I absolutely love it! So nice to see people respecting a house and to restore it to its former glory instead of ripping the soul out of it to make it look like an uninspired ‘modern’ concrete box.

    • @annetteskaggs9328

One hundred percent agree. I HATE when people buy a beautiful OLD house and proceed to make it look modern thereby destroying the beauty that once was. If you want a modern looking house buy one that already looks modern. I'm not talking about updating- wiring and plumbing etc. That is necessary of course. I'm saying as to the look of the old house restoration is what makes it look best and keeps the historical integrity. Hate these hgtv shows that just ruin the old houses they look hideous when they are done "renovating" them.

Hate it when people want the outside of a house to look old but the inside of it completely stripped & modern. Just doesn't make any sense.

I love how you restored the outside front. It went from sad and lonely to lovely and charming. You are making the spirit of you house joyful. Just one comment you might want to consider. Living in the US, I can't tell you how much a rear patio roof will add to the enjoyment of your garden. Imagine being able to relax outside on all those rainy days with a hot mug of tea enjoying the wonderful aroma of your flowers and listening to the birds. Many of us have small heaters to keep us warm on chillier days, along with cushioned chairs and throws. It just adds to the comfort and enjoyment.

Wonderfully done. As an old person in London who doesn't use insta it is great to see this on youtube. When we found our house (having children by then) having separate rooms was really important for working from home (even back in the old days) to keeping teenagers caged (well not caged but separate) so everyone has privacy. I have never understood anyone who likes everything open plan. The tiles on the path are like those my daughter's flat had in London and I remember the quotes for the works to repair them (she sold up this year and moved slightly more into outer London near me (as has husband and 2 children now) which is a different issue really - where people choose to live in London), never mind the finances of mortgages and costs which being the boring person that I am I find equally as interesting. The UK as we know has an open property register and the video gives the number on the street - which perhaps might want to be blocked.

While it may not be original, I would be tempted to add french windows to the dining room leading out into the garden. That way if you are holding a dinner party, guests can get from drinks in the garden to the dining room without going through the kitchen.

Completely agree. This is so true for the UK housing market. No one seems to invest in improving the curb appeal of their properties. It's even often difficult to do so due to local planning regulations. I'm not sure what the US is really like, but whenever I was at US house reno shows, the first thing they talked about was replacing siding and improving the front garden which makes total sense!

enjoyed watching this. Love how you restored the front of the house, windows and garden. Would love to see the inside after kitchen installed and the house 'finished'. What I particularly loved was your decision to demolish the naff conservatory and improve your private outdoor space. Whenever I have been looking at houses to buy I have wanted to tear down the silly additions which, while giving more floor space, inevitably distance the garden from the house, usually the kitchen. So, so much better to appreciate the garden from the house. I have chosen to move into a very tiny house and friends all assumed I would do an extension. That might give me a larger kitchen but the courtyard garden is already small. Instead, I am going to rip open the back wall and install larger windows the full width of the house to bring the garden into the kitchen/dining area. This will give me more light and will make it feel like I am eating in the garden without losing precious outdoor space. Many people will tell you that you have devalued your house by losing a third bedroom for your luxury bathroom but I applaud you designing the house to suit your needs and wants. I have taken down the wall between my two very tiny bedrooms, thus 'devaluing' my 2 bed to a one bed property but this gives me light from two aspects, so the space no longer feels pokey and now place my bed in an alcove and use the enlarged floorspace for my desk, my yoga mat and a comfy chair, thus turning the upstairs into a sunny study/sitting room which will be ideal on winter days because my tiny sitting room downstairs is very dark and best for cosy nights. I do think it is never about amount of space but quality of space and you are taking care to make yours lovely.

Gorgeous! We have just bought one and it’s now rented out but I want to get started on changing it, will have to wait. Love what you have done. I really want the black and white tiles and hydrangeas everywhere. Luckily we have some original features left, old radiators but don’t think they will last out!

It’s great to see people removing concrete in their yards. Having more permeable surfaces in the city is extremely important for rain water management. For lowering the likeliness of flash flooding for instance.
That said, I don’t understand how people can even afford a house let alone afford one that needs so much extra money put into it to get it up to par. What kind of jobs do these people have?

Big room and small paint brush/ roller brush won’t work. Invest in larger brush and work would be done in no time.

I'm guessing a boiler is the same as a water heater here over in the states. All we have to do here, is go to a DIY store and purchase a water heater and put it in, and it's done. Why would a boiler take so long to get over there?

I didn't think it was possible to successfully remove render from a property. Was it very costly, time consuming or damaging to get it off ? Sadly the render on our house covers some alterations including decorative brickwork above a door and window which would now look out of place because the door was moved and the window altered in size, which happened before we bought the property.

I don’t think render is the worst thing, we have rendered the lower back of our house for similar reasons (poor quality bricks…) it cost around £3K and not damaging at all! Totally worth it

@@ashmazzina I'm not saying there's not a place for it but if other solutions can be found I'd prefer it and think brickwork looks more attractive. As someone with render on their house, any subsequent work that has to be done can damage the render and is visible and it's harder to restore the appearance. Builders are not interested in doing small restorations.
