    Fellow dial-up kid here! I remember being in the sixth grade. I think that was around 1994 or 1995. My parents bought our 1st family PC. It was a Hewlett Packard. I was blown away when my father connected a phone line to an external box next to the pc called a modem. Apparently, this gave us access to an amazing program called America Online. At the time, I thought that America Online was the entirety of the internet. I didn't understand that there were other websites. I thought America Online essentially was the internet.😂

    I think this is fabulous advice. I myself have minimal apps on my phone. But a change I could make is to simply turn my phone off or put it in another room where I can't hear it when I am working with music. That idea actually excites me. Reaching that flow state is such an amazing feeling. I want more of it. Thanks for the reminder!

      Great ideas! I’m honestly pretty bad at paying attention to my phone, and I usually leave it elsewhere when I’m trying to write. But I’ve found that even having the constant distraction throughout the day at the times where I’m not being creative, has a residual effect that impacts my creativity. And though I ignore my phone a lot of the time, just the little vibrations of notifications are enough to give me that small moment of distraction. It’s like having someone poking me all day saying “psssst, don’t forget, I’m here, and I have something for you.”
      Anyway, all of these boundaries you’ve mentioned sound like good ones 😁. I let me know how it goes!

      I’m right there with you. I’ve found that picking up my phone when there’s nothing going on is almost like an automatic reflex. And as much as I’ve tried in the past to set boundaries with my usage it always seems to have a way of slipping back into mindless scrolling. So when I saw this idea I jumped right on it. I still sometimes find myself pulling my phone out, but when indo my brain goes “oh right… there’s nothing on here.” And I immediately put it away. Dude, you're a great narrator, I can listen to your calm voice all day - but it's also to the point, not too much blah blah.
    Intuitively, I have done that with my phone already. Muted notifications and moved the social media apps to the very last page at the end. The only apps allowed on my first page are the apps which seldom show any notifications other than my text messages. It has made a big difference for me! The twitch to check the social media apps has gone away and now I can allow my brain to get bored a little and grab my guitar instead. Highly recommended 👍

    Totally agree with the phone thing. I often feel "trapped" because of the "freedom" in our hands. I wake up, open Facebook, scroll, realize I'm "doom scrolling" and then I click Menu > Close All. Then immediately click on the Facebook icon and scroll because of muscle memory. I do this several times before I realize "WTF am I doing" and then I close it and put my phone down and wonder what the hell I'm doing with my life.
    I remember how I never used to give a shit about my phone, it was my enemy. And funny enough, I got so much done. Thinking about it now, I realize I've come to "admire" my phone, and guess what, I don't get shit done.

A thing that I've been trying to remedy in terms of attention span and such is actually being able to take in music. At my attention spans worse, I would go to a certain song just to listen to a verse or a chorus. Hey Chris love the video topic but I feel a bit differently about phones and making music. The example I always use when an artist uses the digital landscape or the concept of social media and the phone is Bo Burnhams “Inside”. In my opinion it’s one of the best albums of his and one of the best so far in the decade and it’s a really creative and unique way of using the phone to make music and an art out of it, hell even in some of the shots in the special uses phone light as the primary source of lighting like in the song “Sexting” and “FaceTime with my mom”. I would love to hear your take on this and sorry for such the long comment 😅

    • @aminor3049
      @aminor3049 Год назад

      Hey I know you weren't talking to me, but I'd like to add on. I don't think this video was necessarily saying that no art can be made as a result of social media, but more that humans are often either uneducated on how brains work or lack self-control. Bo Burnham even touched on that in "Inside,", and I'm sure Bo came up with the ideas of how to use the phones and such when he was in a flow state. Although I do agree that phones are often over demonized, I think people need to learn how to moderate themselves.

    • @Usernametaken_4753

      @@aminor3049 I can see your pov but I see it as him saying it’s very difficult to be creatively inspired when you’re on your phone or your internet hence why he deleted or moved pretty much everything off of his phone and made the background look just like a black void, but I do see where you’re coming from and if Chris could comment on what he truly meant by this video I’d be more than delighted to concede my position in the face of that statement (btw it’s okay if this comment wasn’t meant for you Im still down the have this convo)

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад

      Thanks for such a thoughtful comment! I love Bo Burnham’s “Inside.” I’ve only ever seen the special, it’s a brilliant film really. I think the ways that he used phones in it are great. I don’t think that phones themselves are inherently bad. They can definitely be useful as tools. But they’re also definitely built to maximize your screen time, especially when they’re connected to social media and the internet. I would also say that my interpretation of the message of Inside is a bit different. Yeah, he used phones in really creative ways and that’s amazing, but I also think he makes quite a bit of commentary on social media, the internet, and how it impacts us in some pretty wild ways. For instance his song “Welcome to the internet” (one of my favorites) is a direct commentary on the subject.

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад +1

      p.s. just catching up on this thread. To clarify what I’m talking about in the video, phones can be incredible tools. But the way social media and the internet are incentivized, it creates a world of massive distraction. And phones happen to be the way that most people consume these things. And to be clear, what I say about the impact these things have on our ability to focus, it’s not an opinion. It’s fairly well studied science, I’m merely sharing what my experience has been with it. I agree with what @aminor3049 said, it’s up to us to learn to moderate ourselves at the level that works for us, which is what this video is an exploration of. and don’t get me wrong, I still have a bunch of tools on my phone for shooting, like the app to control my Sony A7iii, the apps to control my lights, etc. but they’re all apps that support and enhance what I do in real life, and don’t try to suck me into spending more and more time in my digital life, which is primarily what social media and the internet are built to do these days. I also agree that phones can be over demonized, but I do think that a lot of us underestimate the impacts of social media (a bit hypocritical as a RUclips creator, I know) specifically when it’s built on an advertising model and utilizes powerful tools that very methodically exploit our psychology. Again, not an opinion.
      Anyway, that’s a very long way of saying, it’s up to you to set your boundaries with these technologies. if you find that you’re just fine creatively and don’t have any issues focusing or getting into a flow state, that’s amazing, keep doing what you’re doing. That just hasn’t really been my experience and I wanted to do something about it 😁

    Luckily I have no addiction to smartphones whatsoever. I think it's because I was glad when we removed desktop phones at work that we weren't getting distractions anymore. I'm a very poor context switcher, so dropping me a mail so I can plan a reply is better for me than a spontaneous call. So I try to keep most notifications to a minimum.
    But phones have developed into a flood of notifications and attention grabbing. Millennials and younger have grown up with them as an essential tool. At the same time social media plays on short attention span and instant gratification. It's an addiction, a dependency and it's not going away anytime soon.
