    It's Poetic that Straczynski himself is playing the maintenance tech pulling the lever. Closing out his wonderful show and a chapter of his life. Quite fitting too, that he is the last person to leave Babylon 5

    The place could have been a museum. It was clearly needed considering what will happen to earth afterwords.

    Now instead of a single huge "hazard to navigation" in a predictable orbit, there are millions of small ones moving at high speeds across a large area...

    • @gargoyleb
      @gargoyleb 6 лет назад

      That's what I was thinking. Why scatter it all over the place with an explosion when it could have been dismantled and possibly recycled. Guess that wasn't dramatic enough a send off.

      Alas, someone who noticed the same thing. It's a hazard to navigation? So blow it up, and make it a hazard to navigation! They would have been better off using it for something practical. If they can move B4 back 1000 years...

    • @michaelkelleypoetry
      @michaelkelleypoetry 5 лет назад

      Anakin-Marc Zaeger No, there are NOT millions of small ones. There was NOTHING left of the station at all. The charges were nuclear, and by the end of the explosions, every part of the station had been vaporized.

      @@michaelkelleypoetry You are incorrect. The Lost Tales intro (ruclips.net/video/welzKn-hnbU/видео.html) depicts debris being flung away from the station. Regardless of whether the charges were nuclear, the radius of the heat burn up would need to be large enough to engulf the station, which is clearly isn't in both this and the Lost Tales depiction.
      Now, hopefully the debris would be captured by the system and eventually spiral down to the Epsilon Eridani star or the Epsilon planets. It may also be that this results in an asteroid-like cloud around the system. Running into his probably wouldn't deal catastrophic damage to ships, unlike running into B5 would.
      I wonder if the hazard to navigation was actually that someone could take it over and use it as a base for raiders? I mean, we don't really think of raiders in the ISA era, but it's not inconceivable. If you're not going to use the station or pay for its upkeep (as Earthforce and the ISA were clearly unwilling to do), destruction is a better alternative than giving it freely to any opponents you might have.
      Ultimately, it should have been maintained as a museum, yes. I'm sure the guy in Deconstruction wishes it had been. But short-sighted views of immediate problems obscure long-term planning - it is true in our time and this scene is simply meant to demonstrate that. If you think B5 should have been preserved, do what you can in real life to encourage long-term thinking and preservation in modern society.

      @@michaelkelleypoetry You must have watched a completely different explosion from the rest of us. Even the depiction in the above video shows solid parts flying out of the explosion. The radiator panels were blasted free, major structural members are shown flying out of the station as its hull rips, and even the end of the scene itself shows the massive doors of the main docking bay flying out into space. If there was "nothing" left of the station, with everything being "vaporized", the scene depicting the final destruction of Babylon 5 sure did a lousy job showing it...

    " _I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we’ve exchanged. Long after we are gone, our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit that the part of me that is going will very much miss the part of you that is staying._ ”

    And who shut down the station. JMS himself.

  • @dirdib69
    @dirdib69 3 года назад +10

    I guess that the IA never bought B5 from the EA, given that it was an EF shutdown crew presiding over the decommissioning. The presence of so many different races' ships at the end tells the story: B5 accomplished its purpose - the creation of the IA. There was discussion about how it was constructed on a minimal budget compared to the other stations. B4 had been the largest, and even it was made with some salvage from the previous stations (some B3 insignia visible I think). The argument was made that it was expensive to maintain and was in danger of falling apart in any case.
    Of course, we know the real reason for it was a dramatic statement and confirmation if the prophecy shown to Sinclair in the first season. The scene was meant to "break our hearts" and it did. Ivanova's narration at the end summed up the series. The driving role of humanity was to teach the lesson of forming communities of diverse voices, of extending compassion to all living beings, not just those of our homes. Lastly, to do our best to build a positive future, and then to give way to the next generation.
    The scene still moves me, and I still wish that B5 had endured, for whatever purpose. As JMS and others have said, there would never be a Babylon 6.

    Always bothered me a bit when they claim the station will be a hazard to navigation and then turn it into 250 million tones of drifting space debris. It would make much more sense to attach some thrusters and launch it into the local star.

      The only possibility hazard of space station in that size....
      If it moving too close to planet orbit and caught by gravitational pull from the planet
      Especially when the station was based on O'Neill Cylinder space colony
      Like this example from Japanese animation show

    Blowing it up meant millions of uncharted navigation hazards zipping around a star system.

      Actually, it was just J Michael Straczynski turning off the lights, looking around one last time at the show he was told couldn't be done. The station crew set the station to overload the power core once the ships were a safe distance away.

    • @joesnow7216
      @joesnow7216 9 лет назад +5

      +jmupton2000 It wasn't flipping the switch that destroyed it. Flipping the switch powered it down for the last time, there were detonation charges triggered remotely that destroyed it. Do you really think they would design the station where anyone could stumble across the destruct switch and pull it?

    Always felt destroying it was a waist for the newfound 'co-existance' that had formed between all of the races.
    The whole "its a hazard to navigation" was just a poorly written script to give the writers/directers a reason to destroy it and have a definitive 'ending'.
    Had this been a real-world (or would the term be Real-galaxy?) scenario, it would have remained operational as it was, a place for the different races to send diplomats/traders/even tourists who wish to see other cultures but were unsure a bout going to other planets. If it needed more crew i'd have gotten it, likely a mixed-crew due to the nature of the place so no one side could claim to 'run' it.
    Why 'throw away' a centralized, neutral meeting hub? If any arguments came out in the IA afterwards, you'd have to find a random arse neutral area/planet to have the discussions at, and it'd end up being a different place every time.

      Destroying the station never made sense on any level Blowing it up would be the last thing you want to do if it is presenting a navigation hazard. The pieces themselves would be a far bigger hazard that then whole station. What would have been done is the station would have been deorbited in once piece ether to the planet or into the star itself.
      The station itself was only 20 years old. I doubt with the level of technology in that universe that it was made it would have been falling apart. More likely it would have been repurposed as a commerce station. Even if that wasn't an option the station could have been sold to another star faring race. I'm sure there where any number of less advanced races that would have jump at the chance to get a hold of a nice station like B5.

      It was a hazard to navigation because as a large base no longer well-maintained, and only staffed by a skeleton crew, it could have easily been taken over by pirates and used as a pretty nasty raider base.

    Revelation 18
    King James Version
    18 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
    2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
    3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
    4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
    5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
    6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
    7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
    8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
    9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
    10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
    11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
    12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
    13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
    14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
    15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
    16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
    17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
    18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
    19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
    20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
    21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
    22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
    23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
    24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
