Make Amazing Wood Rings on Your Router Table

- I mounted a DIY table top drill press to my Incra LS router fence and here are the results. If you are wondering what kind of wood I used it is bicote, Cocobolo, spalted tamarind and maple with a cherry core. here is a link to see how the drill press is made • DIY Bench Top Drill Press

have been following your ring making videos and your technique for a while and have always thought I could do the same with my wood lathe and it would be better than a router and drill press. But now that you've incorporated the incra positioner to the mix, it's a great approach for repeatability with consistent accuracy - even if you do have a wood lathe! great job. Looking forward to more!

This is a crazy neat set up!! I’ve always seen ring done with a lathe but I feel like the precision with this set up is way better and faster not to mention more versatile for use with other projects!

Using the "Pilot Drill Holder" from the HoleSaw Cutter was Genius. I was thinking a "Collet" type method initually

I just completed a ring using this process except I used the drill press with router mount tooling. The process worked great but I have to practice a bit more to get exact wood mandrel sizing, bentwood core sizing and final trim. The table tapping and the T-Bit requires some practice. Even with some flaws in my ring, I am really pleased by what I learned. I think yours is the best process to get a strong wooden ring. Thanks for sharing this!

Love seeing how you've dialed-in your process. Great interface between the drill and router. I have the same Incra setup on my table saw, but not at the router table. Must..not..spend..more...money..in..shop...this..year...uggh.

I've been using your methods for about two weeks now and have some great success!!!!!!!! Your precision process is very impressive but a bit daunting for the result. Kind of like a $3000 set up for a $30.00 product. If someone has the Incra Ls positioner, they will have found another use. I salute your talent and your attention to detail.
Great looking ring, but I'm a little confused, if you are making blocks of the composite layers, why not just make foot long blocks, that you can shave off a thin layer to wrap on the outside? Thanks for the video.

You have a good process, but it does seem to be quite time consuming. No doubt it is quicker in real life than on the video :-).
Why not (try and) make yourself one or more expanding mandrels. Expanding mandrels are used quite often in the metal / engineering industry. When you have finished the outside of the ring, just release the mandrel to remove the ring.
Your technique and ingenuity are amazing though I question using $5000 work of other tools when you could get a $350 lathe and simplify the process

Sorry. I cut that out because I thought it was getting a little too long and boring. Honestly the whole finishing process would probably require a whole new video. I would recommend watching some pen turning videos on how to finish using CA glue. That's how I learned.
i haven't had much luck finding visual help with the inside of rings shaping/sanding/applying finish ect but i love your way of making these and i have so many questions lol, ultimately i'm just using a nova chuck for what you made out of a wine cork. do you make your own dowels? and are your "sandwiches" 2x2 square or 1 1/2" square? and if you ever make a video on the finishing process it would be amazing to know which grits you go through ect, Thanks for your time
Awesome product and video. But the name is a bit missleading. Yeah you used a router table but the jig over top of it and especially the incrometer fence makes it wayyy more than just a "router table"
Very nice work and the precision you've accomplished is nothing short of amazing. Question for you - I've recently made my own wedding ring and used a wood turners water based finish, which seems to be pretty close to a polycrylic like product. Have you ever used anything similar? How does your super glue finish hold up over time? Does it yellow or crack? I plan on making a couple of backups... I'm not real sure how long my first ring will last. Any advice you might have will be helpful for the next couple I make!
Superglue holds up great. Lasts several months if you wear it daily even showering, swimming and hot tub. I'm a healthcare worker so I wash my hands dozens of times daily and almost never take off my ring. If it gets a little ratty just put a quick coat or two on and it's like new again. But I rarely have to do that. Going to experiment with the minwax wood hardener soon to see if it give the rings even a bit more life.

Hi Selandry1, First thanks for the great video, Like Bryan, I too made my own ring for my wedding in last may. I used a filed down titanium ring as the core and finished the outside with a piece of Cuban mahogany. I finished the outside with CA glue, but have noticed a few rough spots over the past 5 months. I'm planning to re-finish the outside but was wondering how often you refinish your rings? monthly? yearly? I'm just wondering if i want to try a finish other than CA
I have only used superglue and it seems to hold up to about 2 months of every day wear before I have to refinish it which only takes me about 15 minutes. Keep in mind that I never take my ring off and work in an ER so I us hand sanitizer about 40 times a day which Im sure greatly accelerates wear on the finish. And it does not yellow. Glad to hear you made your own ring. Did you use my method?
It wasn't quite your method, I watched numerous videos for different rings. I ended up using an existing Titanium ring which was my size, filing/sanding it down to a thickness of 1mm (sanding titanium is a slow process) I did sand while the ring was mounted on my drill press, so you could probably claim some of the inspiration for that. I then stabilized a piece of Cuban mahogany which I made my wife's ring box out of. Once stabilized I drilled out the inside and slowly sanded the inside until the Ti ring fit within it. Glued it up. Mounted it on the drill press again and sanded down the outside then finished with CA glue.
So not quite your method but your video did help. Thanks

I feel like this would be a lot simpler with a bench top metal lathe (you can use a metal lathe for wood but not vise-versa). Seems over complicated to use 2 opposing rotations and it seems like doing that would cause binding which could make any imperfections in the wood cause splitting and splintering.

Since I can't search comments, I'm probably asking a repeat question. How did you make the veneer that flexible, and still gluable?
What glue did you use I tried super glue from one of our food stores and it ha very little shine
out of curiosity, why don't you use a lathe with an x/y table?
That incremental fence adjustment is great but far too expensive for me. I need to look at the finest thread bar with the largest thread per inch count I can find and see if I can improvise.
What was the size of the router bits? I ran to Woodcraft today and saw there were several to choose from. Thanks, I really want to make rings and my goal is multiple rings per day.. Thanks for posting these videos. The best on rings I've seen. Ed~

The bits is a 1/4" downcut spiral bit. Glad you liked the video. I am going on 2 years and still tweaking my process. It takes a lot of trial and error to get a ring right. I still consider myself a novice. Good luck.

Did I miss something? Was the router bit on the bottom table moving, or just use the drill press to hold a trim router to spinning the ring blank, or both? Cool idea but I watched twice and still not sure what I seen.

Why not use a hole saw, one for the inside and then one size for the outside of it.
Maybe a Laser would be faster or a cnc router.
In theory , with the bentwood inner core, could you bypass 24hour set time, but instead using the five min epoxy used during the “ wood sandwich “ glue up ?
I’m in the process of adding bentwood cores to my current batch of rings I’m working on.
Perhaps, but the epoxy makes sure to fill all the voids and is super durable.
I'm gonna pawn my gold ring & make me one from wood slivers & CA glue..
My wife will never even know.. Buy a guitar with the proceeds..HaHa!!

Make anyvwith spalted wood yet or burl? I made a walnut n maple ring and. Mahogany and rock maple. So far..they arent as nice as yours . i polish my. Ca glue. Fonish with 0000 steel wool

How do u decide ring sizes ?
I have a ring sizer and use it to fit the rings and help with the diameter of the mandrel the rings are mounted to.

Finished product was great but most of what you did made no sense to someone that has never seen any of this before. Couple times you literally said theres other videos you can figure this part out or its up to you to figure out. Again really neat product but video details very subpar.
