I am THE worst when it comes to home maintenance. So when my storm door closer broke last week, I thought I was going to have to replace the entire door. Thankfully, I came across your video. I went to the hardware store and found what I needed. I came home and fixed it myself. It took about half an hour. Thanks for the video!
Unlike the other videos on the subject at which I looked, you folks included information about the spring and adjustment screw. Well done! Thank you for the clear and concise tutorial.
You nailed that instructional video on door closers !!! Great job!!! I am one that needs all the information. This was the 6th video I had watched. Not that I couldn't of just went ahead and installed the closer without the video, I like to know the best possible way and measurements before I drill and install. Even though the closer will perform, I believe it looks better and functions the best when you're using precise measurements. You broke everything down perfect and went through the hardware and how it works . As well as what do in different seasonal weather conditions. You've sold me sure. I actually for more confident on installing and knowing where I can go and call for the best advice on my next project. Thanks again . Great job
This video helped me install a closer on my front door, adjust the closer on my kitchen door and now replace and repair the shoddy work done on the front door at my moms house by some bum handyman; thanks for this
OH THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH... SOMEONE KNOCKED ON MY DOOR AND OPENED THE STORM DOOR TO KNOCK... THEY DIDN'T SHUT IT TIGHT AND WE HAD 60 MPH WINDS... AND YOU GUESSED IT... THE WIND BLEW IT OPEN I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES... AND PULLED THE SCREWS 1/2 OUT OF THE DOOR JAM... SO I NEEDED HELP TO DO IT MYSELF... THANKS AGAIN SO VERY MUCH...
Thank you for a clear and precise way to install. The wind caught mine and snapped it into. Picked up one from big box store and tried to follow directions given on another video, but he did it bass ackwards from yours and I couldn't figure out how to extend the tension rod. After looking at your video , it took me seconds to complete.
Great instruction video. I guess there is a little more to installing a storm door closer than I thought. But I have a good understanding of how to do this since I have installed inside door closers and adjusted them. I installed one on my closet door so it will shut on its own since I forget to shut it. I'm terrified of bats and that is the reason I did this. Thank you so much.
Wow, this is so helpful! I thought I was going to have to ring up a handyman, but I'll be able to do this simple project on my own. I'm off to Home Depot! Thank you for making things much easier.
This was helpful somewhat. I'm not installing one new but rather putting the main tube back on already installed brackets. I had to remove main tube piece from both brackets so that I could slide the jammed "lock" back down the rod. When I unjammed the locking piece, the rod sprung back into the "tube". Now when I reattach one end of the main tube piece to a bracket, it's too short to reach the other bracket (the door is in the closed position when I'm trying to attach.) I can't figure out how to have the rod extend out so I can attach that end to the bracket on the door frame. Watching how you install a new door closer, I'm wondering why the rod on mine would be extended anyway. It seems it should only extend when the door is being opened.
Our products come with tapping screws #12 x 5/8" long, or longer. Sometimes the existing holes are too big for the screws and that could be the reason why they are coming out after a few days. I hope this helps.
Hi, is there a feature on the standard size closer to keep the door slightly propped open? Is it something I can achieve using the washer shown at 2:21? Thank you in advance. Mia.
Yes the washer on the standard door closer will help keep the door slightly propped open. www.idealinc.com/en/door-and-window-hardware/storm-and-screen-door-hardware/door-closers/sk9x-standard-storm-door-closer We also have the standard door closer with the touch and hold feature as well www.idealinc.com/en/door-and-window-hardware/storm-and-screen-door-hardware/door-closers/sk9600-standard-door-closer-with-touch-hold
My piston hinge kept pulling away from the frame no matter how long of a screw I put in, until I flipped the bracket so that the straight edge was CLOSER to the door (not away as stated in the video). Now it performs flawlessly. 🤷
I would suggest if possible to anyone installing door closer to reinforce door jamb mount with to a base metal plate with 4 self tapping screws plate to wood/aluminum door frame for added strength.
Wooden golf tees work much better for wood holes. Tap it in and then break it off flush with whatever you're putting it in. The wood filler doesn't have near the holding strength of the tees. If the tee is too big in diameter you can shave it with a razor knife if needed. If its something that will be under constant stress you can add a small amount of construction adhesive in the hole for added strength but honestly I've never had one pull out with it or without it.
Mine closer popped open and came unpinned up top at the frame. The washer device seems locked and I'm unable to extend it to attached it to the frame and pin it. Suggestions?
Thanks for the question. It ensures there's extra tension on the closer, to provide enough force to fully close and latch the door. Provides a little extra "kick."
My door is just like this one in the video. However my son took it off because he didn't want anyone to get hurt. Well unfortunately he threw it away. So I don't know which one I would need. Can you tell me the name of this one please? Thank you 😊
We don't have access to the name of that specific door however looks like it's a full view storm door, you can check out a few options online here www.homedepot.com/b/Doors-Windows-Exterior-Doors-Storm-Doors/Full-view/N-5yc1vZbtxkZ1z0sfqy Good Luck!
Thank you very easy to install. It works great when the front door is open. I know how to adjust the screw. When the front door is closed it will not close all the way no matter how I adjust the screw. What can I do?
I have this problem. There's an airpocket in the doorway and I can't get the storm door to latch shut when the door to the house is closed. One handyman "fixed" it--the door closed but wasn't opening wide enough to fit in the doorway with groceries. Another handyman adjusted it so it would open wider and now it won't close again. I tried adjusting the rubber around the door to allow air in but that didn't work either. How do I adjust this properly?
Hi Brian. The noise from the door closer should be minimal. It comes from the spring moving back and force on the inner surface of the tube. If the noise is too much, disconnect the door closer from the door side, spin the tube a few times while the rod is still connecting to the jamb bracket. It should smooth out some noise, but not eliminating. We don’t suggest adding grease through the gap in between the rod and the tube. Too much grease would block the spring over time when the grease gets dried out.
Hrmmm, we should be able to fix that for you through the bypass or seasonal adjustment. Can you send an email to info@idealinc.com so we can help you out?
It really depends on the door manufacturer, some of them have the door closers installed at the top and some of them have them installed at the bottom, there are both options available in the market.

What kind of screws to be used to fix on the aluminum frame. Mine usually come out after few days.

Works great
Excellent! Glad to hear!
What is the benefit/point of pre-tensioning it? This is the first video I've seen that mentions it.
Thanks for the question. It ensures there's extra tension on the closer, to provide enough force to fully close and latch the door.

Is that washer really necessary I have found delivery people don't know how to close it and tend to rip it out because the washer will hold it open.
will the door open 90 degrees when installed? I'm not getting it

You rock dude
No you rock!
Thought I needed a new closer, just needed adjustment
worked perfectly! Thanks for the specifications.

Thank you very easy to install. It works great when the front door is open. I know how to adjust the screw. When the front door is closed it will not close all the way no matter how I adjust the screw. What can I do?
Is part of the closing mechanism touching the front door that's why it can't close?

Anyone know what I can do to stop the squeal coming from the door closer? I tried a little white lithium grease and that didn’t help at all

Faster or Harder?
Both
I've never seen one soo low on the door frame as our are at the top of the door. Is that an American thing?
Hi Kaos.
It's purely a preference thing. Top, bottom, middle... It all works the same, and it's a question of where you want to see it.
Thank you!!
Oops... For wood frame better to use fat wood screws.
I just installed an Ideal closer. It "bangs shut" at the last two- three inches.
Hrmmm, we should be able to fix that for you through the bypass or seasonal adjustment.
Can you send an email to info@idealinc.com so we can help you out?
You need to add the pretension and then readjust your bracket to accommodate the new length. 2:11
When properly installed it does not " bang shut "; it closed " GENTLY ".
Is this the guy that narrorates the How It's Made TV show?
No but we're going to take that as a compliment
Wowowowo. No explanation,
Ideal Brand Closer not Wright Closer
YOU SAYIN IT'S NOT THE CORRECT CLOSER ?
Wright is just a quick grab for a cheap quick fix on a house your about to sell etc
The one I have so does not cut easily. I hate this! 😂
Strange them being at the bottom of the door. They are obvious and ugly. Where I live. They are on the top of the door and are hardly noticeable.
It really depends on the door manufacturer, some of them have the door closers installed at the top and some of them have them installed at the bottom, there are both options available in the market.
