World's Best Lighters! Douglass Field L, Zippo, & Trench Lighter Comparison by 555 Gear

  • In this video I check out three popular $35-$65 lighters. I initially thought all three would be a matter of taste, after 3 months of testing there's a clear winner. They're all very distinct in design but could easily be alternatives that you would consider if you're looking for a traditional Zippo. One emerged as clearly the highest quality and really is a joy to use and share with friends. Perfect for cigar smokers or for outdoor camping applications.

Great video! The problem I see with the Douglass Field lighter is that it's made of brass, so it conducts heat better than steel. Even the stainless steel version has brass components. I'll stick with my IMCO lighter from the 1960s: it's steel, so it stays cool no matter how often I strike it, and it holds fuel at least twice as long as a Zippo.

So I’ve had my field L for about 2 years and I baby that dude and I’d say the longest it’ll hold fluid(for me) is for about a week. And I’m not always lighting it. But maybe it’s just the one I got. I mean it’s still my favorite lighter and I always keep a bottle of lighter fluid in my truck just in case it runs out so it’s not too big of a deal but I just wish it would last a little longer before refilling. But I digress.. Great review by the way 👍

I think the zippo is the best, due to it being collected by literally everyone who likes lighters. When it comes to mechanical objects like this I like the assurance that I will never run out of parts if I need them. Its kind of like buying a honda civic vs a classic rolls royce.

Nice video. I agree with your comments on the Zippo. My dad had one, I have one, but its always out of fuel. My two top choice are plasma, because it's rechargeable, but if I'm camping and it's a cold morning it sometimes doesn't work. For never fail the rope lighter is top dog in my experience.

Thanks for the video! I would like to add another lighter into my so called collection. I’ve got a Japanese Sarome lighter and you are absolutely right - the Japanese know how to build very precise lighters. Because I’m smoking maybe 2 or 3 Cigars a year, I don’t need a full size lighter for everyday use. I’m looking for a very small one. So I could wear it in my small fifth jeans pocket together with a tiny flashlight.
    Best regards,

So the $55 price tag from a third party was the deciding factor to leave the Zippo out of your first place? What about the $12 not engraved brass "Plain Jane" found at every Walmart checkout? It works EXACTLY like the $55 dollar overpriced Zippo you tested and gave second place to.....
Btw.... I am EXTREMELY biased as my entire family on my father's side has worked at Zippo in Bradford PA at one time or another. 😉

I had fun with this one. I ordered both lighters from the company you mentioned and stopped smoking while they were on it's way. So now I do carry of course the Douglass because that's the one I can be sure it actually works. When one smokes you usually know how much gas is left in your lighter. After that you don't check that often.

The price is £245, so it is expensive, bit man, please check it out. I like my Douglass, but for me it takes to little fuel. I smoke, so I use it often, and it goes empty pretty fast. Bit with little use, the fuel last forever.😊

How about storm lighters? I remember buying a fairly nice gold plated one back in the early 2000s when I still smoked. It was very beautiful, and extremely reliable until it stopped working a couple of years later. It was still feeding gas, but the two wires would no longer glow, and so the gas was not ignited. Is that sort of a lighter a no-no for you serious lighter collectors? I bought it in a cigar shop. I believe it was an italian brand.

1 you obviously don't smoke ciggars. You NEVER suck in the flame on a ciggar. Trashes the whole thing burn the end like a normal man and THEN INHALE

The best lighter is the one that will save your life. It will light in extreme cold, since that's the moment you need a fire. Butane don't work in cold, and battery lighters will run out of batteries in cold. In summertime, just use any cheap lighter, don't pay that much, it's not important. These videos just wants you to buy stuff.

I think the biggest issue here...is you spent 50 bucks on a zippo. They're 10 dollars, and for that price they're a lot better.

Dude, lighting good cigars with naphtha? No. I got a better way. Use 200 proof ethyl alcohol, AKA Ethanol, AKA Everclear whiskey. Utterly flavorless flame. Not as big a flame but hotter. Needs refilling more often, maybe every two or three days too keep the flame tall as possible. I put a few drops of peppermint oil mine. It makes my smokes slightly menthol. Been thinking about using cinnamon oil.

Japanese people make a lot high quality things, this lighter is one of example.China is very, very far from in quality from Japan, and not only China like global leader , many states , maybe all states in the world are behind Japan in quality, like in car industry, fishing gears, electronic,…Looks like Japanese people are born to show to the rest of world how to build top notch things.

any lighter made by IMCO is better then a zippo for how long it lasts on a fill up although they do need maintenance when they get old because the flint wheel can clog and the flint spring can lose some pressure making them light less reliably you should get one and do a review but look for one with alittle rust so you know it's real and not a chinese copy

Zippos are basic and pretty rubbish. They break, they fail. I have sent one back for repair and it lasted 6 mths .Sent it back again I suppose . Still like it though.

This lighter seems nice, but broke in about 1 week of pocket carry - furthermore, the company refused to help with parts or service, as I hadn't ordered it from their official distribution retailer in the US, who was completely sold out and has continued to be for over 6 months. Complete garbage, do not buy.

Sorry, the Field L - the thing disintegrated, with the flint wheel pin coming apart - attempting to even get a replacement part wasn't possible, and I'm stuck with a beautifully machined paperweight.

    douglass lighter field 👎🏼👎🏼
If you use this lighter even for 5sec the upper section really dose heat up pretty seriously it will burn your fingers or if you put it in your pocket without cooldown period it will burn you bad. It’s poorly design and overpriced.

You shouldn't light a cigar with a fluid lighter. Unless you want to ruin the taste of your cigars with the smell of lighter fluid. I wouldn't do it you may if you think it will not affect the taste of the cigar you smoke. YMMV as everytring in a real life. Thanks for very interesting review.
