    Monsanto was one of four groups to introduce genes into plants, and was among the first to conduct field trials of genetically modified crops. Monsanto was one of the first companies to apply the biotechnology industry business model to agriculture, using techniques developed by biotech drug companies.
    Monsanto's roles in agricultural changes, biotechnology products and lobbying of government agencies and roots as a chemical company have surrounded the company in controversies. The company once manufactured controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange and recombinant bovine growth hormone. Its seed patenting model was criticized as biopiracy and a threat to biodiversity.
    In September 2016 Monsanto agreed to accept Bayer's offer to purchase the company for $66 billion, pending regulatory approval.

They can technicaly use all sorts of stuff and still be labeled as organic, farmers can still use pesticides and fertilizers, and while neither of those will have an effect on people as long as the product is washed before consumption, it harms the environment and the people who have to work with those materials. @fahoudey 7 лет назад +5

      Junior Matsuda predatory pricing (setting your price extremely low to drive competitors out of business) is illegal.
      the real reason (actually two reasons) is one: luxottica pressure stores to just sell thier over priced brands only.
      and two other companies just play along and sell thier glass with high prices as they benefit too

    • @ChuiStrong
      @ChuiStrong 7 лет назад +27

      Honestly, I stopped buying brand name glasses and sunglasses because odds are the brands are owned by luxotica. i grabbed $15 prescription glasses with no brand name, just quality lens and frame. but the odds are that my glasses are built in the same factory that contracts luxotica frames. but at least I don't have to pay for royalties.

Personally I have always equated Mosanto and his subsidies as poisoned products leading to a slow and hurtful death. I am old enough to have witnessed on the news DDT AGENT ORANGE PCB and many other atrocities also in the food industry before the GMO and ROUNDUP AND WHAT NOT. I recommend that people look on the net for the Yearly reports these companies are forced by law to produce. They are extremely instructive as to companies under the umbrella of the main one, their objective for the year (s) to come etc. That is the fastest and easiest way to track down what they are exactly doing. Always follow the money trail.

    I’ve lived in St. Louis my entire life and we definitely have a dark history of chemical production. These companies would take advantage of people who needed jobs to support their families. They knew they were exposing their workers to caustic chemicals. The government even conducted top secret tests by spraying radioactive zinc cadmium sulfide all over bystanders in low income/minority neighborhoods. Not to mention illegal dumping of radioactive waste in cold water creek. The St. Louis metropolitan area is an ecological nightmare. I actually work in the former DOW chemical building where they’d process uranium metal rod for the Manhattan project. The EPA claims everything is safe but i find it very hard to believe. I’ve heard rumors that they still test pigeon feces in the building to monitor radiation levels. Needless to say, I’ll probably end up with some kind of bizarre cancer.....

      I *could* get into the many examples people of a mass-shooting mindset killing scores of people with other means (Ramming vans through public squares, arson, explosives, and the list goes on). But okay. I'll humor you. Let's say that tomorrow, a bill passed congress and was signed into law banning any and all firearms.
      What do you do about all the guns already in public hands? Let's say that you throw police at these newly made criminals and get a lot of police and otherwise law abiding civilians killed taking guns out of the hands of people who weren't ever going to hurt someone. What do you do about people simply manufacturing firearms? (It's far easier than you'd think. Australian biker gangs are getting caught manufacturing highly effective submachine guns in their garages). What do you do about people using other means to project a big, hurty chunk of lead at people other than the ignition of nitrocellulose? what do you do about all the people who were career criminals already and laughed in the face of this big gun roundup of yours?

    Great episode. Thought I read once that the Monsanto v. family owned type farm actually played out. The story goes, somewhere in Georgia Monsanto had a large test farm and adjacent to that was a modest family owned farm. Some of the crop on the family farm allegedly was cross pollinated with the Monsanto GMO. Monsanto sued for pretty substantial damages, tied the guy up in Court for years.

      Apparently not, "Where is the justice? Since 1997, Monsanto has filed 145 lawsuits, or on average about 9 lawsuits every year for 16 straight years, against farmers who have “improperly reused their patented seeds.” That's from "Natural Society" dated 11/9/2014. Also "The Guardian" dated 2/13/2013 "Monsanto sued small farmers to protect seed patents, report says
      This article is more than 9 years old
      Agricultural giant has won more than $23m from its targets, but one case is being heard at Supreme Court this month."
      I could probably find more but you take my point. Ain't the internet great? :P

      @@DukeGMOLOL Apparently you're wrong (look it up for yourself), Monsanto has sued numerous farmers for just that. They call it "unintended cross pollination (corn is pollinated by the wind ya' know) so it tends to get buried under the headlines. Why are you grinding on this? Stock holder?
