I don't care if anyone else wants to judge me but I did fix a door problem watching this guy's stuff pretty coool man step by step and pretty soon I'm an actual handyman😅
Great to hear we were able to help. Thanks for watching
Thank you from a newly divorced women needing to replace a handle on my storm door!!! Your video was the most helpful and easy to understand out if the bunch! 😊
Thank you for mentioning the cutting of that rod. I could not figure out why the latch wouldn't be operational. Hacksaw was too challenging, used shears slowly and shallow until it was soft enough to break off and worked perfectly. Thanks again and Lord, please forgive me for all those 4 letter words before seeing this video haha.
Hey Scott, thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, easy to follow, tutorial on how to replace a Wright's screen door latch. You made my project frustration free!
Man this helped a lot. I kept installing the latch but it didn't work right. As I tightened it down it would not operate. I wasnt making sure the spindle stayed straight. Now I know from this video to keep the spindle straight as I tightened the latch. It works..thanks
For anyone wondering how to cut the rod / spindle (because it doesn't just snap right off): a hacksaw with 32tpi blade works wonders. You'll also need something to hold it still and raise a bit off the ground. If you have a work bench or something similar, 2-3 C-Clamps and a piece of wood works great.
Oh no! The people from Wright company said you just simply put two sets of pliers side by side because it's easy peasy...
hoe do you know what size to cut the rod if there is no old one!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there any other ways to cut it off if you don’t even have a 32tpi blade?
Just replaced our screen door latch after watching your video. So helpful, thank you!
I will be changing mine on Thursday morning. Thanks for the video as I am not a very mechanical person. Lol
Thank you so much for your video. I appreciated your suggestion to use the existing Rod. It made the job so much easier.
This was a big help for me. I had to get a new handle and I couldn’t understand the instructions . Then I came across you. Big time help. Thank you again for sharing this
Awesome to hear. Thanks so much for the encouragement. Glad we were able to make life just a little bit easier. Thanks for watching.
Your teaching was awesome tried doing it with directions at first glad I found your video . This grandma Thanks you and appreciates it tremendously
I fixed my door! thank you for the easy instructions.
So glad to help. Thanks for watching!
Your tutorial is still very helpful! I was able to install my new handle after watching your video!! Thanks again
Thank you i had the spring backwards and didn't know where to cut the metal bar and the screws was longer then the shortest screws but shorter then the longest screws so just used the old ones was easy thanks man
I have the same brand replacement parts, different color. Thanks for the how-to! I feel more confident!!
I'm so cheap man I'd take that apart and try to fix the spring, time is free at this point:) Thank you for another vid!
Agreed. Thats probably what I would have done as well but our old handle was pretty scratched up and for $15, I figured it was worth the investment to have things look nicer. Thanks for watching!
I tried to fix my old one. I have a reputation to be able to fix anything and this is a total POS.. I always say if a man can make it then a man (or woman) should be able to fix it. This is such low quality, poor design and yet a masterpiece of engineered obsolescent.
Easy to follow video! Got my new door handle installed! Thank you!
Clear and concise. Much appreciated.
Oh boy, I did something wrong, on mine lol! Got it on, but the latch won't open, all the way lol! Idk, what I did wrong, but doing this w/ one hand lol!! I will, rewatch, ur video again & hoping, I can fix it. Thank you, so much for this, video.
Thanks. Easy to replace because you explained it very well.
I watched a couple other videos, no help, this video huge help, thanks so much
Thanks so much for the feedback. So glad we could help.
Thanks Scott I needed this. I have the exact handle i already purchased it but my front handle broke off in minus 32 degree winter!
Thanks so much for the helpful video!
"In Rod We Trust"!
Thank you -very helpful
I was very stressed, thank you so much for the video.
You are very welcome. Hope we were able to help with some stress relief. Thanks for watching!
Glad we were able to help. Hope the video brought a bit of stress relief. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thank you for taking the time to explain this for us. It is NOT your fault and I am not criticizing you but these style latches are some of the lowest quality ever invented and mass produced. The wimpy spring soon stops working after installation and it is not practical to try and repair a broken one. You have to replace it with another poor quality latch that will soon fail just like the last one. If you buy one, go ahead and buy two because you are going to soon need it.
Very positive and clear instructions. And I totally agree, Robert! Even though my original latch did last for quite a number of years, once I could examine the inner mechanism it was obvious that it's another example of planned obsolescence. But then I enjoy repairing things and not tossing them just for lack of a small part. Cheers all!
Great help. Directions showed spring in wrong place. I used a bench grinder to shorten the rod. Be Blessed
You just saved my mom from buying a whole new door, thanks man!
So glad I was able to help and save if you guys a few bucks. Hope it was an easy project. Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks you every much you help us. 👍🏼💯
Helped a lot
Thanks for making this vid,bro
You are very welcome. Hope we made the job easy. Thanks for watching!
You could see the brand name of the handle on the inside of the existing one, so replacing it was presumably easy. If the handle didn't have a brand name on it, I wonder if there could be a problem finding a replacement with the same exact dimensions. Other than that observation, my compliments on an excellent and helpful video.
So glad we were able to help. Most of these door handles were made with very specific dimensions so that the handles can be easily swapped. Always best to take measurements for your specific door first before ordering, but they are pretty standard.
Can anyone share how to cut the ROD thing down? Hacksaw or easier? (Thx for you're KIND responses. I'm a beginner, and the previous 20yo handle has a non usable rod). Also wondering if author could share that on his video by adding/ typing it in at the spot where he's lucky enough to get to use his old rod, but others not so lucky? Thx 😊 😆
Hold the rod with one pair of pliers and break it off with another. It has a snap-line already on the rod. You will see the groove on the rod if you look closely. It snaps right off. Also, you might want to just use the old rod from the old latch because you know it fits. The rods usually don't wear out or break. The cheap spring is what wears out most of the time.
For anyone wondering how to cut it (because it doesn't just snap right off): a hacksaw with 32tpi blade works wonders. You'll also need something to hold it still and raise a bit off the ground. If you have a work bench or something similar, 2-3 C-Clamps and a piece of wood works great.
Thank your video helped.
What do you use to cut that one piece that needs to be level?
Thanks, I need this video. will be playing it when I work on the door!
So glad to hear we were able to help. It's pretty easy process, but sometimes it really helps to watch it being done. I've used RUclips for this more times than I can count. Thanks again for watching!
thank you so much!
Is the spring supposed to snap downside?
I don't have the old rod...how and what do i measure to get the right length?
Nice. Thanks!
What if the old lock is a different shape that can't be found. I have a round door handle on the outside that won't come out.
I just replaced mine with the one that has key, everything works good the only thing that I don't like is that the push button/lock cylinder moves to much when you try to put the key in. What I did wrong? Did I cut the rod to much?
How do I cut the rod
Thank you very much! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Can you do a video replacing the whole screen door
We will definitely make a video showing that process if we ever need to replace out door. Right now it's working great though :)
Helped
I don't have an old spindle. It would have been nice to see how to measure it. That's what I came for..... otherwise, good video.
Same
well I dont have existing rod so hpw do I measure my rod
What happens if the measurements are off? Is it common for the latch screw lengths to be 1-1/2 or 1-3/4 inch apart? Do I need to drill new holes?
You may need to take a measurement of your previous latch length and type that in when you purchase from Amazon or Home Depot. Most latches have a very standard setting. Ours swapped out without any need to drill new holes. If you're drilling new holes, something is probably off.
Your link does not take me to the replacement part. FYI. Thanks.
My Replacement handle has a key...I did everything instructed but there was no need to cut the spindle..it came out even and everything fit perfectly... but the door will not lock with or without the key.... and I took it off and turned the locke put it all together and still the key did not lock it...I called manufacturer...woman said spindle needs to be cut?...
Why the spindle did not stick out of the door?....😢🤦🏼♀️
When I open the door from the outside it causes the indoor latch to stick. What is causing that?
It is not you. It is just a cheap, low quality, poor design. They make a replacement for about $12.00 to $15.00 but it will soon break just like the last one. They make better quality hardware and it is installed in the higher priced storm doors but that requires replacing the outside door frame and door. It is very frustrating.
The link for the new screen door latch goes to Amazon and does a search for samsung chromebook and the link of the tools needed leads nowhere.
My foor wont open from the outside! What did I do wrong?
Damnit I have to do this tomorrow
Good luck with your project. It’s not too bad.
You didn’t show how to measure the rod if you don’t have the old one anymore
New Screen Door Latch LINK is not right :/
Good to know. Thanks for the heads up.
The holes are too close. I can't fit in the replacement.
I am going to try this mine just won’t lock 🔒 thank you 😊
How did the job go? Hope we were able to make it a little bit easier for you. Let us know if you were able to get things fixed. Thanks so much for watching!
@@ScottsGarage I can’t get the old part off the inside of the door yet . I will have to try harder the screws are stuck . I PROMISE to let you know when I get them out and put the new part on and it locks . Thank you for checking on me .💕💕💕💕💕
@@ScottsGarage okay I finally got it fixed ! Thank you so much Scott ! Whew those screws took me forever to manipulate .
Pro tip - don't buy one with a shitty plastic rod between the 2 handles. :(
Why might my door lock not be locking👀
Wish to God I would have watched your video before attempting to read the god-awful instructions that came with my new Wright co. storm door handle set. I have three to do and the first model I did included an exterior key lock mechanism which everything would simply fall apart in your hands when you try to hold the spring and rod in place and clamp the inside handle together to drive one of the six confusing sized screws through. Just an absolute mess for me. Until I got out Scotch tape to hold the crap together. Whoever wrote the instructions should be fired.
So sorry to hear that the default instructions were so horrible. I always have problems with those things as well. So much easier to watch somebody completing the job on RUclips. Thanks for watching.
You got robed I got the same one at homedepote for $3.94.
Wow, thats a killer price. Nice find!
Stop saying "actually".
Very helpful! Thank you!
You’re very welcome. Hope we were able to make the job a little bit easier. Thanks for watching.
