power and at the same time making admiring friends by having at least one of the Iowa class BB in an active state.
    Frequent foreign port visits with good news coverage with for example the USS Missouri will be more beneficial to foreign relations for the US, then three Ohio Class submarines together.
    But great that they're on display and I will certainly visit one (probably the BB-62 New Jersey in Camden when I'm in New York) in my life.

      Couldn't tell you. The tax payers of Iowa donated a bunch of money to get the museum going. As a thank you to Iowa the museum allows anyone with an Iowa ID in free.
