So proud of local Christchurch, New Zealand boy, Marlon, making good overseas. He trained with great New Zealand opera-singer, Dame Malvina Major, but decided to go down the country & folk road...He has the most amazing soulful voice for one so young. A true talent. May his star shine & rise high! :-) Go Marlon! Love & peace from home, down under in Aotearoa-New Zealand.
You never get too old for good stuff. Marlon is for me. His self-effacing gentility of manner is seductive. He sings to express rather than to impress. He is tender and melancholic and accepting of human imperfection. His voice calms and uplifts.
I've seen Marlon in Melbourne and in Toronto and I've got to say...one of the best performances I've ever seen. Whenever he does "When I was a young girl" there is a next level silence coming from the crowd. It's quite surreal. Not many people can do that.
Saw him last night in Seattle when he opened for Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop. Man oh man. I was transfixed from the first note - and I wasn't alone. He is magical live. It was a beautiful surprise, I'd never heard of him before. He sounds familiar and new all at once. As always, thanks KEXP!
We saw him at the Powerstation in Auckland, NZ in Feb....absolutely amazing, his voice was incredible. You could have heard a pin drop during " When I was a girl" . Can't wait for the next time he is in NZ!
This young man (Marlon) is a very, very talented musician. Thanks to Brokenwood Mysteries for introducing him, and others (like Delaney Davidson and Tami Neislon) to an American audience; outside of NZ and Australia.
I once told Marlon his range is High Lonesome and he was chuffed - and he told me that 'young people' think he's named after a fish . .good kiwi lad. We're very proud of him.
Saw him at the Austin City Limits festival 2016. Knew nothing about him beforehand. Concert made me feel suspended between a David Lynch movie and a Ghost of Marty Robbins show. Unreal voice. Side note: two members of Pete Yorn's band were beside me at the ACL show. They were just about to go onstage but had to check out Marlon!
Oh gosh. That`s something fresh and touchi I`ve just discovered Marlon , form Artur Rojek, he invited him to Off Festival 2018. Original, for me kind of "oriental" singing. Looking forward to see concert on July !
+Alvee K. Love the violin and decent vocal back-up, but I really can't think of anything good to say about that guitar solo. Otherwise very nice band and exquisite singing from Marlon.
I saw him at Womadelaide last weekend, and he was a standout for me - and he lives up the road! Captivating, what I discovery. Be sure to watch him on The Beautiful Lie - the modern Australian retelling of Anna Karenina.
The complexity and artistry of his music is brilliant. I always come back to this session. I always wonder if his shirt is an inspiration. If so, anyone know?
I met Marlon last year in Melbourne randomly in a Chemist Warehouse, talked a lot about how we are both young NZ musicians on a parallel path but he is miles and miles ahead of me! If you're a fan of Marlon, I think you might like my music too :) Thanks!
I'm happy with this guy representing New Zealand music to the rest of the world lol... but to be honest, talent like this is unheard of in New Zealand. We've 99% shit music like every other shit-hole of a country.
I really love Marlon and want to love Dark Child, but FUCK ME. What a snorer. ...the rest of that repertoire is so on point, but goddamn that song is such generic trendy bollocks.
+MrsWilliamTheBloody The song the dj called amazing you called a snorer, funny. It's not even played on mainstream stations, so how is it generic and trendy? Get a dictionary and a clue

Pro trick: watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching a lot of movies recently.

Vomit spew vomit is what this degenerate leftist maggot produces
Wow. Have loved Marlon since l saw him at the Commemoration in Hagley Park. Had no idea about the Dame Malvina connection.

He is an old soul and his voice and manner is so incredibly appealing...
Beautifully said.

He opened for Iron & wine last week in LA and I was honestly blown away! Love finding new artists like this
The best singer songwriter in this decade!!!
Marlon is absolutely wonderful. Outrageously good live when i saw him in Melbourne last year
This guy is so fresh and different. I was hooked after hearing "What's Chasing You". Very fucking cool!!
I totally didn't expect that! sounded great 😊
I know plenty of male singers and every one of them would love to have a voice like Marlon's.

Saw them last night in Chicago and it was the best thing I have ever seen in my life. They got really into it
This man leaves me breathless

Americas most promising country artist is a Kiwi, amazing.
I'd say Sturgill Simpson is the most promising country artist
Thanks for the tip. Both good artists. Both worth listening to. This is my first listen-in to Sturgill: ruclips.net/video/w5cMqD0WqYE/видео.html
We saw him at the Powerstation in Auckland, NZ in Feb....absolutely amazing, his voice was incredible. You could have heard a pin drop during " When I was a girl" . Can't wait for the next time he is in NZ!
Wow! What session musicians. Totally, absolutely taken.
This guy just sold a record.
you are all great, thinking of the people of NZ today, thank you
Why you write this? And What`s the meaning?
The Best of New Zealand!!!!!
Great job by the recording team on this one, sounds great.

Goosebumps, chills… The whole lot!
Great back up! Yarra Benders! Always love Marlon !
simples e autêntico,um dos melhores que já escutei....simple and authentic the best sound the listened this year....
Hes mesmerising 👏🏽👏🏽
Beautifully haunting vocals, reminiscent of Roy Orbison, Chris Isaak, Great songs
Exactly!
Oh gosh. That`s something fresh and touchi I`ve just discovered Marlon , form Artur Rojek, he invited him to Off Festival 2018. Original, for me kind of "oriental" singing. Looking forward to see concert on
July !
Marlon delivers.
Elvis meets Jeff Buckley and Marlon comes off the best!
No me lo puedo creer, Jeff buckley (Great) but...
Seen marlon at the Palais in Melbourne recently, just absolutely stunning unique voice , big fan
More like modern-day Roy Orbison...
Saw him at the Portland show mentioned here. Such a great show. This setup feels awkward. Love the miss lonesome fumble. Cant wait till the next time!
God damn... I'm obsessed
that multi-instrumentalist is a cool man.
+Alvee K. Love the violin and decent vocal back-up, but I really can't think of anything good to say about that guitar solo. Otherwise very nice band and exquisite singing from Marlon.
+benjámin beregszászi 'Neil Youngesque', which is good.
That voice! Exquisite and a bit haunting. More a country/rockabilly mix...unexpected.
I saw him at Womadelaide last weekend, and he was a standout for me - and he lives up the road! Captivating, what I discovery. Be sure to watch him on The Beautiful Lie - the modern Australian retelling of Anna Karenina.
Sensacional! Amazing band!
The complexity and artistry of his music is brilliant. I always come back to this session. I always wonder if his shirt is an inspiration. If so, anyone know?
very marissa nadler like, i love it! he's from just outside my hometown, opening for springstein next year!
fiddle/mandolin player is Dave Khan so good
awesome performance guys....good to see ya Dave ! :-)
Love the Neil Young sounding solo on Dark Child
For sure, First thing that came to my mind
I met Marlon last year in Melbourne randomly in a Chemist Warehouse, talked a lot about how we are both young NZ musicians on a parallel path but he is miles and miles ahead of me! If you're a fan of Marlon, I think you might like my music too :) Thanks!
Terrific!
Nunca creí q me gustaría música de este estilo. suenan genial!
+Arturo Calderon Yo tampoco, pero me encanta su música :)
Just awesome!!!!
wonderful
that last song....Wow!!!
is it me or Marlon kinda looks like Miles Teller?
haha...I thought the exact same thing!!
Ay I cant wait for dude to get big here in the states. I share him with everyone I pass lol I just wanna see a concert here is all :///
Amazing!
When I Was a Young Girl has a really haunting quality, sounds kind of like Blue Crystal Fire by Robbie Basho
He` s not a man who`s imagine in my brain, then i Just`it heard an a ordinary singer.
Tune it mate
Ótimo som.
Kexp sempre traz coisas bacanas.
Есть что то цыганское в его исполнении. Я его полюбила всей душой. Хочу попасть на его концерт
He fucked up miss lonesome on the second verse and had a bit or a laugh. Good stuff!
brilliant¡¡¡¡
That guitar player though
He either has very similar influences to Montreal's Timber Timbre or he's totally jacked his vocal style.
una belleza...
❤❤❤❤
does anyone know what sort of guitar that red electric one is? its a beautiful machine
It's Fano :)
i ain't gay or nothing but i really like marlon's smile
Like vampire or «normal»?
That guy is like European Elvis
+CogN1to Except he's not european...
+CogN1to he claims Maori heritage on his fathers side.
+mb1968nz He looks like he has Maori heritage, so I think it's more than a claim.
judith nickels i agree
+mb1968nz And his mother who is Ngai Tahu.
what does it say on his tshirt?
the Pussy Warsers
anyone know what the guitar is the dude in white plays the solo on in Dark Child?
It's Fano
Keith Richards would love this.
I don't think so
Voice is super similar to Timber Timbre
Similar yes but Marlon has a more ethereal quality to the camber of his tone
King in the river... oops! :D
Womad x

+De Anna Le Pree they're bringing what they can
FURCIAT3E ?X!

I went to WOMAD last weekend and all the kiwi acts were killer. Marlon, Swamp Thing, Sons of Zion.. They were all awesome
good taste in music you most certainly have! :-)
Poraka. There are some amazing artists in New Zealand
I love Marlon's music, but the electric guitar's tone, and particularly the ugly solo killed the song.
Sshhh!
I like dirty guitar, like Marc Ribot
I really love Marlon and want to love Dark Child, but FUCK ME. What a snorer.
...the rest of that repertoire is so on point, but goddamn that song is such generic trendy bollocks.
+MrsWilliamTheBloody The song the dj called amazing you called a snorer, funny. It's not even played on mainstream stations, so how is it generic and trendy? Get a dictionary and a clue
Dark child is such a beautiful song
